[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
loknar replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Did you try the flap setting for slowing down before landing? I was about to try this on my plane. It is very hard to land because it is big and I can't slow down more than 100m/s before landing/crashing without stalling. Drag is nice but you actually need more lift for a slow landing, IMO. Airbrakes don't help landing, just counter overspeed and wind (eg in special cases).- 14,073 replies

<shameless mod plug> http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/25367-0-21-Chatterer-v-0-5 </shameless mod plug> Based on this mod, the radio chatter is a mix of russian and english backwards. I realize that kerbals have no contact with human culture but that still makes total sense to me!

I really loled on this thread. honorable mention to Richy teh space man 582: Every ship part should be a cube.

579: A nearby black hole. 580: A nearby supernova. 581: A nearby galaxy. 582: Oh and monitor each kerbal dreams and aspirations and get points to buy makeup and jewelry when you fulfill their aspirations. I'll wait for 0.22 oki thx

Hmm. In the real space programs, people are vain scientists. Use English. You can't invent a new word for each of the same thing (orbit) just because its parent (CoM) is another of the same kind of object (Center of Mass). Or... use German! Kerbalraketeumlaufbahnperiapsisfahrtsgesellschaftskapitän.
-
Guys stop arguing.. Kerbal is not a real planet. It is just inside the game... I bet you feel pretty silly now!

Objectives and Challenges. Yes I agree this is like a day at the office! Well I understand other ppl might enjoy it and I might try. Because I have perspective and don't reject automatically what is not targeted to me. I guess I am not Squad's target market. I have so little free time to play the game. I already control myself from using too much fuel and building absurdly big rockets (for realism and because of FAR mod, aerodynamics restrictions).

[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
loknar replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
aerodynamics in thin atmosphere may seem strange. I think it may be normal to loose control except with high thrust (with vectoring) and a very good design. I think in re-entry, the ship is under drag instead of thrusting forward so that throws off the normal flight characteristics. A craft stable at sea-level is very different from a craft stable during re-entry. Correct me if I'm wrong. Example: Try putting any jet plane at 40km altitude.- 14,073 replies

[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
loknar replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I know what you're talking about. When you're >70km you exit the atmosphere and your control surfaces can't compensate for uneven thrust force. Make sure the CoG and CoT are aligned. Only tiny shifts will have huge impact at high thrust. Building a plane with non symmetric parts and wings, it is almost impossible to be perfectly aligned so I fixed this by using a rocket with gimbal (many don't). I use a rocket at the rear while air breathing turbines are on the wings. Ferram said your fuel distribution may be causing unbalance. That's another challenge but to a lesser extent in my case because I built a rather big plane. Does that help? Maybe post screenshots (F1)?- 14,073 replies

[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
loknar replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Hey Ferram, I just made another fresh install and my old save. The game loaded fine. Then closed the game and installed latest FAR and Chatterer: No files overwritten, only added files. loading the game, i get stuck on Squad/Spaces/PodCockpit/model Edit; test details Test 1: a) fresh install 21.1 - startup OK - startup 2nd time, OK (to be safe) copying FAR 0.9.6.2 - startup stuck on Squad/Spaces/PodCockpit/model --waited 10 minutes-- KSP is responding, just not apparently progressing, except for regular silly progress cues, with 9-22% cpu activity c) Alt-f4 to close ksp, log entries suggest warnings and errors, example: ._ModuleManager.dll: System.BadImageFormatException: Format of the executable (.exe) or library (.dll) is invalid. at Mono.Cecil.PE.ImageReader.ReadImage () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at Mono.Cecil.PE.ImageReader.ReadImageFrom (System.IO.Stream stream) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at Mono.Cecil.ModuleDefinition.ReadModule (System.IO.Stream stream, Mono.Cecil.ReaderParameters parameters) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at Mono.Cecil.ModuleDefinition.ReadModule (System.String fileName, Mono.Cecil.ReaderParameters parameters) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at Mono.Cecil.ModuleDefinition.ReadModule (System.String fileName) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at AssemblyLoader.ScanForBadTypeRefs (System.String file) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at AssemblyLoader.LoadExternalAssembly (System.String file) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 ._FerramAerospaceResearch.cfg' contains no data. ._FerramAerospaceResearch.dll (failed to load assembly) the real files does not start with "._" obviously. But that seems normal and the root cause may be the modulemanager But something is wrong with my pc. or something... Rolling back to older versions of FAR, by overwriting the files, down to 0.9.5.5 which was the previous version I was using, does not heal my installation. I'm out of time now - I will try a fresh install + FAR0.9.5.5 instead of downgrading next- 14,073 replies

[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
loknar replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I can't load KSP after updating the latest FAR. The game is stuck while loading Squad/PodCockpitmodel I tried overwriting FAR with the previous FAR I used, then load KSP again, still stuck. Even deleting the while pod folder didn't produce any errors, just stuck. I tried re-installing but it's like whatever I do nothing changes. And my backup of the KSP folder was not made before 21.1. I barely have time to play at all, fixing my installation is taking all my free time this weekend.- 14,073 replies

<shameless plug of mod> I hate mods in every game. But F.A.R aerodynamic consideration mod is essential to me since KSP alpha does not do a good job at all to account for drag and stall. </shameless plug of mod> With FAR: 1) you have to build tall, not wide. The OP's rocket would do great. 2) Remember not to exceed terminal velocity 3) use low AoA (also to avoid wasting fuel) 4) use your instincts.

Lithobraking means braking using fat? edit: oh that would be Lipobraking Litho means stone or rock which makes total sense as a naming convention

Saving, opening a new craft and reloading seems to fix the off-center bug for me. Not sure it is caused by FAR.- 14,073 replies

After watching America's got talent I have an irresistible urge to play KSP.

Thanks regex. Wow Eve is really a challenge/pain. Back to the drawing board. Well, I can use my "Space Van" to transport kerbonauts and eventually in Laythe, I guess.
-
For Eve - I did not try yet - but I think it is essential to install FAR mod, test a very well working space plane design on Kerbal and use that. Turbojet engines insane efficiency seems like the way to go. I finished designing a large stable space plane and that took me much longer than perfecting 2 missions to Duna with 4 large rovers.
-
Many posts about this. But I can spare some time to answer with my 2 cents; For a landing and return flight, Duna is much easier. With eve you need to plan for the extremely dV hungry atmosphere. With Duna your challenge is aerobraking - the thin atmosphere makes it hard. If you don't want to waste time, just use retro burns. I used parachutes and I smashed about 5 times into mountains, very hard to find the sweet spot (I'm using FAR aerodynamics realism mod). Your Duna lander should have 2-3x more fuel than a Lunar lander. (depends what is your strategy) Alot of fuel will be used for braking your descent and parachutes have poor performance on Duna; Use a lander with a low center of gravity (I made that mistake). And finally, beware of sandworms! PS: Moon slingshot is overrated. I'm pretty sure you can benefit more from a heavier planet and transferring from there just above the atmosphere. Plan your maneuver by moving it along the orbit to find the optimal spot. Your goal is not only to escape the planet but intercept another planet by increase/decrease of orbital speed around the star. Correct me if I'm wrong though at the very least it makes it easier to plan a maneuver... As with everything, the timing is essential - waiting for Duna to be at the correct angle - you might have to wait several days so enter an eleptical orbit 121km - 900km so you can fast-forward ref: http://www.skyrender.net/lp/ksp/system_map.png

How did you make those charts? It's a bit weird to see so many flat lines, no? I guess the KSP engine is cheating when making terrain (for performance).. And I don't see why the altitude always go up with inclination...

Never had any issue. Essential mod btw. Thank you so much! Someone somewhere suggested that ambient sounds could be produced when in cockpit view: beeps, fans, etc. That could be nice.

Does a High Level of Stupidity Mean That the Kerbal is Smart?
loknar replied to glugg23's topic in KSP1 Discussion
As a KSP recruiter, stupidity is an essential quality I look for when choosing candidates for distant space station duty with good chance they will be stuck there forever. -

If you are new to FAR like me, it is quite a shock and you have to change your design and piloting behaviour, notably the angle of attack must be low.- 14,073 replies
