[Showcase] Show Us Your Rescue Designs! 0.24+

If you are using Windows: 'Start Menu'->'Search programs and files' enter charmap or you could just run charmap.exe which lives in system32\ With some scrolling down you should find √ in both Arial and Courier New - which are default fonts iirc - and in many other font files Of course, you still end up just copying and pasting but at least you can make your own √ on demand instead of having to find one online (and wait in all day for it to be delivered no doubt only to find they have sent the wrong parts. I remember once I ordered a box of '!'s only to receive a box of '|'s and '.'s with some assembly instructions ) -
I'm cross posting this from the Toolbar thread as it also involves MechJeb... Anyway, some files... http://www.i2net.me.uk/files/Games/KerbalSP/ErrorLogs/KSP-SPH-StockCraft+MJ-ClickedConfigureButtonsOnToolbar.zip http://www.i2net.me.uk/files/Games/KerbalSP/ErrorLogs/output_log-SPH-StockCraft+MJ-ClickedConfigureButtonsOnToolbar.zip Once again this may mean nothing but all news is good news

Still plugging away at my Win x64 career and thought this latest little hiccup may be of interest. First time in SPH. Added MechJeb to an all stock craft, up popped the default toolbar button, moved button to top left-ish of screen, clicked button to select 'Edit Buttons' and crash. Why interesting? Not much was happening, also a nice error log entry...

Endorse or distribute but the mod has been developed and discussed in clear view on their official forums. Looking at some of the cases taken to court these days I'm sure a sufficiently determined or motivated person could push the issue, this may result in nothing more than some bad publicity but that's enough to have the game banned from schools. It is not a risk worth taking. I am not advocating that the mod be burned with fire, all that needs to happen is for it to be made opt-in or for the opt-out option to be obvious and simple.
-
Hum. The sending of any kind of user data without first requesting permission from the user is probably illegal in Europe. Defaulting to opt in without providing an obvious and simple means of opting out is probably illegal in Europe. If this mod were ever to make its way into, say, a school environment SQUAD could end up facing some embarrassing questions or worst case, a law suit. Let me repeat, this is simple fact: In its current form this mod is probably illegal in some areas and as such could result in legal action to be taken against SQUAD.

Unmanned launch, simple and cheep... 2 stage + SRBs, have you seen the price of decouplers? Shocking! -
I'm cross posting to two threads atm, may as well get you in on the action too... http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/60863-0-24-0-Toolbar-1-7-4-Common-API-for-draggable-resizable-buttons-toolbar?p=1281466&viewfull=1#post1281466 other information appears in following posts. Something is up and it's not just ScanSat. We did kind of know this from the Win x64 hack but now it's official it may be worth a quick look.

The restart was just a precaution, thanks for the info. I found I could provoke a crash state that would then persist across multiple game starts until a reboot, so something external to KSP/Unity must be maintaining some state. I updated the graphics driver for my HD6950 to the latest beta 14.7.rc1 and for the first time was able to run my clean install of IR and Chatterer. On a roll I added IS, game crashed where it usually does with IS which is just after the 'Resume Saved' or 'Start New' click. Removed IS. This does not appear connected to toolbar which is not doing anything at this stage of the game? Next up ScanSat. Got as far as the VAB and crash on VAB load. This is more typical of the crashes I'm seeing, for now I'm regarding IS as having a different issue. I can live without IR for now so out it went leaving Chatter and ScanSat at which point everything was working again. None of this may have any connection with toolbar, it's just the thing thing that sticks in my head was the working KAC that appeared to crash when opening the Space Centre screen. This could have been due to any number of things but I know that my stable configuration has survived several hours of play without issue. Some strange interaction is all I can imagine at this time. Don't suppose you could point me at a handy reference detailing thread safe C# and the threading model used by C# when accessing dlls?

[0.90] Magic Smoke Industries Infernal Robotics - 0.19.3
ecat replied to sirkut's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
And now the problem is gone! What did I do? I tried setting the cpu affinity of KSP to 1 core, still crashed but this time I could attach the part, the crash happened when I deleted the part. I closed FireFox (7 windows many tabs including flash) and suddenly IR works, restarted FF and still working... Humm... Some problem at the system level? <shrug> back to my main install. -
Okay... 000_Toolbar EditorExtensions MagicSmokeIndustries MechJeb2 ModStatistics NASAmission SCANsat Squad ModuleManager.2.2.0.dll toolbar-settings.dat The above works. If I add in either Chatterer or 'DMagic Orbital Science' I crash just after the space centre. If I remove MagicSmokeIndustries and toolbar then add Chatterer and 'DMagic Orbital Science' back in everything is fine. Also, I just did a reboot as FireFox was showing problems detecting mouse clicks - it's never done that before. Confusing. So, fresh install and start again. My post in the Infernal Robotics thread...

[0.90] Magic Smoke Industries Infernal Robotics - 0.19.3
ecat replied to sirkut's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I've been trying to track down some crashes that happen, or don't happen, depending on combinations of various mods. I created a brand new KSP Winx64 install, added only the IR mod and nothing else. Started the game, set some sound+graphics options, started a new sandbox game, into the VAB, moved the toolbar icon and set it up for IR, selected the basic command pod added a hinge and instant crash. The log file: http://www.i2net.me.uk/files/Games/KerbalSP/ErrorLogs/CleanKSP-FreshIR-asonlymod-output_log.zip I have been playing all day with a selection of mods it's just a certain few that were causing troubles - and even then perhaps only if certain other mods were installed. Curiously, all the mods that have caused problems have used toolbar - I have posts in that thread - yet I've played with chatterer installed without problem so it's not quite as simple. Anyway, we may be heading into the dread x64 stability region but as this is the most minimalist/simple crash config I've found so far I thought I'd pass it on to the experts. -
Sure. Windows x64. Here is the log from my recent attempt to run Infernal Robotics. I resumed saved game and went to the science centre where it crashed. Of note, there was no toolbar icon on the space centre screen or the science centre screen: http://www.i2net.me.uk/files/Games/KerbalSP/ErrorLogs/IR_output_log.zip List of GameData folderat the time of the above: 000_Toolbar Chatterer DMagic Orbital Science EditorExtensions MagicSmokeIndustries MechJeb2 ModStatistics NASAmission SCANsat Squad ModuleManager.2.2.0.dll toolbar-settings.dat As this is the n'th problem with toolbar related mods I suspect a conflict somewhere, I'll try some things and post back...

Not sure where to point the finger as so many mods are in flux atm but (using x64): Interstellar + toolbar: game crashed on final loading screen - removed IS and toolbar Kerbal Alarm Clock: Worked for one game start but some time later game crashed entering editor. Next start game crashed on final loading screen - removed KAC and toolbar SCANSat: game crashed on final loading screen - removed toolbar and game crashed at Resume Game Removed Kethane, game loaded. Added toolbar, game crashed at final load screen after Resume Game Removed toolbar and all looks good again. Conclusion: Something, somewhere is not quite right

Exciting idea k^2, so much so that I had a quick look around for space qualified electronics - expensive when ready assembled but doable. I have no affiliation with the following site, it has prices - competitive?- and a shopping cart so may be of interest to the passing reader: http://www.clyde-space.com/

Which species of primates do you think is the most aggressiv
ecat replied to Pawelk198604's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Humans also have the mental capacity to justify anything. We are naturally aggressive, thoughtless outside our own needs and in a position of immense power. Accepting that we collectively have problems is the first step towards finding the solutions. Nice video -
Magnetorquers, can't say I've ever heard of them but the effect used to work in game with the KAS electromagnet. I wrote a brief note about the effect last year, see second craft in the post: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/37707-0-23-5-Magic-Smoke-Industries-Infernal-Robotics-0-16-5b?p=601202&highlight=magnetic#post601202 I've just tried a quick test and it no longer appears to work, I think the KAS code has been changed

Which species of primates do you think is the most aggressiv
ecat replied to Pawelk198604's topic in Science & Spaceflight
There looks to be no contest: Muggings: I guess most primates don't have much worth taking. Humans win. Murder: Humans win. Persecution: Humans win. War: Humans win. Genocide: Humans win. Coercion: Humans win. The list goes on and that's just acts against others of our species. -
Here's one I have to hand And this remains one of my all time favourites in spite of its modest 6 jumbo payload From http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/33503-Show-off-your-B9-Designs!/page14?p=508910&viewfull=1#post508910

To add a little more perspective, the naturally occurring background radiation levels in parts of Finland reach 7 mSv a year, about 0.8uSv/h if I'm allowed to scale in a linear fashion. It's worth keeping this in mind when looking at the table of "levels of radiation as measured in 2009" about half way down the linked page. I also think all topics about nuclear reactors should include this (skip to around 12:12 for the explosions): and the less sensationalist but even more interesting

Let's see some Interstellar crafts!!!
ecat replied to Rabada's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Here are a couple of mine to keep this thread rolling A little Interstellar science rover I was playing with, complete with 40MW reactor and big wheels. Single launch to Mun even with the wheels sticking out, I think I heard FAR cry. Infernal Robotics Interstellar B9 ProceduralParts DMagic Orbital Science KWRocketry FAR My little Antimatter collector... It took several generations to circumvent some Infernal Robotics problems and Interstellar quirks, but I got there. Each 6 arm section, the above shows two sections, weighs in at over 325t housing 72 collectors and a large tank. Single, 4.7kt, 793 parts, launch to orbit of course Shown here with half of the cargo bays open... If you are in any doubt, yes, that is a BIG rocket! With an earlier version I sent the arms up in batches of three and had great fun watching MechJeb performing simultaneous docking operations, sadly Antimatter doesn't cross docking ports unless the vessel is focused. Still, this monster makes me smile Why didn't I go for beamed power? Antimatter took priority and I need some more science before I reach that node. -
So we do have an objective reality? Some of the posts here would suggest that all we have is an aggregate of observations, though no one has yet given me a general word to describe the processes we are observing. Well, apart from the word 'universe' which I find too general in scope to be useful. I think I'm lacking a frame of reference for some of these posts. The phrase 'all we have is observations', is that because science truly does not believe anything happens unless it is observed happening? Is it some spin (no pun intended) on the quantum world of collapsing probability functions? Or is this some comment about the delusionary nature of human perception? The latter would be particularly interesting, as the purest of the pure, mathematics, is the product of a delusionary species, patting a mathematician on the head while saying 'oh, the equation for area of a circle' is akin to patting an inmate on the head and saying 'but of course you are Napoleon' - this last bit is a joke @Dodgey That helped some and I was writing a reply but it was mostly waffling. Perhaps I'll try again later.

I have no idea what passes through your mind. I simply requested you to provide a term or phrase we could both use when referring to what I call the laws of physics. You declined the request and threatened to drag us all into the circle of hell known as philosophy. I replied to your comment on observation. What exactly do you you mean by observation? I imagine a blind man walking off the edge of a cliff and not succumbing to gravity, because, observation or lack of it in this case. We observe in visible light, infra-red, ultra violet, radio waves, micro waves. We have machines that observe and find the same results and machines which observe the observing machines. And if an observation is in doubt we look for associated phenomena as confirmation an event took place. Firstly, would you prefer the word validating? Maybe re-enforcing? Providing greater credibility to the default position and lessening the evidence against it? Even in mathematics the problem must be observed, the solution must be observed. An observed mathematical proof may be considered absolute but if observation is not considered sufficient evidence... your turn with this slippery petard. 100% accurate. Why is that important? If I drop an apple from my hand it will fall to the ground, this is enough for most people. If I drop an apple from a height of 1m it will hit the ground with a velocity of 4.905m/s is sufficient for almost everyone. In theory we can refine our equations down to Plank length and Plank time, we would still be unable the guarantee 100% accuracy but would it matter? "there is no independent reality". How exactly do you prove a negative? If you state "there is an independent reality" you can build evidence to eventually discredit the idea. Leaving the world of immaterialism for the world of pragmatism. If the aggregate of observations is self consistent and the best model of the universe we have available then I suggest we make best use of it. If this means calling it reality, well as I have no other frames of reference, I'm happy to do so

So you are invalidating my question on the grounds that the tree made no sound. Yet even if you were there at the time and heard the sound, since observation is subjective (should it then be subservation ?) your testimony would be simultaneously unverifiable and unfalsifiable. For a statement to have merit in the world of science it must be verifiable and/or falsifiable. Resorting to philosophy would get us nowhere. Except, this is the whole point of science and why the scientific approach has proven to be such a successful tool: First you make an observation. Then you propose a theory to explain the observation. Next you use your theory to make predictions about when the occurrence you observed will next happen or other observations you should be able make during the occurrence or how you would expect to observe similar occurrences in different circumstances, etcetera. Your theory makes predictions. If the predictions you make match these future occurrences you have not only taken a step towards proving your theory you have also taken a step towards proving your observation is actually part of a reality independent of yourself. Finally, you inform independent others of your findings and if your work is valid they too go on to confirm predictions and further confirm your theory and the existence of your observation as part of a reality independent of all of the involved individuals. No. This is exactly the sort of nonsense the scientific method seeks to eradicate. Tune in next week when we discuss: "Paranoia. The solipsists best friend?"

Then we are at an impasse. My position: The laws of physics are fundamental to the fabric of our universe. The theories we devise to explain how these laws function are the man-made mathematical models. Would you care to suggest a common term we can use to refer to these actual interactions which occur without heed for our observation, understanding or reasoning?
