made it to Jool and back 3 kerbal crew replacing the original 3 kerbal crew .... that lead to a 6 kerbal EVA.

Delta V = ISP x ln(TOTAL MASS / DRY MASS) x Gravity Delta V = Thrust Effeciency of your engines TIMES the natural log of the ratio of total mass divided by the dry mass, where dry mass is the total mass minus the mass of just the fuel. If your ISP is in seconds (which it is in KSP) then you need to multiply by the Gravitational constant, 9.80665.

I ran out of time for formatting, so I'm going to stick the pictures up for now. ENJOY! 6 Kerbal Spacewalk! Juggling 6 kerbals in space is way more difficult than I ever imagined. these spacesuits are not designed for being stationary... Swap out crew and get ready to see if we can make it home. Burning for home Plenty of fuel. Hurray! Deorbiting over KSC. I left the engines attached longer than I usually do because I was a lot closer to KSC than I usually am. I saw an opportunity... I've never gotten this close before on just parachutes... I mean, REALLY close TADAA!

My FIRST Mun landing was a huge success. Cheers all around. My wife came running to find out what all the yelling was about. That kind of a day. My SECOND Mun landing, the one where my buddies got on Skype after I convinced them to get KSP and we did a Mun Race ... that one .... not so much. Required sending help. Then a 3rd ship was sent with even more empty seats. But it landed way too far away. So .... I gave up and did something else. My THIRD Mun landing was a success again. I did an Apollo style tribute for the anniversary, and it was mostly a success. Was hoping to land at the memorial site, but that had to be abandoned. Still landed and returned home just fine, tho. ((edit)) Don't ask me how my first Duna landing went. Lets just say I haven't sent a manned mission to Duna since then. ((another edit)) I found this image. I was so new to the game at the time that I didn't know how to Screenshot, so I grabbed my cellphone.

I'm super confident now. But, I've only just had a couple of interplanetary successes. My space station is complete through multiple (over a dozen) launches and all manually docked (no Mech Jeb). I've recently had a hugely successful Jool mission. But, I haven't had an SSTO that can go from Kerbin to Laythe and back like some people. I haven't had a lander that can return from Eve, like some people. I'm good and getting better. I put myself middle of the road, but I'm confident that things are going well.

UPDATE: Phase 2, The Harbart Saga Adam: "Oh no. Oh no no no. OH NO." Shepdous: "What's going on?" Adam: "We have a problem." Shepdous: "What is it?" Adam: "How soon until a rescue ship can get here?" Shepdous: "Adam, what is going on?" Adam: "WE'RE OUT OF PUDDING!" Mission Control: "Jool Team, come in, Jool Team." Adam: "OH THANK KERBIN" Harbart: "We are here, Control, go ahead." Mission Control: "A resupply vessel has been commissioned. We are going to bring you guys home and send a new crew to take over for a while." Harbart: "Oh? Really?" Shepdous: "Control, we thought this was an extended operation." Mission Control: "This thing has turned political, and we have loads of new funding. The Jool Outpost is now the jewel of the skies. That's what they are calling it during the elections last week." Shepdous: "Can't say I'm unhappy to be going home so soon." Harbart: "Yeah, I think I'm very much OK with this." Adam: "DID YOU TELL THEM WE'RE OUT OF PUDDING?" Shepdous: "..." A new launcher has been designed. This one is much more effecient. Liftoff. Pushing away from Kerbin and headed to deep space. Arriving at Jool Through sheer luck (because there is no way I could plan this good) we finish our circularization burn using nearly the last of the fuel in our drop tanks. We drop the heavy outer tanks and switch to RCS for docking. The Jool System as it appears now.

Shepdous: "Control, sending image now. You have got to see this view." Adam: "Whoa" Harbart: "Whoa" Mission Control: "Copy that, boys. Whoa, indeed." Adam: "I brought cake if anyone wants a slice." Shepdous: "Not now, Adam! We've still got work to do." Adam: "Its here somewhere. One of those cabinets, I think." Harbart: "Adam ... " Harbart: "Adam? Adam? Do you copy? Adam?" Shepdous: "Har, what's going on down there?" Harbart: "Shep, you aren't going to belive this..." Adam: "Hey, guys! This wasn't the cabinet with the cake in it." Harbart: "Adam, get back in here." Adam: "No way! THIS IS AWESOME!" Shepdous: "Harbart, is he doing what I think he's doing?" Harbart: "If you look out the window, you'll see for yourself." Shepdous: "Har, what are we going to do with him?" Adam: "HEY GUYS! YOU MADE IT!" Mission Control: "If you kerbalnauts are done having fun, there is some work to be done, you know." Shepdous: "Roger, Control." Harbart: "Roger." Adam: "Oh yeah! My cake!"

Notes: My first time making it to Jool with more than just a probe. My first time ever juggling multiple ships. Sure, it was only 2 ships, but I gained mad respect for you guys who can do this. It was nerve racking. I kept switching crafts and checking time to intercept to make sure I did, indeed, have that 30 day window. Mech-Jeb used for delta-V calculations only. All piloting was done as if it didn't exist. I find this to be more fun. Thanks for reading! Comment with any thoughts or concerns or suggestions. Mission Control: "We have liftoff." News Reporter: "And there she goes. The Delta II rocket lifts off into the sky carrying the satellite payload that will begin this ambitious project to the planet Jool." Adam: "Whoa..." Shepdous: "Adam, did you see that? All looks good over here." Adam: "Whoa..." Shepdous: ".... Adam? You there? ... Adam?" Adam: *crunch crunch* "THEY HAVE Kwix Bars!" Shepdous: "..." Mission Control: "Stage 1 booster separation good. Stage 2 ignition go." Harbart: "Shep, satellites are looking good. When are we scheduled to launch?" Shepdous: "A few hours after they hit orbit, just to make sure all is well." Adam: "Kwix Bars, y'all!" *crunch crunch* "Didn't you hear me?" Mission Control: "Fairings separation good. Payload is in orbit." Mission Control: "Jool Team, prepare for launch." Shepdous: "Har, can you grab Adam? Its time to suit up." Adam: "I'm right here, you know." Shepdous: "... would you wipe your face, for goodness sakes man" Adam: *crunch crunch* "What?" -- some time later -- Mission Control: "Liftoff of the JVL Jool Launch Vehicle" Adam: "WHOA" Shepdous: "Liftoff looks good. Wish us luck, boys." Harbart: "Adam, please don't get crumbs on the throttle controls." Shepdous: "All systems good." Harbart: "Nominal. Check." Adam: "I can't reach my Koke Cola from my seat." Mission Control: "We have good main engine separation. Confirm." Shepdous: "Main engine separation confirmed." Adam: "Guys ... I don't feel so good." Shepdous: "Transitioning to interplanetary transfer." Harbart: "Separation clean. We are go." Adam: *hurk* Harbart: "Uh, control? We are going to cut transmissions for a moment to check on someon--- er something. We'll see you at Jool." Adam: *hurk* -- meanwhile back on Kerbin -- Mission Control: "Jool satellites on track. Planning intercept" Mission Control: "This is going to be a little tricky, but all seems to be going according to plan. Satellite relay should arrive 30 days before Jool Team. This gives us our window to prepare." Mission Control: "Satellites approching Jool, prepare for deployment." Mission Control: "Deploying" Mission Control: "Navigating satellites into orbital positions." Shepdous: "Control, all is well here. Approaching Jool." Adam: "I'm fine, thanks for asking!" Harbart: *chuckle* Shepdous: "We are preparing for aerobraking." Adam: "Wasn't me this time. I didn't brake anything." Harbart: "No, Adam .... aerobraking. We're doing the slowing down thing." Adam: "Oh, yeah... can you pass me the Keritos chips?" Shepdous: "....." Adam: "Holy Kerbal on a candle! WE'RE ON FIRE!" Harbart: "Adam! Its fine! ADAM!" Adam: "AAAAAAAAH" *munch munch* Harbart: "Adam ...." Adam: "What, I eat when I'm scared." Shepdous: "Control, all is fine here. Systems nominal. Looking good." Mission Control: ".... aaaah OK. Then, begin final burn for stable orbit." Shepdous: "Control, is fuel gauge accurate? We seem to be going through it awfully fast." Harbart: "Suck in your gut, boys, we are running thin." Adam: "... that actually works?" Shepdous: "..." Mission Control: "Looks like a stable orbit. Congrats team." Adam: "I DID IT!" Shepdous: "It was a team effort. Thank you, Control." Adam: "I got the top off this darn Koke Cola. Stubborn bugger." Shepdous: "..." Mission Control: "All three satellites deployed correctly, Jool Team in stable equatorial orbit. All is go." Shepdous: "Confirm. All good." Harbart: "Roger that." Adam: "Which one of these is us, again?"

Go watch Lost Scarf's play of it. That dude makes it hilarious. I've heard nothing but good things about it, although I have not yet played it myself. It does seem to have very limited replayability, tho.

This was one of the funniest, saddest, most touching, most Kerbal moments ever.

I'm imagining a Kerbal satellite that's just Jeb holding a radio dish with a star on his head like a weird space christmas tree...

[Showcase] Non Asparagus Launch Vehicles

Yes. I turned off the snap-to-alignment otherwise they crash into each other. Place the first set of 3x SRB. Then place the 2nd and 3rd. Then go back and adjust them so they are evenly spaced. Normal launch profile. Launch, then throttle back as you reach terminal velocity, gravity turn at 10km. -
Ion drive efficiency--how have you used them?
mellojoe replied to birrhan's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Polar mapping satellites. Since plane changes can be ridiculously expsive as far as Delta-V is concerned, a tiny satellite with a super effecient engine can start in any orientation and eventually end up in a polar orbit. I don't actually use the mapping mod, but I do "role-play" one from time to time. I built a craft that can launch 4 satellites/probes at once. So I've used the ion engines combined with RTG for power to move the 4 probes from my launch craft into the different orbital planes. -
my most recent plaque: "Coasting on fumes, intrepid Jebediah lands the White Knight on this tiny beach. From KSC to the Mun and back, our journey ends here." Basically my spaceplane landed on Kerbin, but without orbiting and picking my landing site first. This lead to me breaking atmosphere and seeing nothing but blue sea. Coasting and coasting and tiny blips of throttle kept me coasting until I could find this tiny beach. If you look at the last image, I was in the middle of the ocean, and turned south to reach that particular peninsula. Literally 4 units of fuel left and a tiny strip of beach for my landing site. Was epic. My heart was pounding the whole time. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/njsl4hx278e483c/F_eA5vz2lc

[Showcase] Non Asparagus Launch Vehicles

Struts. I use "stitch welding" with struts. Basically, you put struts from the orange tank to the SAS, and then more struts from the SAS to the next orange tank. Essentially I use short struts (3x symmetry, or 4x symmetry) across every seam in a stack. -
[Showcase] Non Asparagus Launch Vehicles
mellojoe replied to AustralianFries's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I made a replica of the Delta II launch vehicle. Works surprisingly well. Can get about 15t to LKO. A central core Mainsail surrounded by 9 solid rocket boosters. The central core plus 6 SRB's fire at liftoff. Then when the 6 SRB's run out, the other 3 are ignited to continue the burn. Those drop and the Mainsail is throttled to maximum for the final push. Payload into LKO. This is a simple 2 stage central core. The 2nd stage basically pushes the payload from sub-orbital to orbit at any altitude you wish, from 80x80 all the way up to 250x250. This rocket is ready for commercial use, so put your orders in today. The Delta II can hold two standard sizes of payload using the "Common Payload Interface." ((edit)) Here's the reference model. If only I could paint my orange tanks blue... Mine is all stock except for Procedural Fairings, one of the best mods available. -
Thanks for all the work on this e-dog. Absolutely brilliant. I don't use many mods, but this and Crew Manifest are now staples. I recommend them to everyone. I hope Squad hires you or at least buys this mod from you and makes it stock.

No pictures sadly, but I took my space-plane to the Mun and back. Ran out of fuel, and had to coast home on fumes. My de-orbit put me right in the middle of the ocean, so I had to find any piece of land I could to set her down. With 4 units of fuel left, we touched down on a tiny beach in the foothills of some mountains. Jebediah, as usual, saves the day. My tiny island. I crossed the sea of blue to this speck, and sat down and waited on the rescue team. Heart pounding, sweat dripping, we made it. This was the view behind me. When I hit atmosphere, all I saw was blue. No land anywhere. Looking at the map, I turned south and found a little tiny dot. That dot was my beacon.
