Vanishing Asteroid

After a asteroid mission managed to land an asteroid near the Kerbal Space Center, I built a vehicle to try to move the asteroid closer. However, after various hijinks including the asteroid moving vehicle being stuck and needing to call for backup, the asteroid mysteriously vanished, leaving behind a group of kerbals looking silly. Given that I wanted an asteroid near KSC, what can I do to get the asteroid back?

Couldn't you have just reverted your current craft to launch or quickloaded?

It is likely that the asteroid was not saved due to the claw part. When switching craft, if there is a claw part loaded then all craft will throw a NullReferenceExeption and will fail to save properly.

Was a probe core attached? Otherwise it may have been considered debris. Try turning up your max debris in the settings or leaving a probe core attached.
