Ferram vs. Stock

Recommended Posts

With FAR you can stall. With stock you cannot stall (at least I haven't managed to with any of abominations I've built so far).

Believe me, it's definitely possible to stall in stock. Heck, I've even managed to (semi-deliberately) spontaneously disassemble a couple of planes due to aerodynamic stress.

I ought to upload my Valentina Stunt Plane somewhere...

I gave stock aero a fair look for a couple of weeks, but having used Farram (sic) for so long it just felt way too easy. I was landing everything on the runway, and my kerbals are not accustomed to such luxuries. As one of my poorly designed planes coasted in towards the runway at 55m/s, without a hint of stalling, I decided this would not do, and installed NuFAR, which has proved to be as good as I expected.

Stock aero is of course a vast improvement, but is still not a patch on FAR

FAR makes things easier. I use the graphs and stability derivatives to save a TON of time testing: I know my plane will be stable before I ever take it out of the hangar. If the only thing in FAR was the stability calculation tools it would still be a must-have mod. With the improved voxel model for calculations it's even beter.

Before 1.0 it was a no brainer to use FAR. Stock aero was just wacky. I've been trying out the stock now and although it does have a bit of realism to it now, it is still extremely forgiving. I put a plane into a belly flop situation and I didn't even notice because the wings were just casually holding me steady as I plowed into the wind at what amounts to an 80+ degree AoA. Once I figured it out I effortlessly nosed over and recovered almost immediately. And I've also discovered I can perform kite like landings with aircrafts. Just fly towards the ground and cut hard left or right a few feet from it and land easily at 40m/s.

So again it comes down to preference. Although I am enjoying the fun feel of stock, I think I prefer the challenge of FAR, so I'm gonna go back to it.
