Does that include for those who bought before the date but transferred to steam after? Steam says I just have normal retail.

I think in an ideal world, they would still have data on when you purchased the game; perhaps you can go to your KSP store account and see that initial purchase and its date, regardless of migration to steam.

That isn't going to happen though as it would just be stupid for squad to do.

It's what happened to asteroid day; having asteroid day installed in some versions of the game before they fixed it caused it to break your saves, until they updated it.

    Sounds like fun.

I bought the game prior to April 2013. Any way I can still pay for the expansion?

buy it as a gift for someone?

I tend to put "mission" in the context of career play... so it's just a "scenario" editor?

We don't know for sure, that's largely speculation on my part. If it was career mode stuff, they would've come out and said "contract"
the refrain from using that term makes me believe it is something else, and an overhaul of the main menu scenario thing is the only thing I could apply what they said to sensibly in my world of speculations

Looks like I'd put the following 2 things in the "should be stock, as well as the DLC" category:

    1. The Mission Builder, since this is a critical error in the extant career system. Space programs design missions, in extant KSP, space programs take contracts. This reboot of the career system is clearly needed in stock, IMO.

    2. All rocket parts that overlap with stock right now. If the tanks get a reboot to look decent, and decouplers, engines, etc, then stock needs this, since fixing the rocket parts has been promised for a while.

To the extent the DLC and base game are compatible seems to make sense anyway, as DLC adds to the base game, which continues updates, so the base game will be compatible, anyway. I'd think that aside from specifically hooking stuff to features of the DLC, any mod should be able to work with or without the DLC installed, for example. It would be a major headache for modders to have to support divergent versions.

I don't think the mission builder is a career mode thing.
I think it's a revamp of the stock Scenarios in the main menu, to create your own to share with people and challenge them to. Otherwise, they're competing against contract configurator.

I would disagree with the idea that the 3.75m diameter needs a command pod and similar parts. While they would certainly be nice, they don't currently make sense to include considering the fact that the existing stock parts are heavily influenced by American space exploration technology, and so far there isn't an American command pod larger than the Apollo one. An Orion-like expansion might be interesting though, and would fit in well with the 3.75m size class.

Yeah, it's all roughly based on american stuff, but SLS hasn't flown either and that's what the 3.75 meter parts are based on. An outdated version of SLS, at that. As a size class, it leaves a lot to be desired in terms of what it has compared to 2.5 and 1.25, which is what I was largely getting at.

  7. 1 minute ago, eloquentJane said:

It wouldn't surprise me if they do exactly that. It seems to be the obvious logical choice.

Suppose they also expand to a larger size though. Would they go for the 5m size that most mods tend to use (2x2.5m) or the 5.625m size (3x1.875m) that I've seen a couple of times? I wouldn't assume that they would include larger part diameters, but it would certainly make sense if they want players to be able to build better-looking Saturn V rockets which are scaled to fit the existing 2.5m Apollo tech.

Something else I'd definitely be interested in is a Soviet-style parts expansion. Such a large number of parts would definitely be worthy of DLC, and hopefully they'd condense the engines into a single part so that rockets like the N1 don't end up being hundreds of parts at launch.

I personally don't want to see them adding a new size class, when the current ones are so drastically lacking. 3.5m has barely anything aside from fuel tanks, engines, an adapter, and a decoupler. Command pod, service bay, etc would be nice before focusing on another size

so.... I am confused... with 1.3 be a pay to get update or is this a separate expansion pack that is pay to get? (I can live with the second option :P, not very interested in the expansion pack to begin with.

1.3 is a normal update that adds localisation, bugfixes, and the ability to adjust both ends of struts and fuel lines

    this is its own thing

Okay so here's a few things we know, and the obvious conclusion to draw from them:

    • There are going to be historic parts
    • Kerbals will get personal parachutes
    • There is one significant part of the American space program between Apollo and Mercury that the stock game does not mimic so far

    Conclusion: we're getting Gemini parts.

that would be nice, but wouldn't they be too big for 1.25 and too small for 2.5 size spacecraft? Unless they're adding a whole new 1.875m size class like what like 5 other mods do, like MOLE and HGR and i forget which others

So, it's contract configurator with a UI?

    With this:

    And the soviet parts pack?

I would say that given the lengths they went to not to use the word contract, and some of the other things they mentioned, that this seems more likely to be something that adds in more of a 'scenario editor" like what rollercoaster tycoon has, and a way to share scenarios you make, and as such would build itself into the existing Scenario option in the main menu.

    [SPECULATION]

  11. I myself am hoping they take some lessons from the Paradox model, especially with regards to cities skylines.

CS After Dark added the day night cycle into the base game for free, but offered a way to pay to enrich it with night life and taxis and such

By asteroid redirect mod do you mean Custom Asteroids or is there an actual mod called Asteroid Redirect because after googling it I can't find anything on Asteroid Redirect

Pretty sure they mean the Asteroid Day mod, the one they partnered with the B612 foundation to release.

It won't do that in 1.3 - it needed to have sensible English before we could translate it to something else.

    Localisation sunk its roots everywhere.
You guys think it's no big deal, but it takes a lot of work under the hood to take a game that was coded entirely in english and rework it to display and function in other languages.
It's not just making sure text displays right in other languages, it's making sure special characters in other languages, or right-to-left writing, or funny context rules and grammar rules about word length in some contexts don't cause the game to nuke itself. I linked this before, and I'll link (but not embed) it again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0j74jcxSunY

As a result, text/UI/contracts lots more stuff have been overhauled, so there will be benefits to english speakers as well as those in other countries who own the game, or are interested in buying the game; they may now feel more sure of playing/buying it.

A previous example I almost used was "trying to watch anime without subs or dubs if you don't speak japanese" but in this case the subs/dubs can literally risk breaking the game.

Stuff like this could happen, for example. I mean, game crashes as opposed to system crashes, and in places other than message notifications.

Badie - please could I have a quick sanity check on the contest?

"Satire: A genre of literature, and sometimes graphic and performing arts, in which vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, corporations, government, or society itself into improvement."

Do you really want satire? It doesn't really seem to fit the spirit of the game or these forums somehow, although perhaps that's just me. We don't really have much to satirise either for that matter but I guess folks will find something.

    Thanks.

I think they want silly and whimsical stories of the kerbalverse, perhaps parodying real-world space history and news.

    This is really great!

A great barrier for new players that aren't native english speakers is the language. With this more players will be able to play and more importantly LEARN about many things from the "rocket science" world (more like explosions world tbh) and although people were expecting more on this announcement please take note that localization is a really huge effort. It's almost writing the game from the beginning. Each hard-coded string had to be re-coded and the texts appearing on the menus and etc.

This will only improve the game from now on, and SQUAD can focus on squashing bugs and implementing features from now on.

And from me, a self-taught english speaker, I say thanks SQUAD, we know this wasn't easy, but have to be done :)

    ~Renan

Exactly! The scope of what is honestly, a long overdue feature for any game that vies for a global release can be lost on people who already know english, whether born in an english speaking country, one that teaches it in school, or self-teaching. It probably took all hands at times to get these things working, and now that those hands aren't poring over keyboard layouts or the intricacies of language and how it affects software and text display we can see some serious bugsquashing. Even during this, there were reports of bugfixing; they fixed the runway, which is great!

Kerbal is a released, post 1.0 game, and it released without support for other languages. Physics glitches and so on can stuff it, we live in a global world where I can be friends with people from the netherlands, russia, and other such places. As such, language support and localisation are really important for a game that SQUAD want to see played all over this blue marble of ours.

Resisting the urge to make snide remarks about announcing super-secret things we all already knew about and actually getting a little bit interested in the contest. Question:

...it's not really clear from the wording of that part--is the Kerbal in the figure the customized version (and the image is just an example), or will they all be generic male Kerbals with just a custom flag and name?

I think that's just a template of what you can expect, except the one for the winner will be personalized to look like whatever you like

They mention the localisation first, which would be the main feature of the announcement, then how many lines of code, which is alot, THEN mention the pre-release. Then a whole lot on the contest. I feel like the announcement was for the localisation and the contest more then the pre-release, which had a total of two sentences about it.

I figure they're proud to say that it's practically complete now, because that had to be a massive undertaking for all involved.

  17. Just now, Jivaii said:

While true, we already knew they were working it and getting close to being done. They'd hyped it up before, so doing a re-hype makes it feel....less. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad for the localisation, but I honestly thought that there'd be something other then that when they said "BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!"

Well, a contest and a pre-release date seem like fairly decent sized announcements as well, even if the main feature in said pre-release appears to be localisation. We'll have to see if more comes out between now and the 16th.

    Really?

I feel like the only complaints so far are from english speakers who don't realize the scope involved when you figure there are approximately 180 other countries out there, and that not all of them speak and learn fluent english.

You guys treat it as a trivial feature, but have you personally tried to learn more russian than enough to swear ironically in counter-strike?
Or more chinese than they use in a firefly episode? Or more spanish than when you watched dora the explorer?

Think of the reverse; the game is complicated enough without a language barrier, and a lot of nuance for the game's theme is lost.

Localisation really is a Big Deal™, even if you're not one of the people who might immediately appreciate it. Don't knock them for treating it like one, just because it's not another planet or feature on the scale of commnet and other such things.
