I'm having this same problem. What's the problem with the default RSS config that makes it do this? Should I try a different texture pack? I'm using the 2048.

You need launch clamps! They're under the Structures tab.

Jets have better atmospheric efficiency and they're lighter than rockets so it cuts down on total mass on the pad. The drawback is, as you said, the high part count.
