  1. All boiling points are depressed in a vacuum, relative to 1atm. Whether or not a certain liquid "boils" is another question. Sub-boiling evaporation would also be greatly accelerated. Even solid materials slowly sublimate in vacuum, although this process is very slow and varies greatly depending on the properties of the material. Some metals (eg: zinc) are precluded from use in space because they sublimate too quickly. Video is (most often) compressed, if it was streaming 30 full-res, uncompressed 4k images to you per second, yes there would be a ton of lag. A 4k jpeg, for example, ought to load up pretty quick. 4k is just the number of pixels, it doesnt imply anything about size of the data.

Yup. "Fusion boosted" weapons were an early refinement, almost all fission weapons were/are "boosted". The fusion reaction doesnt add significant energy to the yield itself, but it catalyses more efficient fission. Pure fission is very possible, but boosting much reduces the chance of a "fizzle" by providing a great many starting points for the fission chain reaction to start. Otherwise there is a chance that the weapon will detonate "in between" natural fission events (the timescales are very short here, a fission has to happen in the time it takes for the primary to compress the secondary, and before the secondary rebounds and starts to expand again) causing a sort of mis-start of the chain reaction and a "fizzle" with a greatly reduced yield.

  4. Its one of these threads! Celestial Command - https://store.steampowered.com/app/330460/Celestial_Command/ Its had a few mentions in the past on the forums, but it hasnt come up for a couple years and it has undergone a great deal of development. Its still in early access but I have had it in my library for a long while and development has been steady and significant and I think it is shaping up into something very good. A significant update is about to drop as well. Its not KSP, its scope and relationship with realism is very different, but its right up the KSP-players street if you ask me. According to the devs, they are struggling to fund themselves and development is at risk. I figure I can do them a tiny favour and make this post. Selfish, of course, I dont want development to end, but give it a look, I think its pretty cool.

I think I mentioned it once before a long time ago, but Id like to see a reverse zombie movie. Movie starts with planet fully zombified. One zombie notices a patch of flesh is turning pink and unusually smooth, starts freaking out, spreads it via contact to nearby zombies. Fully humanned zombie are terrified and freaking out, much faster and stronger than zombies, cause havoc among the population. Zombies congregate to attempt to re-zombify, it doesnt work, are attacked by humans slowly coming to terms with situation. The human disease spreads. Plot follows from there. I think theres a lot to work with. It would be the equivalent of a normal human population suffering from an epidemic that causes extreme aggression along with super-speed, super-strength, increases resistance to physical damage and vastly increased intellect. Scarier than zombies by a long chalk!

Interestingly, sharks feed like this. Shark smells blood, attacks, makes more blood, draws more sharks, which - in frenzy - attack nearby animals, more blood, more sharks. But zombies dont just "make noise", they make noise when attacking but otherwise are fairly non verbal. Note that a wandering zombie doesnt attack or chase another wadering zombie, it seems they can tell "zombie shuffle" from "human voices". So, when a sound source attract zombie, they attack, and that noise attract zombies which attack and so on. But there will come a point where the prey is caught or chased away (or otherwise no longer making noise) so who is making noise now. At some point, the attacking zombies at the back of the crowd will notice that they are no longer hearing prey but only zombie shuffle. Crowd dissipates. Further, zombies dont eat you, they infect you and move on (they dont even eat brains, thats just a myth, otherwise "destroying the brain" would not kill them) so prey animals are very rapidly converted by a feeding frenzy, limiting time for large crowds to be attracted. Dog rabies epidemic is naturally resisted by human infrastructure, distance between dogs and the fact that rabies doesnt make dogs actively seek out other dogs to bite. Zombies eat human infrastructure, are highly motivated to spread their disease (and do so using a degree of intelligence far beneath a live human, but with a low animal cunning) and they (and their prey) are far more numerous. Also there is a vaccine for rabies. A dog with rabies doesnt go "Ugh, man I feel a bit under the weather, but Im fine I swear, I can still make it to the ball game! NO I HAVNT BEEN BITTEN BY ANYTHING why do you ask?"

lol yeah maybe its just "Office Space" but filmed from a different perspective Or maybe its the movie of the 1-second between me clicking the "start" button and the menu opening up. Or its GOTH:TRON (omg that combo fits so well its scary) Indeed. Its fun, and interesting, to come up with speculative theories, but if there was no overarching concept written into the story, there just isnt one there, so arguing that one interpretation is right and another wrong is meaningless. Its not an artistic flourish (leaving interpretation solely to the viewer) that I particularly like, but thats "art" for you. Maybe its the only way to write this kind of story. I do think it is better than just the sum of its fight sequences though - the art direction, the atmosphere, the way it perfectly plugged into the particular flavour of 90's teenage angst, that soundtrack... And now, things that were 20 years old when the Matrix first released: Apocalypse Now Alien Buck Rogers in the 25th Century Mad Max 1 Rocky II Star Trek the Motion Picture Definitely at least in terms of films talked about after 20 years, The Matrix is in very good company. **edit** omg I just realised that that episode of Rick&Morty is about the matrix...

@TheSaint I think the matrix gets a lot of bad press for not being "the absolute pinnacle of cinema" whereas if you dont try and look at it through a lens of "Im looking for something profoundly deep" its actually a very original and well made thing. The Wachowskis didnt actually put anytihng that deep into it, a lot of the "mystery" is open-ended with the intention being that the viewers make up their own minds about what they think is going on. Now Im not really a fan of that, I dont like loose strings and dont really like having to make up the story myself, that is I think is its major flaw but is one of artistic purpose which is highly subjective. And since we are talking about it right now, you could say that they were supremely successful, given that the Matrix is 20 years old this year (!!!!!!) But I do think that matrix #1 is an action masterpiece and that the trilogy as a whole is "quite good".

The matrix trilogy, taken as a whole, is a good watch. So the story has some weird parts, go watch "Begotten" then come back and tell me the story of the matrix is muddled. "The Matrix" part one, as a standalone film, is one of the best action movies of the 20th century and redefined the genre. The soundtrack to "The Matrix" is one of the best rock/alternative albums released in the 90's.

    Error 1020

Definitely at least someone was destined for a great and exciting career in space travel, was just getting int the whole "online society" thing, had all their posts deleted by a forum derp and rather than start over left it all behind to pursue Art.
  15. I picked up some nice 70's and 80's literature on space weapons Ironically from a CND charity bookshop Tiny bookshops are the best. Often the science books are quite obscure because nobody that routinely go to charity shops recognise them, or are interested. And some of them can be quite rare - Those books I mention, I think I spent £20. I looked them up on amazon and the total was closer to £200. Oh and I picked up a quantum physics primer published in 1946 just the other day. Its not even my field but its just really interesting to have/see literature from the history of science.
  16. What are we talking? Realistic, sci-fi, speculative but realistic, full on engineering diagrams, old-timey, new-timey? This was one of my faves when I was a kid: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1672077.Visions_Of_Space Its got a lot of like, 60s-70 speculative illustrations in it. Von Braun concepts, that kind of thing. A little fantastic.

ok, phew, I'll disarm the nuke. **edit** bloody cant remember what I was trying to do on sci+space now!!
  19. Science and Spaceflight is giving me an "Error 1020" on multiple platforms, something about a security service to protect from online attacks? Something going down? Or false positive? *edit* ...not confined to sci+space
  20. Coke is sweet but you'd still have to put in about a quarter mug to add another teaspoonful, and then you're also adding a quarter mug extra water. I suppose if you dont take sugar it would be more noticable, but my empirical work was....not exactly robust
  21. In the end, if you like it, its good coffee and nobody can argue. *** Whats that? You want some really obscure coffee trivia? Did you know that you can add a surprisingly large quantity of coca-cola to a coffee before you start to notice anything weird? It meshes with the flavour almost completely, doesnt curdle, the first thing you notice as you add more is the sharpness of the fizziness coming through. Told you it was obscure

lolol Thanks for the link, I thought yall were talking about those replicant detector machines from BladeRunner!
  23. I dont mind grinding and tamping, but what I hate is the vibrating rumble noise that electrically driven machines make. Not great early in the morning either. We've just bought our first house and are shopping for an espresso solution, I really like this kind:
  24. Only expensive machines can make good coffee unfortch. I've never had a "pod" coffee of any brand that did what it said on the tin. Or that was better than instant tbh. #unapologeticcoffeesnob
