Creating your own Kerbals without Kerbalizer?

Recommended Posts

OK, so, All I want to do is rename one of my kerbals to "Wafle R. Kerman", Is it possible and how?!

I will most likely order Kerbalizer soon, so if it's not possible i'll just wait till I get Kerbalizer.

Kerbalizer doesn't change kerbals in game! Don't buy it if that is what you want it for.

You can rename kerbals in the save game file. Just find the kerbal and change his name then save the file.

There are also several mods that allow you to change names in game. I will post some links when I find the mods again.

To rename your kerbals, just do this:

You can edit your persistent.sfs in in your KSP folder under *\saves\(name of your saved game).

Near the top you'll find this:

CREW

{

name = Jebediah Kerman

brave = 0.5

dumb = 0.5

badS = True

state = 1

ToD = 0

idx = 0

}

Just change the name to whatever you want and save the changes. Next time you load your game his name will have changed.

Also, Kerbalizer does nothing to the actual game itself, it's a completely seperate program as far as I know.

EDIT: If you want to change how kerbals look in-game, look into Texture Replacer, a mod.

I just want the name, but I tried the persist file thing, is there a special way I have to do it? because when I tried it, it didn't work.

Did you do it while the save wasn't currently being used, and/or NOT save the file afterwards?

I imagine those would cause problems. Otherwise, I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work (maybe you edited the wrong save file?)

It should work with just editing it using Notepad.

Make sure you are in KSP's main menu when you do it. Edit the persistence.sfs with a plain text editor (like notepad, as Norpo suggests). Also, make sure there are no empty lines when you are done editing (i.e. don't put extra returns around a new kerbal entry.) Make the name edit, then go start the game. If you reload any quicksaves, the name will go away.

Also, do not rename any kerbals that have scored records, such as first to orbit. If they have entries in the Progress Tracker or in the Contracts section, you will cause the game to crash. Your best bet would be to edit one of the Applicants, then hire him after starting your game.

Cheers,

~Claw

Alternatively, you can stay inside the current game, make a quicksave, change the desired kerbal's name in the quicksave.sfs file, and quickload. The persistent.sfs file will automatically update itself to the loaded quickload.

Not if the kerbal is "fresh" without any achievements, as Claw has said. I've done this multiple times without breaking anything.

EDIT: Just for confirmation, I went into a save with a lot of progress done and a bunch of ships and stations orbiting. Made a backup, hired a fresh lab rat kerbal, quicksaved, renamed him in the quicksave, quickloaded, everything is fine and dandy.

Disclaimer: I do not guarantee it won't break your game, just stating it works in mine. Always make a backup of your save before messing with the files.
