Does anyone else see shadows above 1280?

Rather than file a bug report I want to find out if I\'m the only one affected by this first.

I see no shadows with any resolution over a width of 1280, except when on the menu screen and while the flight scene is loading so I know KSP is capable of rendering them, it just isn\'t doing so for me.

I have messed with the terrain shader but of course that had no effect, and changing the shadow cascade slider also does nothing, oh and it makes no difference whether I use fullscreen or windowed.

Here is what I see at a resolution of 1440x900.

This is the same scene changed to 1280x960.

And finally the 1440x900 scene again but this time with the menu open.

It may just be my card and driver, a Radeon HD4850 with the FGLRX Linux driver, but seeing as I can see shadows I don\'t this is the cause.

Just speculation here, but maybe something is turning off shadows (and other effects) when the frame rate drops below some threshold. Do you see shadows on Mun?

Do you see shadows in the rain? *

* Woke up in my clothes again this mornin\'

Don\'t know exactly where I am

I should heed my doctor\'s warning

He does the best with me he can

He says I suffer from delusion

I\'m so confident I\'m sane

This ain\'t no optical illusion

How do you explain

Shadows in the rain?

It must be a limitation of my driver, after a little more testing I find this:

With 1280x960 I have shadows as normal, all other settings are high/on.

With 1440x900 and antialiasing off I get shadows everywhere.

With 1440x900 and antialiasing on I get shadows on the Mun but not on Kerbin.

Oh well it\'s not a big deal and I can live with it, no sense filing a bug report when it\'s not a bug.

From the screenshots you posted, antialiasing doesn\'t seem to make much of a difference anyway... unless of course you had it disabled when you took them ;)

I\'ve got a Nvidia card, but I\'m also running Linux, and for me too AA doesn\'t seem to work properly, and/or produce texture artifacts when activated (not exclusive to KSP). I\'ve experienced this for at least three generations of Nvidia hardware now.

It seems a bit unlikely that two competing hardware manufacturers have the same bugs in their drivers, but it is of course possible.

I had AA off for those pics, here is 1440x900 with AA off:

And here is the exact same scene with it on 2x:

It seems to make no difference what level of AA I use either, and yeah it\'d be very strange for two different drivers and cards to display the same bug, maybe this is internal to KSP after all? I don\'t know if it could be related to framerate as this is with a small ship and my framerate is fine in this scene.

Maybe I wasn\'t clear enough, but I see this behaviour in other games, too.

So far I haven\'t heard of framerate affecting shadows or antialiasing, only the other way around ;)

As far as antialiasing is concerned, I have also noticed that the level of AA seems to make no difference in visual quality. I don\'t know why, but it seems like changing AA does nothing.

To me AA is only important for really high quality games like Deus Ex or Mass Effect. With KSP, AA seems to be a bit overkill for the engine, and might just be best left off up to until better texture quality is put into the game, if ever. As it is now, KSP is awesome.

I always though AA was for low resolutions where the jagged edges were most noticeable, while at hi res you didn\'t really need it.

For me with KSP, I do see a small difference but it doesn\'t seem to matter what setting I choose, 2x is just as good as 8x, but in other games I have seen more of an improvement with higher AA settings, but even then it\'s only really noticeable when the resolution was low to start with.

  • 1 year later...

I know this thread is old but I can confirm that I had this bug ever since 0.18 up till 0.22 and I'm getting awfully tired of it. If I run 1280x960 for example shadows work but if I run 1920x1080 it wont.

I have always lived with out the shadows, can bee seen in most of my movies except for a few captured with the native linux port.

Its only the windows version that has problems for me under wine.

And a faulty GFX card would not produce a predictable problem like this so its software for sure.

I know more users have had this problem to where lowering the rendering quality worked but do not work for me.

I run a GTX570 with 1.25Gb of ram and a i7 3930K @ 4Ghz and total of 32Gb of ram.

I assume sal_vager runs windows? If so this is not just a wine under linux problem, I figured it was but then its a real problem with the game.

I run a up to date gentoo system, but no driver or other changes have ever made a difference.

Also AA do work for me even under wine. Byt dont expect F1 to capture AA on the screenshot. Will not do so for me. I see the difference IRL tough. You need some other capture software to get the AA effect on a screenshoot/video.
