[1.12.2] Fix Stock Docking Nodes (7th August 2021)
KerrMü replied to JPLRepo's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
@JPLRepo Hey man, thank you for the quick fix. I installed it 3 days ago and it stopped the drifting, hurray. However, I noticed another small problem since then. Remember the bug that caused docking ports to lock up when an undeployed fairing is present on the vessel? Well, it´s back in my career save. > I can`t undock anything from space stations or the fleet I was just about to send on it´s way to duna when there´s a fairing on the vessel - almost all of them. May I kindly ask if you think this mod could have anything to do with that? It´s the only thing I changed since 1.12.2 and the only other mods I´m running are EVE, Scatterer and WaypointManager. And has anyone any ideas how to fix this? So far I´ve tried to reverse it by testing older save points, removing mods and reinstalling the game, but without success. I´m sorry to bother you with this, but I´m out of ideas. -
Let´s recapitulate: Duna has less atmosphere and less gravity than Kerbin. So you need very little thrust, but a whole lot of surface area to stay aloft. Oh, and the terrain is a little difficult for long take off runs. Let´s keep that in mind, too. Something like this works: I found that if my designs could barely take off on Kerbin than they were probably right for Duna. Oh, and reducing the Prop RPMs a little bit works wonders. Have fun designing and show us your results pls

Oh, flags are great. A simple system of building blocks that allow the creation of more complex shapes. I wonder if the devs could include some that would make the creation of spherical shapes easier. One can dream. I´ll have to test what happens to the sub after uploading and downloading. If the fairings hold their shape and that sort of stuff. If it holds up I´ll edit the link into the original post. Maybe later today. But it´s a bit messy and clippy under the skin. Sometimes my philosophy changes from "build it clever and clean" to "what do I have to do, to make this work?" when it gets late.
-
Yep. the phase when you take 20 ore out of one tank and put 30 in another... Man, you´ve nailed the propotions of that Delta and the bow and stern made from flags? Just wow. If you don´t mind me asking, how many parts does it have? I had one batch of versions that still had wing parts as stern dive planes. When those hit the water hard enough it would launch the crew cabin almost reliably into space.
-
Thoughts when I saw this: 1: wow, that´s cool. 2: Oh god, how many hours? 3: I WANT ONE!!! One weekend and 28 versions later: At one point late in testing and tweaking I forgot to put crew on board, so I wasted an absurd amount of time trying to remedy that. Made a lot harder by those scatterer waves. Not nearly as cool and sophisticated as Yukons Delta, but I´m still pretty happy with it. (And it´s really really quiet ) 16 crew max. Top speed around 22knots. Powered by 6 big fuel cell arrays. I´m thinking about making a nuklear version but it would need 80 RTGs (!) to power the motors alone.
-
Hi At the moment I´ve only got two planes to show for. 1: My humble attempt at a DC-3 and 2: I just built this today. I don´t think it´s finished yet, but my bed is calling and it´s already cool to fly. And parked side by side: Brilliant!

Mars 2020/Perseverance Landing Challenge
KerrMü replied to UomoCapra's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I know, I know, I´m too late for the challenge, but this thing drove me a little bit more insane today, so I hope you don´t mind if I post a few pics anyway. This was a lot harder than I thought. Gratulations to NASA for the succesful landing and everybody who participated. -
After a few weeks without KSP I´m finally back in the game. My graphics card died. This time for good, and yes, it happend while playing KSP. Why do you ask? So I decided to give my PC a few shiny new parts while I´m already on it and what followed was an unpleasant eternity where nothing went to plan. 6 weeks later (!) almost everything is up and running again. Now I can finally test some ideas I had in the meantime. Today I tried to build my favorite helicopter. The look came out better than I expected, but I was absolutely sure that it would fly like a pig. But hey, at least it would look nice and shiny while doing so. So after hours of building I hit the launch button for the first testflight and to my absolute shock and amazement... it flies beautifully. In fact it flew over an hour without SAS on, just with trim and minimal pilot input and then smoothly landed on the roof of the VAB. I´m absolutely stunned! This is still very much a WIP but here are a few pics anyway. I also built another heli and a new shuttle: this time with a working Canadarm and KAL controlled booster thrustcurve/separation (it´s nice when you can concentrate on flying ) and it´s in about every aspect better than any shuttle I ever tried to build. Launch: smooth, roll maneuver: unproblematic, orbital operations: just cool, reentry: very stable, glide slope: absolutely awful. So yeah. It´s a proper shuttle. And I´m on and off tinkering with a little walker. Not bad so far, but there´s still room for improvement. And I can´t for the life of me think of an adequate and cool name.

Kerbin Helicopter Circumnavigation
KerrMü replied to Hotel26's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
First time that happened to me. Hey, congrats to reaching your antipode coordinates. The strange heli platform is a really nice touch. Oh guys, I´ve been staying up to watch the SN8 flight. absoulutely incredible. But now it´s bedtime. More flying tomorrow. Good night/day to you all. -

Leg #2 from Dessert Airfield 6° 31' S, 144° 1' W to the Crater Rim Tracking Station 9° 26' N, 172° 6' W. It was an uneventful but beautiful flight lasting 103 minutes. We´ll be staying here for the night. I wouldn´t want to cross the ocean in the dark and the view is amazing. Btw: The crew consists of Mirke, Elson (pilots), Philemy and Roley (flight engineers) who are smirking all the time. We´re just having a lovely time. Edit: Don´t park on the tracking stations. Bad idea! I just hit m and the heli exploded. Had to F9 for the first time in this endeavor to my first landing spot and suddenly there are trees everywhere. -
Today I decided to participate in the Kerbin Helicopter Circumnavigation challenge. (and to recreate this gem of a gif) It´s gonna be a wild ride

Kerbin Helicopter Circumnavigation
KerrMü replied to Hotel26's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Thanks . Yeah, pretty much spot on. Top stable speed at sea level is around 66m/s. At 5000m its around 80 but on average I tried to keep it around 75. Six km from the Dessert Airfield during the descend the speedometer hit 110 when the heli made a half loop and fell out of the sky. I barely managed to recover and flared out at around 30m above ground... I don´t want to repeat that. EVER! (sry, I just made that gif. couldn´t resist ) You have my utter respect for doing this in a stock bearig helicopter. BRAVO! My bearings were never quite stable enough. Keep it up. -

Cool! Probe core delivered. First leg seen above: Starting point: KSC 0° 2' S, 74° 43' W End: Dessert Airfield 6°31' S, 144° 1' W Duration: 172 minutes. I´m in . Gonna top up the 19% fuel I´ve used so far and carry on later today. (will probably take a little while though) You too mate, you too. Godspeed -
Kerbin Helicopter Circumnavigation
KerrMü replied to Hotel26's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Hi @Hotel26 Great challange. Quick question: Would you consider a flight that was not meant to be a first leg as such? I´ve been toying around with tandem helicopters lately and one design just kept on going and going and at one point I thought, let´s fly to the dessert airfield. climbing up to the mountains - cape dessert - almost there I didn´t think I could participate because with my other helis this would take far too long and I could throw my wrists in the bin afterwards, but at one point during this flight I said to myself "wow, this one could do it." One problem: There is no probe core on this craft, so no coordinates so far, but I think I could clamp one into the cargo bay if you would find that agreeable. -
Finished my little weekend project today: "Try to build a helicopter cockpit that looks ok." Was not meant to be a Huey, but turned out to be one. (UH-1k) After 2 evenings of building (don´t put flags directly on hinges. I´ve never seen the Kraken work so fast. Lost quite a bit of progress there.) today was flying and tweaking time. To my surprise this thing turned out to be pleasantly stable and precise to fly. At least 2 hours of flight time on the clock and I haven´t gotten cramps in my left hand. And you know what? There´s still an hour before bedtime and I think I want to fly it a bit more. I´m really liking this one.

A few weeks ago I had a "little problem" with my PC. Long story short: My career and all craftfiles from 2020 were wiped out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I´m going to wait for the next update before starting a new career game. At the moment I´m just rebuilding my favorite crafts or messing around with useless stuff. Friday (a veeery boring Corona-stay-at-home-friday-evening) I decided that all the orange suits need their own ultimate ride to work. Hours of happily wasted time later: Jeb is the Kerbonaut #1 so he simply HAS to drive a Corvette. Bob as a scientist (biology/geology) needs to go places. -> Landrover Val still owns her old Lada. It´s reliable, cheap to run, she can mend it by herself, she simply loves it. She´s more into jets anyway. Bill and the classic Porsche? You know, good old kerman engineering And now, as I found out how useful flags are to build cars, almost every other car I´ve ever build in this game is obsolete. (sigh) And the other day I built a small helicopter that worked really well exept: it doesn´t float without floats. (duh!) So I added some... and a bit more... and still a bit more... till, a few days later: This was my favorite ship when I was a kid, I think it still is. I always name the first interplanetary exploration ship in any career "Calypso". Pretty soon I´ll have to figure out how to build mini submarines. No idea how that works. At last a beauty shot: Stay safe and play videogames Edit: Small update That was fun , but I think this is enough for road vehicles for a little while. good night/day to you all.

Regarding electric propeller planes for duna: You don´t need much power on your plane. You just need more surface area to transmit that energy to the atmosphere. I made this experiment at least a year ago, but I don´t think things changed that much on the aerodynamics side, so it should still work. So in short: Yes, It´s a viable concept.

Hi In anticipation of the update I started a new career yesterday. Now it was time to set foot on Mun. How did it go? SPLENDID!!! Why would you even ask? Don´t you think Bob is looking embarrassed right now? well, GOOD. HE pressed the wrong button. (And bill is broadcasting his entire knowledge of swearwords to the whole planet) Que rescue music after the dl of 1.10 is completed.

Hi Nate. Glad to hear from you and your quick response makes me think that it´s probably genuine. I obviously can´t speak for everybody here. My distrust that I expressed in the other thread is not at all directed at you and your fellow devs. It´s just that the limited information I got out of that article doesn´t give me a warm, fuzzy feeling in my stomach. plain and simple: I lost trust. But with this ^ you could probably give it back to me and I hope others as well. What I particularly liked about the development of KSP1 was how public it was. We almost always had something to look forward to in the next update and dev diaries delivered more often than not some pictures with that info. Regarding KSP2... well, I´ll wait and see. But, and this is a big but: If the publisher is acting too unethically (we have to be realistic here) for my taste, then I won´t buy your game. Sorry. Greetings to your colleagues. Especially your former ones. I hope they all got new jobs and are well. Cheers, stay safe, Mü P.S.: I´m not playing as long as you are, but when I started there were no wheels and I distinctly remember a launch tower at the pad. Ah, good old simple times...

I´m very sorry to say this, but that´s just what happens again and again when an indie project get´s bought by a big developer. What I particularly liked about KSP was that it was developed by a very open and friendly independant development team. I´ve been sceptical but had high hopes for KSP2. I´m afraid that ship has sailed. There is still a chance that this is going to be an awesome game, it just becomes increasingly less likely. ^ pretty much what I thougt.

Hi MR L A Sorry for the late reply, I`ve been away for the weekend. I couldn´t find any good pictures of it, so I flew a quick mission to bring Bob up into orbit to my new tanker/asteroid miner/supply ship "Kamchatka". Recently I bolted that Dream Chaser-esque thing to a `reuseable´ booster experiment just to practice landing with it. So far I´m really bad at that. Sometimes, just sometimes it works. But I need to figure out how to strengthen the landing legs without adding too much weight or drag. Speaking of drag: The 1st version of the Chaser had only two sparks for propulsion. But at landing approach on the "glide path" the blunt tail caused so much drag that it just fell out of the sky. So I added the two Junos just to extend the descent phase and make the landing more controllable. This thing is the opposite of a glider and even with the Junos not really capable of level flight. The right side of the last pic shows the normal launch configuration with a throwaway booster. Ignore the tower. At some point I wanted to bring landed science data back to a lab in orbit. I´ve forgotten why. Anyway, I hope this is what you asked for. If not, tell me. Have fun, Mü

Hi everybody I´ve been a busy builder today. I´ll come to that in a minute. I took a break for a few months. I had simply run out of ideas completely and my current carreer had gotten tedious with so many upcoming big and complicated missions. Over the holidays I got bored and opened up KSP again and changed my playstyle. More short missions, less headscratching and definitely more goofing around and trying new things. For a Kerbin ground science contract I would normally get my transport plane, put a rover into it and drive and fly around around for 2 hours to get to all the POIs. Now I just built a supersonic scibomber. It get´s to anywhere on Kerbin really quick, drops a few probes out of the back, and that´s it. I love that thing. Sooo much fun to fly. And no more 2 hour long asteroid capture nuke burns for me. This is the new multipurpose Tug. Quite a bit more omph than my old nuke powered potatoroid catcher. Ok, it´s less efficient, but who cares? And I scrapped my overcomplicated upcoming Duna mission. This time I´ll just send a little hab, a rover and a lander. ISRU und all that stuff can come later. The only thing ready for the mission is the crew transport, 0.5g artificial gravity inclusive. Just for the sake of it. Let us slowly come to what i´ve been up to this weekend, shall we? Last week I stumbled upon a monolith on Mun and sent something completely unnecessary over there: Then a thought came to my mind: "Heywood Kerman should take a look at that monolith." But how to get Heywood into Orbit??? Well, from time to time I try to build something like the Orion 3 spaceclipper from 2001. I just love the design and it´s normally a fun challenge to build. So this weekend -again- I sat down with a simple plan. But ideas emerged, problems appeared, sollutions were found, frustrating bugs were... seriously, I thought the thing with engine plates and structural rings not shielding their innerts from drag would have been solved by now... but at the end I´m really happy with the result. I think it looks kinda nice and the flight characteristics are not bad at all. Ok, I had to clip some rapiers together, which I wouldn´t normally do, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ In the end I´m having fun with KSP again and it feels good to be back. Have fun guys and gals, have fun, cya

Looks like an emotional day in KSP today with the announcement of KSP 2. By coincidence I had quite an emotional moment myself today. I wanted to build this, fly this and do this for a very long time:

...... gobsmacked...................can´t process..HOLY something. Seeing an orion drive and a fusion drive, they can´t possibly leave out the radiation aspect, can they? Anyways, absolutely cool trailer. And I am relieved to read that KSP 1 will be developed further. And I belive you guys. After all you are making my most favorite videogame of all time. Hope everybody keeps their job or falls up the ladder at some point. @ star theory games: Good luck, this is a hard community to please.

The book I read was in german, and I can´t find it at the moment, so that´s useless. Just start with the wikipedia article "rocket engine nozzle". That´s pretty good and in the external links there is a NASA pdf "NASA Space Vehicle Design Criteria, Liquid Rocket Engine Nozzles" that goes in much... much, much more detail. Maybe some of the other fine folks here on this forum would be able to provide more literature? Edit: Ok, Mr Manley made a video about this. I missed that one. Thx for posting @Loskene
