  1. I fast forwarded for 12 in-game years and not a single unknown object spawned. I'm bummed. And yes, I toggled the thingie to show unknown on the map.
  2. Hello! There is a lack of condensed reading material for KSP, as far as I can tell. The game isn't finished, so it is impossible to write a complete work at this time, but the "alpha access" principle could be taken to literature as well. A lot of things are shown off in youtube videos (which are great), forum posts and individual websites. For a newbie or someone with a specific interest (calculating dv and stage setup, for example) this might be kind of a challenge. So here is my suggestion: a) Write a manual for the KSP team to give away with the game, for a salary. Write an ebook for self-publishing on Amazon for a dollar or two, with the promise of updates until the game is done. This could be done both in English and German. My background: I am a bilingual mechanical engineer (English and German), and before I got my degree I worked in graphic design and advertising for nearly 6 years. Right now I'm finishing my Master's while working an engineering student job in a semiconductor plant and raising a family. Technically I am capable of this. My question: Before I start focussing on an endeavor such as this, I would need to know if there are any takers. I know how time consuming authoring and formatting a book is, so the prospect of actually doing this is a little frightening. At the same time I see a lot of success in some Amazon-based self-releases that came in cheap in the beginning (Wool by Hugh Howey for example, with a dollar or less for each short story). A dev comment would be awesome as well, especially since I'm not sure how their stand is towards allowing third-party publications regarding their product. I know there are strategy guides and such out there for numerous games and software, but I haven't gotten into the legal stuff for that yet. Cheers
  3. Hello! Finishing a rather complicated rocket (and flying as we speak ) I had the idea that a nice implementation into the game would be a setting for decouplers to automatically decouple when a certain condition is reached, such as "tank 05 empty". that way I could just launch and only worry about some manual details of the staging if necessary and monitor the flight path better, without needing to switch back from map view. This could be extended to other parts, such as "do science in this module when this other module is active", resulting in science cascades. I could very well envision this as an extra submenu next to subassemblies and key shortcuts in the editors. Any thoughts? Or is there a mod for this "parts logic"? Or even a way to implement this myself?!
  4. I've had a stack destroyed when an orange tank separated from a medium grey tank (you know, to prevent overheating of mainsails). Those tanks were actually reinforced in their connection by girders with strut connections. Worked like a charm before, now it just randomly breaks on ascent. Tested this twice, happened both times. Mainsail keeps firing, can't separate the rest of the stack because the thrust is too high. Awesome framerate now though, so I can see it all going to bits smoothly.
  5. EDIT: relemetry haha... no... telemetry Hello, everyone! There are a few things I'm looking for to enhance my KSP experience, but I couldn't find a solution that suits my needs. I'd be happy if someone could point out where I can find the features I'm listing later in this post, or whether anyone would be willing to create a plugin or integrate these ideas in theirs. I know how to program a bit, but not enough to make a KSP plugin. I've never used any mod (crappy computer: don't touch it when it runs!), but I'm running into serious planning probloems when my missions get more complicated. I went to Duna and back, visited Eve and landed, orbited Jool, orbited Moho with a probe. When I design my ships there's still so much uncertainty that it's hard to get to business with an actual Moho lander/return mission. I've figured out the details that I need/want to know, but couldn't find any plugins delivering this sort of thing. Here's a draft (sorry for the scribbling): bilder uploaden So basically I want the following: 1. flight path on a graph with height vs. speed over surface, including a prearranged "optimum" and current data to see how you're doing 2. flight simulation plot: sort of like the flight path, but with more parameters regarding stages. height vs. orbital speed with end-of-stage markers and indicators for atmospheric drag 3. landing simulation plot: height vs. orbital speed as above, plus height vs. inversed vertical speed, also including plan and telemetric data with staging/chute points 4. as a requirement or the abovementioned plots I would like an in-game calculator for delta-v for prearrenged stage packages. My rockets have 10+ stages, and I want to be able to categorize them so I have an atmospheric stage, an orbital inserter, a payload delivery and a return vehicle. I know mechjoeb lets you display dv, but not in the way I would like. 5. a stallr boy MAP. I haven't found anything like this for in-game yet. Sure I could plot out delta v vs. distance for kerbin, but a dynamic calculation for every body (including traversing from Eve to Jool for example) would be awesome, along with a current delta-v meter so you can see where you can go with what you have. This is a lot to ask, and I might get down to fixing a solution for myself some day (maybe in a year or two if I stick with it). As I said any comments are welcome, even if it is to gtfo to another forum/thread. Thank you!
  6. I haven't seen the Apollo events, and I don't expect to see any manned landings of any kind in my lifetime (30 now). I might be a pessimist, but I think more like a realist: What potential benefit would we have from a base or colony on the Moon or on Mars now? apart from a proof of concept, we'd have so much cost for so little benefit that it would hurt... We can send probes anywhere we want in the solar system, and land them in most places. It's relatively easy - compared to manned flight including landing and a roundtrip ticket - to place instruments like rovers and telescopes on the Moon.
  7. There you go, good sir. First attempt to share images, hope it works. bilder uploaden bilder hochladen kostenlos EDIT: Was my first 3-Kerbal return mission to Mün as well after messing around a lot with interplanetary shenanigans that then exploded in my face or missed the target completely due to oversizing everything and losing handling ability.
  8. I had a Buzz Kerman the day after the Moon landing anniversary. I kid you not, I have screenshots, no editing!
  9. Anyone else smell sabotage? I mean, Glonass being the competitor system to GPS, and the Stuxnet incident as a proof of concept... </conspiracy>
  10. Taken from the development update on July 2. More noise? Boy, I need to get my hands on one of them decoder tools.
  11. I tried sending in 4 Kerbals to try out my theory of lining up 4 kerbals. My interplanetary ship started from Minimus, and I decided to launch another one straight from Kerbin with a specialized lander with tons of parachutes. the Kerbin ship was based on and old launcher I did for my first mission to other celestial bodies. The more I figured out about the rest of the game, the worse my designs got. Back then I was limited by the lack of memory crash too, so I had to do weird things like stack two orange tanks on top of each other with a mainsail at the bottom, then strap four of those around the craft for the first stage. Needless to say explosions did happen, but surprisingly less often than with my new asparagus stuff... Turns out it's a bad idea running two almost identical trajectories at the same time, so both vessels ended up in hyperbolical orbits around Duna (barely). Also, big designs with lots of fuel don't seem to be relevant in interplanetary travel, compared to smaller missions. At least with my designs. I'll make an update when I get around to actually landing the kerbals.
  12. +1 Kerbal Internets for you. This is beautiful engineering.
  13. Well, forget about the satellite then. Line up four kerbals next to the pyramid. If that's not doing anything. maybe a planetary constellation for the inner three planets? Anyone noticed the planets lining up every once in a while? I know you can calculate this, but I'm a lazy [FLUFFY BUNNIES] right now.
  14. Celestron 8 SE. It's a butter price. Beautiful body, but her price... I might have to swap my next two generations fo gaming rig for that telescope. I once shot Jupiter with my smartphone camera through a manual telescope. You can tell Jupiter, not so much the moons (which were visible by the eye though). Once I figure out how to post pictures I might put something up here. and yes, redneck engineering with that camera
