  1. Exactly, all these navigation systems are meant to provide an alternative if GPS is blocked or otherwise unavailable. Besides, it is always good to have alternatives for critical technology and systems.
  2. ISRO will launch the IRNSS-1C ( Independent Regional Navigation Satellite System ) on October 16th at 1.56 ( IST ). the Launch Vehicle is the PSLV in its 'XL' configuration ( the same one used for the MOM ). the IRNSS is a program to create an Indian GPS. it will consist of 7 satellites and is intended for regional navigation purposes. IRNSS-1C is the third satellite of this program. the Brochure and related images can be downloaded from the ISRO site
  3. I have a feeling that this picture is going to become iconic, it is by far the best picture of Mars I have seen. Go ISRO !!!
  4. Follow MOM on twitter, someone at ISRO has a great sense of humor
  5. Taken using the Mars Color Camera from an altitude of 8449 km, this image has a spatial resolution of 439 m and is centered around Lat: 20.01N, Lon:31.54E
  6. And they finally released a photo !! Taken from a height of 7300 km; with 376 m spatial resolution.
  7. The first photos will be released in a few hours, before that, I would like to thank everyone here at KSP forums, ( especially Kryten ) you guys are an amazing bunch of people who care about Space Exploration and Science. When I joined the Forums last year and started this Thread, I was worried about people commenting on poverty and how we shouldn't be involved in Space exploration; You guys have proved me wrong ! Thank you !! I hope that this attitude will continue for as long as we all play KSP
  8. The Prime Minister of India Narendran Modi while congratulating ISRO ( he was at the Center ) invoked a beautiful poem by Rabindranath Tagore... Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high Where knowledge is free Where the world has not been broken up into fragments By narrow domestic walls Where words come out from the depth of truth Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit Where the mind is led forward by thee Into ever-widening thought and action Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
  9. Burn should be over and rotation should be complete by now....
  10. Telemetry will lost from 7.34 IST to 8.00 IST as MOM will be on the far side.
  11. Confirmation of start of burn in 2 minutes ( delay is 12 minutes )
  12. spacecraft orientation and burn is about to begin !!!
  13. Oops ! sorry about that thanks for the correction !
  14. the Indian probe had a flag on the sides too, but they sent it in gray scale But since it was the Moon 'Impact' Probe, I doubt it survived
  15. We are so close to being the first program to get to mars on the first attempt !
  16. I love trains, I used to play Open TTD and I would spend hours just designing routes, stations and signals ! such fun ! as an middle class Indian, most of my travels are through the Indian Railways, infact I take the local metro everyday to work, its fun standing near the doors and having the wind on face ! ( most Indian trains don't have air-conditioning and the doors don't close between stations, so you free to stick your head out if you want ! )
  17. that's probably because the Indian space program is self-sufficient; ISRO earns money by launching satellites for other nations. As for the UK's space program, I personally admire the level of co-operation Europeans have. If only China and India could work together......
  18. A short video from the ISRO site showing the insertion plan. http://www.isro.org/mars/moi-video.aspx
  19. I dont like it because it failed to do what it promised ie. lower costs for each Kilo and provide faster turnarounds. that being said, I think the Shuttle is one the most beautiful spacecraft ever made.
