Feature request: Canyon system near KSC

Recommended Posts

I'd like to request than a canyon system be added near Kerbal Space Center so that I have somewhere awesome to test the handling and/or impact tolerance of all the aircraft I build. Flying through an extensive canyon system would be super cool... maybe the canyon bed could also have a lot of sweet jumps for rover testing.

Try to start a thread like this in a Sugestions and development discussion next time. IMHO Squad for now won't change the terrain on Kerbin as they are adressing some old bugs and issues. However, you can test your vehicle over the curvy river on the western side of the continent that is west to KSC.. Problem is that you have to fly 1000 or more km to it.

Thanks kerbalmaps.com for the original map.

Considering the distance, is there any mod that can "autopilot" an aircraft to a specific location, or at least just leave it pointed the right way better than SAS? (SAS seems to lose strength in aircraft...)

Maybe Hyperedit to valley near the river and then take off?

A mod that adds a launch site near that river is what you are looking for. I think kerbinside had one.

Although if Kerbin had a canyon added , it should be in a mesa like area. Maybe they could add one north of KSC, where the Sahara desert would be on Africa (lets face it, KSC's continent is so similar to Africa that you can use one as a location reference for the other)

Edit: looking at a map, I think the sandy coastal area in southwest of KSC's continent (we need some names for these places!)

I'd love to have a nearby canyon to try flying through--right now all we've got for glider excitement is trying yet again to zoom through the arch in the Science Facility. It'd be great practice for off-world flight missions; for instance, when Bill tells Jeb he's crazy for volunteering to pilot a flight through the Great Rift on Dres, Jeb can say "It'll be just like bulls-eyeing womp rats in Kerman's Canyon back home."

Thanks for the heads-up - I looked for a suggestions forum, but I guess i didn't look hard enough.

The riverbed is okay... but honestly its too wide, not deep enough, and most importantly not treacherous enough. :) What I want is something that will test piloting skill as well as aircraft performance.

The mountain range just west of KSC is not sufficient?

It isn't :( Believe me, I've crashed into those mountains plenty of times trying to fly as close as possible to the surface. A canyon system would be much better - twisting back and forth at high speeds, multiple paths you can take... I'd fly through it until I run out of fuel or throw up from vertigo... either option is fine with me, lol.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
