  1. I think this idea is cool because we are all sitting here sort of going "ok well this thing works, it's cool for nerds, but how can it be implemented?" I saw Micecraft in-game CPU videos on YouTube, built via their in-game "redstone" resource. Here's one I saw some other videos where someone was saying they had built (or were going to build) a compiler and such, so that leads me to believe that with proper hardware and HID interfaces, you could really build an ingame computer with an OS on a Hard Drive, output a Video display, and even use input like mouse/keyboard (kermouse/kerboard?) After all, NASA used a computer that was less-powerful than a calculator to land men on the moon and return them home, correct? As an enthusiast with limited knowledge or research on the subject, how much "piloting" did the astronauts have to do? If this is the case... I wonder... If someone could expand on the RemoteTech mod and build like a JPL-style mission control and use the signals to shoot to rovers and auto-drive them? Such as with some sort of AI (detect incline, speed, gravity, etc and realize a best-path with least resistance, etc?) Once we get more robust resources, more finalized landscapes with items such as collidable (movable, destroyable?) rocks or cliffs to fall off/climb.. Hopefully at some point we get gysers and/or volcanoes? Maybe even detect biological substances, sort of mirror the way-awesome missions that RL has going on and planned? I think it would be awesome too if someone could build a KOS (instead of DOS) and even maybe a KCP/IP protocol and build an in-game internet? Can a mod tell KSP to contact HTTP servers via real internet? Would be neat if there were scripts, batch files, etc... Commands we could talk to each other with... I'm just not someone who can make any of this.

Do you have any idea how severe the damage can be if it collides with us? ROZER: I understand this. But without AMU we can't continue our mission. NED: No, we can't. But we h]ave enough fuel to execute transfer burn to Duna and wait for cargo from home. Or abort to Kerbin. ROZER: Aborting the mission is out of the question. IMV “Proteus†is fully operational, all we need is more fuel – not on Duna's orbit but later, while exploring joolian moons.   3. Hmm, I might try that for the main ITVs. The Odyssey Hab module is a little wide. My current heatshield is fairly wide, but the wheels poke just barely outside it. Talk about burned rubber! I'll DL it and check it out to compare things.
  4. Ha, this is funny. I like this mod and I just wanted to propose myself to build a model for it and give some suggestions. Now that's a good looking model and I wouldn't change it. I don't think specular/bump maps are necessary cause the actual model is quite obscure and there's a rare occasion someone will check them out from out close. Most of the KSP models are diffuse only too, so no need to put in more detail. I am making an additional airports mod myself and would love to feature PAPI and full set of working airport lights. I tried making just an emissive object on top of the lights, but it fails cause when you look at them from the distance and the model is less then a screen pixel big it's invisible, so you either need to build it giant, or find a way to build 2d sprites, which I am going to talk about right now I worked on modding racing games before and the best method for making headlights is to have 2 objects. One is the actually lit light object, emissive texture shaped as the light cover model and then put in front of the turned off light. The object would appear when it's on, and disappear when off. The other object is the "glare", a 2d sprite that is drawn on top and always points the camera. In the game there also was a way for the sprite to change size according to direction, so if you are looking directly into the light the sprite is big, if you move to the side the sprite shrinks until it disappears when looking more than 180 deg. This is how it looks on my mod: So, I would like to suggest if it is possible to, instead of a giant sphere, use a 2d sprite//billboard that would always be the same size on screen, no matter the distance, in this way, you can guarantee it would be seen from far away, but would not be a nuisance for up close. A similar method is used in the Microsoft Flight Simulator I can send you the flare textures, I have plenty of them.
  5. Agreed. Future space industries will have to find something to DO with anything they mine and manufacture. Find a asteroid of diamonds? Get to back to Earth and you just made diamonds worthless and you are broke. They will need to find a service or product that either people will WANT or will help them develop their space programs. Gold? Well, good for circuits that could be produced in space to help make robotics and CPUs and equipment needed in space. Water at the southern polar regions of the Moon? Good for a science center and maybe test low-gravity farming. I think the big money maker will be tourism. Who will pay to get into space? Scientists, tourists, cults, explorers, get-rich-quick con artists - why not? That is how the New World was discovered (from the European point of view anyway). Businesses will have to generate a demand for going into space. Talk about asteroid mining is nice...but all on paper now. He3? Maybe in another century when we can produce enough on Earth to even test how fusion works on a grand scale. Solar power beamed from orbital stations? Decade old dreams. So let us focus on the services and those people who are willing to give money for a dream of going to the Moon or Mars. Okay, a reality television show seems weird but it is one way to help collect some of the money. SOME. Heavy industry and stuff like that will come later. I am not saying it will not happen. I am a fan of the movies 'Moon Zero Two' and 'Outland' - even have the novels that were based on the movies. But it will be a slow, century long process, in which our great grand-children may join in. But mostly likely they will just watch the ships take off over the...whatever they use as the internet-news channels in that time period....when not inputting the numbers at their work-pod during their half-hour break working for 'The Machine'.

There's too much nonsense in this thread to refute post-by-post so I'm going to post a write-up aimed generally at everyone in this thread: - Virgin Galactic has claimed that the first customer flight is 18 months away for about 6 years now. They have yet to fly anyone but two test pilots to space and back and there is no indication of that changing any time soon, let alone them "taking over space exploration" in place of NASA or anyone else. They're going to offer short suborbital flights for a few rich people, nothing more. - SpaceX has ambitious goals (that are far into the future, if they ever come to fruition). So far they have successfully flown 6 rockets with payloads to orbit in the space of 5 years. This is not exactly the mindshattering accomplishment of epic proportions that people make it out to be. Elon Musk may talk a big game but SpaceX has yet to come close to Mars, let alone their competitors in their bread-and-butter operations. - NASA isn't dead, hasn't given up. The pace of development is dictated and constrained by a number of factors, the most important of them being that this isn't the Apollo era with massive budgets and a national focus on NASA and what it is doing for the nation. Orion is looking good, as is SLS, and they will fly next year and in 2017/8 respectively. Mars is still two plus decades away, an asteroid mission may come in the early 2020's on EM-3 or 4. There's not going to be a mission to the Moon's surfacein the next decade, where are you people getting this from? There is no work on a lander (except for small trade and concept studies) or mission ops for the Moon's surface. You need a new piece of hardware to land on the Moon, which there is currently no money for. When there is money for it, and it gets spent, it will still take many years before any metal is welded, let alone the lander flying somewhere on a mission. - Roskosmos are working with the comatose Russian space industry in developing new spacecraft and launch vehicles to take Russia to the Moon and beyond with hardware that wasn't invented when Kruschev was still around. Russia plans to go the Moon and I believe they are serious about it, based on what I've read and conversations with Russians who have an insight into their space industry. - China is slowly but surely advancing their space program. Later this year they will perform the first soft landing on the Moon and operate the first spacecraft on the surface of the Moon since the 70s. Beyond that is a bigger space station, more Moon and Mars missions and eventually a moon landing. It may take decades but they will surely beat both Russia and NASA on a return there, unless there's a drastic change in the coming years. - A flag and footprints mission to the Moon by NASA is utterly pointless. They've already done it, and the only sensible reason to return would be for proper science, which nobody is interested in. Not the politicians, not NASA, not the public at large. - In-situ resource utilisation (ISRU) tech has yet to be proven anywhere else but on Earth. To suggest that asteroid mining will save the day and bring in billions of dollars is laughable, because of the neglible or even negative return on investment. It is infinitely cheaper to start a new platinum mine on Earth than it would be to design and build spacecraft, send them to an asteroid, set up a mining operation and then somehow get platinum (or whatever else) back to the Earth's surface. The same applies to prop depots because NASA and US lawmakers are more interested in ultra-large pork rockets that sustain the existing workforce than changing the paradigm of space exploration. Even a water depot is questionable, seeing as it would probably take a decade or more and several or tens of billions of dollars to get the first water tank ready for its first use, and then they'd have to sell the water for under $10,000 per kg. It is therefore highly unlikely that private asteroid mining operations will commence in the decade to come. Reusable launch vehicles and/or prop depots sent up from Earth make more sense but even then they aren't completely necessary. - Space based manufacturing is a joke. It's not been done even on a microscopic scale and there's nobody working on it. It won't happen in a very long time, if ever. Do you have any idea how complicated it is to build a spacecraft on Earth, and you propose we do it in space with resources that have been taken from asteroids which also hasn't happened yet (outside of a few kilograms). I urge you all to read up on these subjects from more in-depth sources than Wikipedia before you post.
  8. 'Fine' to you is a high frequency of crashes when using map sat parts? I've heard the talk about removing mods to free memory but, just no! I do not feel it is justified to give up the large variety of parts I have to allow me to use a single part.

I feel like planet appearance could still be improved by adapting the specular/bump-map (assuming that is bump-map) Ps.: The mun already has a very good planet texture imo. If we talk about textures in need of HD, Minmus ground-tile textures..... and Mun ground-tile textures.   10. Chapter 3 Almost a year later Harv sits at home watching the 10:00 PM news Commercial: ".. And if you call in the next ten minutes, you get two for the price of-" Harv's wife Jennifer walks into the room. Jennifer: "Don't stay up too late, Harv. We have to catch that plane at 8:00 AM sharp." She walks over and kisses him. Harv: "I'm just gonna watch the news and come right to bed." Jen smiles. Jennifer: "I'm going to get cold if you fall asleep on that couch." A few minutes later, Harv walks into Jennifer in tears,sitting on the bed. He goes sit next to her. Harv: "Honey, what's wrong?.." Jennifer: "I..I've just been thinking lately." Harv: "What's on your mind?" Jennifer: "Just...." Jennifer looks at Harv, her tears shining from the light by their bed. Jennifer: "W..What if you don't make it back?" Harv hugs her. She cries over his shoulder. Jennifer: "It's not like the missions to the Mun or Minmus... They could atleast rescue you.. but nobody has ever seen past that." Harv: "Jennifer, I'm going to make it back. I'm going to hug you and kiss you so much and you know that. Being away from you for so long is enough, but you being in fear of me not getting back is worse." Harv thought to himself.. Is it really safe? The next morning Harv and Jenny arrive at the airport. After doing their bag checks and other things, they go sit down waiting for their flight to start boarding. On the news, the reporters talk about the now announced mission to Dres. A picture of the crew goes on-screen and a few seconds later everybody is staring Harv down like he's a celebrity. Intercom: "Flight 354 now boarding." The two board. They have first class seats. Jennifer: "Oooh, dinner with the president.. I'm so excited!" Harv: "I'm glad you are feeling better today." They smile. Captain: "Good morning, my name is Captain Reaves. We're expected to have a nice flight today... little to no clouds, low winds. Please strap in for take-off. If you look to your front you will see one of your flight attendants showing you the proper way to buckle your seat belt." The plane takes off, and soon reaches cruising altitude. While a flight attendant offers Jennifer some wine, Harv falls asleep.
  11. *thinks about it* *head hurts* Many immediate thoughts: The main problem is that gravity is a pathetic, and I mean pathetic, and I mean, pathetic force. As evident by the fact that you awesome, glistering and electrochemically driven muscles have no problem fighting a planet's mass worth of one. And the universe is huge, way beyond such a topology begins to matter. As in very huge. Huger than you think. In fact, by reading this sentence you probably thought of something huge so I'd like to stop you and tell you are wrong. It's even huger than that. Such a gravity effect would be way, way, way smaller than being affected by the gravity of a paperclip in alpha centauri. Or a dandelion in andromeda, all of which are relatively "close by" compared to the distances you describe. Now. Were the universe infinite in detail, I suppose you could have infinitely small effects, however another problem is that the universe isn't. There is a "distance", under which details smaller than it are "meaningless" called plank length or so the even science-industrial complex says. Things now get super complicated regarding quantum gravity but, intuitively talking, I am rather sure that at some point any such "space curvature" or whatever you describe gravity in, at so far a distance, would need to be described in detal smaller than a plank lenght's worth. And so become "meaningless". It would be like trying to talk about an energy state lower than vaccum energy (which is also defined by the plank constant). Plank lenght, is basically like a hard coded limit where the simulation's detail ends Another problem is that there is a difference between the observable universe, and the "universe". The observable universe is only the one which light speed interactions had a time to reach us (and in turn ours effect it), but I am rather sure that the universe is assumed to be much larger than that and because of space's expansion, parts of it will never become observable because light cannot catch up from point A to point B, due to all that expanding space inbetween. Since I am also rather sure than gravitational effects propagate at the speed of light (otherwise merely waving a rock around, would mean FTL communication with a sensitive enough detector somewhere else), this mean's sun's gravity hasn't had the time to reach the "edge" of the universe in order to "loop around", neither it ever will.   12. Seems like something timeless to talk about to me, I didn't even notice. I'm on windows eight, i7 core, 8gb ram, Geforce GT 640M. Got it to use autocad without stutter, and it does a great job of running KSP.

I started playing KSP in May and to that point most of my exposure to space concepts and programs was from reading science fiction (oh and 15 years ago, I saw Jim Lovell give a talk at my college.) Because of KSP, over the last couple months I've read several books on the space program, watched documentaries, perused countless Wikipedia articles, become a daily visitor to Space.com, started playing Orbiter, stood outside with my 6 year old daughter finding constellations and watching the ISS fly overhead: in short dived in with my usual enthusiasm for subjects I'm interested in, but know little about. Aside from the huge amount of enjoyment I've gotten from playing this game, its ability to stimulate curiosity and teach without seeming to are phenomenal achievements. And the ISS; what an amazing human achievement. Here's a great video tour of the habitable areas. (I've watched the whole thing twice: my 6 y/o watched it with me once and was fascinated the whole time.)
  14. Actually, I was about to plunge for an Oculus dev kit (extra cash + I wanna test it/dev for it), but when I thought about KSP, I realized a few things: - the VAB/SPH would not work. How do you build a rocket when the parts list is on the (distorted) side? Also, the resolution is halved horizontally and the GUI is made for a horizontal screen. - in the same spirit, flying a rocket in external view. Sure, it'd be 3D and less info, but head movements would be weird, given the focus point on the ship. Let's not even talk about clicking on a mod window . - however, with all those issues: IVA would be improved tenfold with a Rift, for sure. That's the one camera set in a point, and rotating on it instead of around it. What could be done: for external views/VAB/SPH, change from "point of reference" to "turn your head with the center view being the ship". Like a virtual screen displayed in a black room, at 1m from you. Not pretty or amazing, but it'll avoid putting the Rift off and on. edit: of course, that's a lot of extra work for a few people (since the Rift is not *really* out yet). I'm all for it, and it'll be needed down the line (HarvesteR is a TrackIR fan, so I'm not worried about future implementation), but right now, it's a small nice-to-have compared to other features.

Whether or not we agree with the general notion is an entirely different topic. All valid points, and if HarvesteR is sincere then that's pretty much it for extra-Kerbol systems as there's no real world tech - real or theorised that'll get us to another star in a meaningful timeframe. I know people might talk about fusion engines or anti-matter drives but they suffer from the same energy problems as the solar sail (i.e. massive energy requirements and nuclear levels of excess heat). Similarly, I know a lot of people are suggesting a higher time warp setting, but I maintain that a Space Program mature enough to build an intersteller ship, even one that only manages 1% the speed of light, can't simply be parked for decades for the sake of that one mission. I also maintain that any sublight drive capable of this kind of speed just breaks the in-system side of the game.
  18. Great suggestion! Can you talk some more about how to "Very quickly switch to the second vessel"? The only way I've been able to switch vessels is to go back to KSP and choose the space tracking and then switch vessels there.
  19. well, sorry for asking this another time then! i should have found those thread Anyway, that's what i though about the alt+f4, but i though it wouldnt work since it may had time to autosave , wich replaced the old persistence file and that is why there is no back up, and i do make backup, just not every single time i played, so i just asked this, in case it would have saved me work for nothing, the quickload was a silly error because i was not paying enough attention, so dont need to be rude, well all do mistake here and there The way the save work are not so bad, but still like the idea of Mr Shifty, for some ppl making the mistake you talk about Johnno (and it would have saved me too) it will prevent from doing this action Well thx for the rapid respond though and you still told what i asked for, thx!

  21. I don't mind most of the sound effects in game. Some of the engines are ridiculously loud compared to others though. When I was streaming the other night I had to change the volume down and up a few times because people were complaining they couldn't hear me talk. I get sound bugs fairly often too. During multiple missions to Mun I noticed how my engines make a burn sound, the fade to nothing, repeat over and over every 10-20 seconds or so. Or sometimes I get that crackling/popping sound bug.
  22. Yep, tried it with everything. The problem that I faced that I could not overcome was the speed at which the game itself can follow a kerbal. The camera would track the elevator to a certain height and then stop. I then went and used the lazor plugin (I think it was lazor) to allow the 2.5km viewing distance to be exceeded, but this did not have any effect on how fast or how far a camera will track a kerbal from a fixed position (the fixed position being the base of the elevator) But I must say, all this talk has got me fired up again and I hate when I can't solve a problem, so I am now going to go test a new theory that I have... There are parts that did not exist in the game when I tried it last, so my hope is a command chair could solve my issue, Ill post results shortly. I also have some shots to post for something im making to donate to the kerbtown pack, just at work at the moment trying to get these last couple hours to go faster...
  23. I can tell you why. I know and talk to otehr modellers on skype and they said that a sidefffect of exporting in the required format is a massive hike in poly count. Supposedly, there is some way to counteract this. I don't know what it is. As for the space center scene, that is inherently too high poly to begin with, only made worse by what I just said.
  24. If we're gonna talk making the game more accessible, I think sorting out the single node attachment behaviour is what needs doing next. Because it frankly doesn't work on a bigger scale. Strutting helps sure, but its a very tricky thing to get right, and means big rockets aren't very accessible. When you have made a big rocket that works, Typically its a mess of structural elements and girders with more resemblance to architecture than a rocket. I hope this is something that gets looked into very soon. Its absolutely neccesary if they are ever to exceed 2.5m diameter parts anyway, As anyone who has tried 3.75m mod parts would know - they wobble terribly.
