Best way to make a GIF?

Hi,

Just wanted some advice on how to make a high-quality GIF. As far as I can tell, there's two options:

1. Spam screenshot button, find a program online to put it together

2. Record with some video device, then find a program to convert it to a GIF

My question, really, is what is the best way to go about it? I'd prefer it to be as high-quality as possible.

Give GifCam a shot, it's really easy to use and seems to be high quality. You have to scroll down the page a bit to find the download.

Okay, downloaded it, and did he most basic test I could think of: typing.

My typing isn't the smoothest ever, so take that into consideration.

Functions as advertised so far (at least with Notepad), so I'll try KSP in a moment.

Update: KSP gif

I highly recommend putting KSP in windowed mode and zooming out from your target, so as to get a small gif (if that makes any sense), as Full Screen gifs take a long time to record and upload.

Results: Not perfect, but it works.

If you want an .gif avatar, you can use this convenient site to resize the gif you want and use the optimize tool to get it below the filesize requirement. It must be no more than 19.5 kb and 64x64 pixels to work on the forums.

For me, the best is gif movie gear. Of course my definition of "best" is "can squeeze a masthead or skyscraper ad into a 35kb file to meet publisher requirements," ymmv.

one time i took a video of a game by spamming the screenshot button and using photoshop to turn all the images into a gif. it worked but was not very good.
