Have docking controls changed? Shift throttles up while in docking mode

Recommended Posts

There is a line in the change log saying they've unified the controls, which has probably changed how docking mode works. They had said previously that docking mode was counter-intuitive, hardly-used and likely to be brought into line with the staging mode controls.

Yeah, you can say "unified". Controls in docking mode and staging mode are now the same. You can't use WASD for translation anymore (it will rotate your ship) and space activates the next stage.

Huh? If so, in what way does docking mode differ from staging mode then? (Maybe I don't know, because I always docked in staging mode to have rotation and translation available. If that difference is gone, what's still different?)

Couldn´t find any difference. So, i don´t know why docking mode is avaible

It doesn't. According to one of the devnotes, "docking mode" is now simply an alternate set of key bindings. I haven't looked at the controls config, but you should be able to map keys to do one thing in normal mode, and a whole 'nother thing in docking mode, but you'll have to go to the trouble of setting the docking mode controls up.

How do you change these then? I've been trying to use docking mode and can't see how to change the keys without changing making them mess with staging mode controls. I seriously need help here because docking mode was my preferred docking control set

i had the same problem but it is fixable. start the game and immediately go into settings and select input controls and look at how the keys are bound between normal flight and translation. see those little glowing bullets? they are set to function the same no matter what mode you're in. you need to select the primary flight (WASD) and unset the translation flag (make sure you actually press the key on your keyboard or no changes will be saved) and then go down to the translation section and unset the flight and rotation flags whilst also reassigning the keys back to the way you like.

i was, at first, furious at the change, but once i understood that it is a layered keybinding that depends on your flight mode, i think this setup is brilliant. it would have been nice if the devs had communicated this change because even though many here seem to regard translation as "eh, what good is it?", some of us are master-dockers who can park an orbiting dumptruck on a pinhead with our translation skills and for us, the old translation controls were not only just fine, but imperative that they used the same WASD hand position. strange to find myself so disappointed by something i consider to be a radical improvement.

Here are the new controls, I J K L are the new WASD for docking and H N are Shift and control. Pretty easy to use if you do both hands are the keyboard as the controls are in the same configuration so muscle memory helps and you can get more control with being able to do both controls at once. Hope this helps. I tried the old controls and tried to go forward but just ignited the engine and was like "crap, crap ,crap".

It was mentioned in the Dev Notes from 11 Feb:

Since version 0.18 and the addition of docking, we’ve had this docking control mode which very few players ever got around to using. I didn’t remove that, but I did come up with a more elegant way to implement the control binding switching, so we could do away with all those duplicate input mappings on the settings screen. Now, there is only one input mapping for pitch, yaw, roll and linear translations, and the docking mode mapping is done using the secondary key bindings and a new state toggling system which is simpler and more flexible than the old way. So much more flexible, in fact, that you can now use docking mode as an alternate control scheme in any way you want. Rather use it to swap about yaw and roll inputs for controlling rockets and spaceplanes with a joystick? Now you can. Also, Axis bindings now also have secondary mappings of their own, so you can have a second axis bound to each action, either as a redundancy or with a different set of UI mode toggles.

Personally I never used docking mode, so I haven't noticed (to be honest, I'm playing a new career mode and haven't yet unlocked RCS, so I've not used them yet).

Haven't had it happen in 1.0 yet, but I always found docking mode a pain in the past. I only ever got into it accidentally, and I have never figured out the keyboard control to return to staging mode. Also, the settings don't allow you to re/unmap the docking mode toggle key.
