If they tried it at night they wouldn't be able to see where they were going. Q: Where does a candle-flame go when you blow it out? A: Nowhere. It's still there but you can't see it, because it's dark.

Raster Prop Monitor. Treat yourself. Plus several other mods support it (MJ, NavTools, Vessel Viewer, SCANSat, Docking Alignment, etc ...) so all their instrumentation/display windows appear on the IVA MFDs. It's cool ;-)

In theory, yes, but you still face the 'wobbly rocket' proplem with pushing. Using a pull arrangement means the asteroid/payload will always fall into line behind you neatly.
-
Oh, in that case I will have to watch the market. If they're co-operating on standards, that's a whole new game.

BIG difference: VR = I look right, I see right. TrackIR (or similar) = I look right, I can't see the sodding screen any more!

Getting an orbit over a particular site
Pecan replied to ibanix's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Here's a simple answer - if the "point" is on the equator or at the poles it's easy. Otherwise, it's geostationary. If equator, just go around and around. If poles, go over and over. Otherwise ... Your orbital period (time it takes for an orbit) has to match the body's 'day'. If you don't need it to pass over every orbit then you can get closer to the body, therefore orbiting faster, and pass over the point every second, third, or whatever orbit. This, geosynchronous rather than geostationary orbital period, is important because in KSP there are several bodies where you can't get a geostationary period within the body's SOI (and therefore just can't within the game physics). -
My first reaction was, "yeah they're both good", but then betamax was better than VHS in a most ways. More recently, ebooks only went one or two ways. Point remains - there's going to be a standards war, you might have a lot of fun before you find out you backed the wrong one, but whatever you do it'll cost a lot of money to join in. [Personally, I'll wait until there's a clear choice under £100. Look at Google cardboard or any of the 'phone-based visors] To be more clear - your program should work on AMD or nVidia; your VR program won't work on competing VR systems
-
I think it'd be incredible if the majority of people rush to spend £600 on their favourite version of VR while it's still so new. Don't buy betamax!

We need Rotating Docking Ports in stock.
Pecan replied to Xyphos's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
There are mods for ports that rotate and for gendered ones that enforce alignment. -
Congratulations. It never gets old to hear about someone's first landing either, as we all recall our own excitement*. Docking, I first hated then came to love; it's just so serene and looks cool. Tip for anyone who hasn't done it yet - Minmus is easier than Mun. [ETA: Just thought, this is probably one of the things that makes KSP special - can you think of another game where someone says something like "I've just completed the second level ..." and the old-timers cheer!?]

Is there a mod that you couldn't live without?

You are probably thinking of KAS/KIS -
Cheaper than free?!

Store-only here, I didn't like (but didn't hate) Steam at the time. My issue with them was simply the startup time getting Steam to see I wasn't online before I could even begin to load the game itself. Recent convert - new machine, new regime, etc. I'd have liked 1.1 so I could have got started on manuals for the feel of the thing but I'm not sweating it on the expectation that a lot will still change (and Squad don't want anyone to write manuals so have refused permission to use screenshots which means I have to replicate them anyway). Lots of different gripes and issues in this thread surprise me though: Contract - my early-access purchase included the contract to provide new updates until release (which was 1.0). I've had a couple since then and they're still giving it to me for no more charge. Hail Squad! Pre-release - it was made very clear in all the announcements that this wasn't the finished release so if you're starting a new save in it you've only got yourself to blame. Pre-Steam - If you bought it before it was available on Steam you had the option to get a free Steam key. Lucky you; with my new regime I'd like Steam to stop offering it to me and recognise I already have it! (It's in my library as 'non-Steam game' but it still suggests it). Anyway - how do I feel? A bit cheap, actually, since I've only ever paid $15 for this and had better value from it than anything except Second Life (which is free and I made money from). If anything, this has nudged me towards buying it again, on Steam.

:-) We have consensus :-)

And to be fair to Xyphos, there's also nothing wrong with not using them. My comment was just pointing out that drop-tanks have been around for a long time so the abstraction is also valid. It's one of those mechanics like autopilots or clipping that people will never agree about, it's individual (or challenge) choice, as you point out. All models are wrong, but some are useful (Box).

Answer 1: "How can I get this 142.8 ton ..." = with a 143tonne+ launch vehicle. (As others have said, the mass is the important thing for a launch vehicle, but the critical thing is to get the aerodynamics right). Answer 2: "How can I get this 142.8 ton ..." = looks like a right pig. If you don't like Foxster's answer please let us have the .craft file and I'll see what I can do.

put more parts into 1.0 demo
Pecan replied to Kerbiter's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
You do know that 1.1 is coming "soon", don't you? Not that it matters to your purchase (thanks Squad!) but it does mean you might not want to take a 1.0 save quite so far. -
Mods which add parts and textures and therefore all the 3d structure and graphics images detail are usually the ones that need most memory. Those with sound files/effects can be pretty needy too, so Chatterer is suspect. In contrast procedural/information mods like Hyperedit don't have much demand except for a bit of processing power at specific times. That can cause laggy performance but won't crash out of memory.

Is there a mod that you couldn't live without?
Pecan replied to Foxster's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
After 5 pages the rankings are roughly (it's difficult to know if some people meant they would quit playing KSP completely, rather than not enjoy it so much): KAC KER MJ KJR FAR (and, of course, one row about what "pre-release" means. Ah well, my last row was with people who couldn't understand the difference between insufficiency and absence) With the reservation in the first line, a top-ten might even be possible from this. I'm off to curse, etc. to check how the top downloads match-up with self-selected statements -
Always worth showing again ;-) Prehaps that's why NASA didn't go with "all the pumps in the world couldn't squeeze fuel through a garden hose fast enough to keep the engine(s) running", as you said before, and fuelled the Shuttle's engines from the great, big, external and unpowered orange tank. Still, whatever rules you want to apply are fine.

Help With Lander on Ike
Pecan replied to keyscapeunit's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
ooh, I've missed that one. Have to give it a try - thanks for the tip -
I assume you haven't ever seen the stuff the KER and VOID can display in thier HUDs. Not that it matters, personal preference is personal.

KER and VOID do HUD. Yes, MJ has all the customisable windows but sometimes ... no window at all is better. MJ has no heat readouts. There are more differences, but it would be tedious to list them all. And for those who say they enjoy doing the dV calculations by hand ... I'm as big a fan of understanding the maths behind it all as the next man (unless it's slashy) but are you also calculating all the figures and other information these mods show you while you fly? Biome, heading to target, etc. etc. Dynamic navigation stuff that even the simplest boat (let alone 'plane) has?
