  1. The various things on the list, some of them probably never will happen, some of them will probably be quite useful for future use on bodies with lower gravity, so its hard for me to say which will never be used, or which will be used most, given no stipulated timeframe. But I've always had a weird thing about Orion. It is supposedly very well supported by theory, mathematics and what-have-you, in that its capabilities should be exactly what has been calculated - abilities which are quite significant. But I just cannot get past the whole exploding H-bombs a few yards away from your craft being at all sensible. And more than that, sometimes figures are given about the amount of energy being harvested from each explosion, sometimes very high percentages given (I forget what the highest I saw has been but somewhere in the 50% ballpark). Im sure the "shaped charge" scheme they have going will increase the energy capture, but up to 50%? Im sure the maths is very sound, but I just dont buy it. And that is hard for me, being all sciencey and whatnot. (Though the whole "Cant be launched from Earth" thing doesnt seem to be an impediment for me...just build it in space...)
  2. What a weird response. Im reading precisely nothing into anything...I have taken the things I have responded to, and my responses can be taken in turn, quite literally.
  3. You got one. And sometimes we dont get everything that we prefer.
  4. Yeh, that would seem ok to me. What is your endgame here?
  5. Aww yey-ah! And...just...maintaining it!
  6. Yes and no. On the one hand, it IS a little weird to get an extremely up-beat and optimistic devnote and 10 seconds later read a sad departure note for a significant portion of the major players at Squad. On the other hand, 99% of the talk going on is either gibberish or pointless. Whilst it would be wrong to tell people they cant express their opinions on a public forum, there aint a lot to be done by us apart from wait. Squad have given us far more information than we are owed.
  7. Not enough hours in the day? Never find enough time for those essential tasks? KSP is the game for you!
  8. Ok, just thought of this, so its not a fully fledged engineering proposal, nor is it guaranteed original. I was inspired by @Ty Tan Tu's thread: So, you find all of the interesting historical objects in NEO, and neatly tend them into the "museum orbit". They would all share the exact same altitude, inclination etc. but would follow each other in a "string", in this way they would only require minor tending to maintain separation/position. The museum building itself would be a toroidal structure surrounding the exhibit "string". In this way the main building can share the same orbit as, and remain stationary with respect to, the exhibits. Small changes in altitude would allow the main building to move up and down the exhibit string without perturbing them. (See Neal Stephensons "SevenEves" for where I got this idea) Most importantly, the exhibits are *still in orbit where we left them*. Not in the exact same orbit, but still *in* orbit, in their "natural habitat" if you like. Sounds neat, no?
  9. I dont remember 100 but had a little internal party when I reached a 1-to-3 rep-to-comment ratio, pushing hard now for 1-to-2 but I think I've found my level Eternally jealous of those folk who have ridiculous 14-to-1 ratios...dang modders...
  10. Best to be careful on any internet location but its also not like the windows admin password is the cutting edge of security, its more like hanging a "do not disturb" sign than a keyed lock. All of this info (which aside from pulling the HD has all been "here is how to use the legit password reset utilities") is easily available with 30 seconds on google anyway. If he was asking how to get into a locked steam account, or circumvent an admin password remotely, that would raise more red flags. As far as nefarious schemes go, a two line question in the KSP lounge is hardly Ernst Stavro Blofeld material! But OP? Negative a billion points for forgetting your password so fast! (did you check the status of your capslock?)
  11. I did get that, just used the flat-earth as an example - as "flat-earthers" often use similar "skepticism of the mainstream" positions to support their "theories". Apologies if it read as a bit too confrontational, peace!!
  12. The spring behaviour can be adjusted, no? I have heard more than once that the wheels behave almost normally if you tweak them right?
  13. Time to roll out this old chesnut again! https://library.sciencemadness.org/library/books/ignition.pdf If the pdf doesn't load or appears corrupt, try another browser, the document does work. Its written in quite an informal, documentary style, but is a widely respected brief history of rocket fuel research. Hardcopies go for several hundred dollars. This is also an excellent document detailing the design history of the safeguard anti-ballistic missile system: http://srmsc.org/pdf/004438p0.pdf Pretty easy to read, lots of official detail. Even if you are not too interested in the military aspect, the rocketry of this particular project is fascinating, and gives some insight into how high-priority projects of this ilk are run. Novels-wise, these are excellent: Seveneaves, Neal Stephenson Aurora, Kim Stanley Robinson The Nights Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton - OK this one is more a bit of fun, but I really like it. WorldWarZ in space essentially. And the space combat is dealt with quite nicely, the only real handwavy-part is their FTL drives. Music wise? Erm...well this was the first "compact disc" I ever bought https://www.amazon.co.uk/Various-Artists-Space-Themes/dp/B000YILH46 Oh and if you havn't already found it, this site is indispensable: http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/ Intended for people writing science fiction, it is a repository for lots of space related information. Especially good for different forms of propulsion, from current to near future to more exotic hypotheticals. Another excellent resource for documents and books: https://archive.org/ Worth a ruffle through, lots of NASA docs on there. tip-top-tip: when googling, use the term "filetype:pdf" (without quotes) to find documents. Of course you can enter other file types.
  14. Awesome, things are shaping up! Thanks again.
  15. @Yakuzi Thanks! One last question: Do landers (with legs) still slide sl-o-o-o-wly down very slight inclines?
  16. Do they at least have less friction in a preferred direction? ie: in line with the wheel itself, as if the wheel were a ski? What do you mean by "cant rotate them"? Do you mean they only operate as a wheel if the very bottom of the wheel (in relation to whatever mounting plate is attached) is contacting the ground? Or do you mean the tyres dont rotate/roll? Thanks!
  17. Fine, but taking this principle literally in all possible contexts makes as much sense as instantly believing every word you hear anywhere ever. Humans are blessed with intelligence, and taking your own birthday as an example, one automatically would compare it to various things like: Your own perceived biological age (ie: if you are say, 18, you know with quite some certainty that you are not 45, with a little less certainty that you are not 44, a little less that you are not 43 etc.) The likelihood that people will want to deceive you of your age and are invested enough in that motive to keep the conspiracy going for your entire life up to now, including ensuring the cooperation of however many people are necessary. Remember, several documents will have to be forged if a deception lasting more than a few minutes is to take place. The degree to which the given date matches known history. For example, do you have any memories implausibly close to that date? Do you remember any anachronistic things, like a TV series you ought to have been too young to watch? Other miscellaneous things like: has a medical professional ever expressed surprise when given your age? Have you ever had any age-related illnesses/injuries? So every hazily defined "fact" that anyone comes across is automatically given a certain degree of intelligent judgement. It may not be infallible, but it gets us through the day without having to rely on "blind trust". Otherwise you are implying that you require NASA to individually visit *everyone on the planet* in person with the industrial equipment, personnel and documentation (with people standing by to physically demonstrate the principles given in said supporting documentation, and a teaching lab to first demonstrate to you all fundamental physical principles first) necessary to give physical proof of a spherical earth, before the concept can be generally accepted. And before you type "No, that is being too pedantic", yes it is too pedantic, and it *is* what you require if you want to live a scientific life that is 100% devoid of faith in anything. Yes, faith is a big part of science. And living as a human. PS: "... especially when it comes from a government agency. " Is a red-flag kind of statement for me. Makes about as much sense as "You can trust this agency because it is non-government!". Sure. The universe is not that black-and-white.
  18. I have been following the devnotes, but I dont recall wheels being mentioned for a while. Did I miss a fix (Im not in a KSP playing cycle at the moment) or are there still issues with strength and friction? Do landers still slide around on their legs? Can we look forward to new/updated wheel mods after 1.2 release? Cheers
  19. NO. Not even with magical lossless components, as you have described a lossless cycle with no energy input. At best, as long as you are not using substandard magic, the cycle could run forever. In reality all you have built is the worlds most expensive space heater
  20. Anyone who has taken a flight that flies more than a few hundred miles has personally experienced physical proof that the Earth is round, journey times/distances between points on a flat disc would be heavily distorted and point-to-point travel would no longer resemble a great-circle path. No orbital viewing required. You can track it on your own GPS, and if necessary you can check the raw data from the timing handshakes between satellites and if you think that might still be faked by some anonymous "deciever" (who would also have to fake much of known physics) then you are going to have problems with all issues regarding reality, like "am I really real" and the like. Ergo: if you are real, the world is a sphere, and if you are not, then the distinction between flat/sphere is irrelevant anyway as compared to other questions like "Is there an Earth at all?". **edit** On topic, this would be a pretty cool mod to try out, if the physics engine can work with it and accept such a disc-shaped body, and provide a realistic interpretation of the gravity effects. And also provided that there would be regions on the disc where the gravitational anomalies were gentle enough to allow practical craft to operate.
  21. Hi All, For the best of reasons, I would like to request the following thread be closed: Cheers
  22. If we can get one or two more confirmations that the orbit bug has been cast into the void I'll put a big "FIXED" on the OP and close up the thread
  23. Im pretty sure that gravity falling off proportional to 1/R is exactly why you have different orbital velocities and the resulting tidal effects.
