How do you Manage Heat in an SSTO?
Dogface replied to Dogface's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Thank you. I turn it off and havent had a crash yet. My crashes were happening after an ascent, so it makes sense that temp may have been playing a role. I also managed to get my SSTO back to Kerbin without exploding any parts. I mostly just dropped the Pe to 50km and aimed prograde, I opened my airbrakes (10) and burned RCS thrusters backwards (not sure that did much, but it gave me something to do). So it is a proven SSTO. I seem to have experienced less heat on the reentry than I did on the ascent. Thank you all very much for your advice. If you are having SSTO problems and looking for design hints, I used a heavily modified version of this ship... -
How do you Manage Heat in an SSTO?
Dogface replied to Dogface's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Thanks guys. I finally got an SSTO into a circularized orbit. The game crashed, so I will see later if it can reenter. I get a lot more crashes with v1. One thing I did was uninstall and reinstall. I think that helped a bit. Also installed four more engines. -
How do you Manage Heat in an SSTO?
Dogface replied to Dogface's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Thanks guys. I find SSTOs very frustrating. I have gone to all the planets, moons, put up two space stations, brought Kerbals back from Duna, flown two SSTOs in previous versions. But I cant seem to get a version1.0 SSTO into a circularized orbit. And making it worse is that I cannot tell if it is my flight plan or my design, or probably both. -
How do you Manage Heat in an SSTO?
Dogface replied to Dogface's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Thanks, I will try that. That is sort of what I am doing, but obviously not getting it just right. SSTOs are far more complicated than a rocket launch. And more aggravating. -
In order to escape gravity I am trying to get up speed, about 1000-1400m/s. But somewhere in that speed range my SSTO nose starts to heat up and eventually something explodes. I can keep the speed down, but then I dont get near an Ap of 70km. My nose is made up of air intakes, for obvious reasons. Do I need a heat shield for an SSTO noce?

I have built two successful SSTOs. One with the original parts, then another with the lifting body parts came out. Now I am building an SSTO with the v1.0 parts. In my previous SSTOs I could get to 20-22km before I ran out of intake air, and had to switch to rockets. Now I am having a hard time getting past 17km. So, I am curious what the limit is in v1.0 for air-breathing engines. What is the Maximum Altitude you have attained in an SSTO* before you had to switch from Air-Breathing engines to rockets? * This question only applies to successful SSTOs (circularized an orbit and returned to Kerbin).

Does Mechjeb handle aircraft autopilot too?
Dogface replied to mrklaw's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
FleshJeb is right, Smart A.S.S. is great for SSTO ascent. You can set and change pitch and heading. I do a manual takeoff then set HDG=90 PIT=10 (SURF > SURF) I think Spaceplane Guidance is best for landings. -
when did the KSP forums get so nasty?

I was not comparing KSP to ST. I was comparing small minded people.

People always say the same thing to me about KSP. Give it a try, its great. SpinTires Review - Never Been Happier To Be Stuck the crane is now usable to load logs. the game is still in alpha.

SPINTIRESâ„¢ Yeah, Spintires looks like a driving game, but its not. It is an open world physics simulation. And not just truck and mud simulation but everything, trees, rocks water. Its amazing. I was shocked when I saw a sapling get caught on the truck, bend over with truck and then as the truck past the sapling WHIPPED BACK. It also has a strategy element to it. There are a lot of different roads and trucks you could use and you have to find the best. I stayed up until 4am playing the other night. I love this game! on Steam http://store.steampowered.com/app/263280/ SPINTIRESâ„¢ Trailer

X-Axis swapped by Default? (Spaceplane)
Dogface replied to Th3F3aR's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I had a similar problem. It was that I had multiple control parts. And the wrong one had control. Before you take off, select "control from here" on the part which gives the proper nav-ball orientation. -
Cool, thanks. Funny video. I like the mood lighting too. Going to try it out.

BULLDOZER!!! Great Idea! I just made one to move the rock around, so I can see it every time I launch. You know what works well on bulldozers? Rockets.

Sooo, I spent the last week landing a class C asteroid at KSC. They are actually a lot lighter than they look (and twice as ornery). But... ...the minute I left it disappeared! I tried again and this time it seems to be sticking around (Hint: don't recover parts). So, I will be making that rock garden at KSC after all. Does anyone else have a rock garden? If so, how big is it so far?

Remember, eventually Squad is going to update aerodynamics. And then a lot of the crazy ships we have built won't fly. When that day comes we will be grateful for larger parts. And Squad is planning for that day. Evidenced by the fact that the recently redesigned antennas are all flush.

What's The One Thing That Niggles You About KSP

losing the maneuver node when I zoom out -
congrats

I have landed on Tylo. I was really confused at how hard it was. My first mission was my standard lander-probe that has landed on two-thirds of the planets and moons in the system. But it would run out of fuel about 100m about the surface. DOH! My second design landed with plenty of fuel (had a drop-tank on top of the probe), but it really needed more than the three lander legs it had.

How to control my dammed Kerbal on ladders?
Dogface replied to crazyewok's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Ah, Bill is not a retard, that would be someone else. In future make sure the ladders connect all the way to the walkway, and test it on the pad. You could try to jump (space) off the end, but he will probably just jump outward. As you are on the Mun, you could just use the jetpack to get up to the walkway.
