STS Space Shuttle Challenges: PROVE YOUR PILOTING METTLE Earn a Badge!

Recommended Posts

Now you have my attention... Nothing against your shuttle, I just prefer to fly my own crafts :P

Also, how about a Rescue mission?

There was a slight mishap in the very early development of my shuttle (I forgot RTGs and to top off the OMS fuel tanks)... And one test flight got stranded in orbit without fuel and electricity. Second orbiter was launched with extra crew cabins to dock and save the stranded guys. Jeb also volunteered to stay behind with a bit of fuel the second orbiter could spare, deorbited and landed the first orbiter intact on KSC runway. (I know it's not much, but I felt like a badass )

(I can't keep a straight face just imagining Zekes trying to dock two of his shuttles :D)

I love the idea of a rescue mission... developing...

Any badges you've been saving for me, ingima? :)

I think Jenvis specifically needs an award for the STS-7 landing. He had to dodge 3 hills that were higher than Columbus... Columbus needs refitting for Inter-Munar travel (Hint, Hint)!

I finished the STS-Fuel Pod challenge along with an RTLS abort mission. As mentioned before i had a bug that tore apart my ship's wings, even though the entry was accepted by the OP i restarted the game and thankfully i had a save while near the KSC and i landed the ship intact. As for the RTLS abort mission i may not win an efficiency award for recovering the cargo but hey i managed to land safely after a death spiral once the main tank was dropped that led me to go for a landing at runway 09.

Lol. You drained the tank. Works.

Congrat's Commander. This is yours:

STS Fuel Pod altitude of 301,592. Good job! You are in first place.

Yes! Based on the above, this is yours I believe. Congratulations!

Do I get bonus points for doing this in my shuttle?

Here you go Zekes. You are the first to be awarded this.

et2p8E4.jpg

The Flight Director award is available to any space shuttle architect who has designed their own space shuttle system and completed any mission of the STS Challenges using their own shuttle. It is able to be ranked up like the Shuttle Commander, five levels (four stars), with the completion of additional STS Challenges using their own shuttle. The Mission Control award is the same as the Flight Director except that it is only awarded to those who fly your shuttle or if you fly someone else's shuttle other than the STS Space Shuttle. I will update this thread's OP shortly. These awards can be self-awarded. Posting in this STS Challenges thread is not required for Flight Directory or Mission Control awards.

Congratulations!

Space shuttle name: Like a Baws

I guess the score is 400053m.

Failed a little on the deorbit burn, I could have easily done everything again and deorbit properly, but what followed was funny and I left it like this, just as a reminder of what kind of game we are playing.

I've also encountered that bug with the craft exploding when getting close to the ground, but I managed to land it.

PS: You could move the leaderboard closer to the beginning of the post, so it's easier for people to find.

And like a boss you landed it at the KSC in spite of disintegrating wings! (For those reading this, to avoid bugged wings in .90 KSC, try landing at KSC Island for a worry free landing).

Since the STS Fuel Pod mission exceeds the goals for the Maiden Flight mission, you have achieved all of these:

STS Mission Specialist Qualification

Rvs3vgQ.jpg

STS Pilot Qualification

sE1QW9Q.jpg

STS Commander Qualification

Gm9RLVR.jpg

STS Mission Specialist I

EynVoXa.jpg

STS Pilot I

If you post screenshots or vid doing an RTLS abort mission with the STS Fuel Pod, you will receive your Commander I rating.

And you are now in first place in the Hall of Fame, as like a boss, you raised the bar by a whopping 100km! Great job!

I've seen several submissions now, and I think I will need to add to the rules a mandatory roll program maneuver between launch and 10km to up the skill level a little bit. The real space shuttle rolled its tail to the ocean, and flew to space upside down. Your score will stay, but all new submissions will require a roll program after launch and before 10km or the start of a gravity turn, whichever occurs first.

I made fuel pod to orbit with shuttle named Bounty. Pe 201000 m and ap 201031 m. For some reason pod rcs thrusters didn't work, so I had difficulties adjusting that 100 m margin. When I tried to land my shuttle explosed before runaway. Nothing seems to fix that, but today I tried again and there were no explosions. Strange.

Plenty of monopropellant, orbit could be a little higher. Maybe next time.

Nice challenge, thank you.

Great job! Welcome to the STS Astronaut Corps! You are also now on the leaderboard!

You have also earned the following:

JfuP7ZU.jpg

STS Mission Specialist Qualification

Gm9RLVR.jpg

STS Mission Specialist I

The Pilot Qualification and Pilot I ratings now require a true-to-NASA-fashion roll program between launch and your gravity turn, essentially flying the shuttle with the tail facing the ocean upside down until about 50km MECO (Main Engine Cut Off) with a roll over to separate the tank downward. Since it may not have been clear when you did your attempt, these are yours too. All further posters will be required to do a roll program tail facing ocean after launch and before a gravity turn, and a roll back up for MECO and External Tank separation.

I did this mission for fun, as this is one of the first challenges I have actually posted in.(I keep making crafts and things like that for others, but I never seem to get around to finishing them )

There we go, I believe I might have gotten Commander, but you should check first.

Awesome mission! Love the KSC Island landing for your first time. Now THAT takes skill. :)

Congratulations, Commander! These are yours:

Unfortunately only an honorary award to keep it fair to the STS Astronaut Corps and Hall of Fame contenders.

However you've earned the following honorary award!

Awesome job! Making shuttles is not easy.

New OP! Current winners grandfathered in. I indexed all the awards, including the honorary awards such as Flight Director.

To make running this program easier, simply post what you want me to review, or award yourself! I essentially made all the badges follow a logical tree that anyone can follow. Let me know if you have questions, else post your submissions for the Hall of Fame, and/or post your mission progress for all to see!

Discovery I - Maiden Flight

Thanks inigma for developing this craft and challenge.. your STS is a pleasure to fly!

I've chosen to name my challenge submissions after the shuttle Discovery, as I was able to see it launch May 31, 2008 on mission STS-124. All 'maiden flight' mission goals achieved.

Space Shuttle Horizon launched on its 3rd mission to deliver a fuel pod to the orbiting Copernicus Station. During the launch the boosters separated prematurely. Horizon immediately executed a RTLS and landed back a KSC intact with all crew safe.

Great pics Klatt! :)

btw, here is my latest STS mission, delivering the STS Hubble Space Telescope for my Mission Specialist IV mission:

1st attempt:

2nd attempt:

A mission to deploy the HST developed by xoknight. This mission also was run to test the new KMU MMU developed by Rune which unfortunately nearly goes all HAL on him. Inigma unintentionally demonstrates the water landing emergency procedure for the STS-4 Space Shuttle.

2nd landing attempt:

I opted to go with no payload because I have a mac, and my frame rate is already slow with just the craft, I didn't need even more! I completed every qualification in this mission to become a: STS Space Shuttle Astronaut, Mission Specialist, Pilot, and Commander. I hope you enjoy! I certainly enjoyed myself doing this :)excaliber1.pngexcaliber2.pngexcaliber3.pngexcaliber4.pngexcaliber5.pngexcaliber6.pngexcaliber7.pngexcaliber8.pngexcaliber9.pngexcaliber10.pngexcaliber11.pngexcaliber12.pngexcaliber13.pngexcaliber14.pngexcaliber15.png

First, welcome to the forums! :)

Looks like you're having some problems adding images to your post. Might I recommend you upload them to an image-hosting service first, then linking to them from there? My personal choice (and that of many other users here) is IMGUR, but there are other options out there as well.

Hope this helps!

Specialist is right. Go sign up for an imgur.com account and upload your pics there. Then post the url links to them here and we can all enjoy your success! Glad you like the STS! Congrats on making Commander!

I'll add you to the Astronaut Corps list as soon as you can get your pictures to load!
