Contracts and "build a new X"

For the contracts that specify say, "build a new satellite", do we have to design from scratch, or do old satellite payloads sitting in the VAB work, after attaching a lifter sub-assembly and launching it as a new mission?

Sometimes it lets me use old designs that are launched as brand new missions, and sometimes I have to build a totally fresh and original design to get it to complete. Haven't really toyed with the 1.0.2 yet, so this is experience from the straight 1.0.0 release, just wondering which I need to be aiming at doing.

It has to be a new launch. I have a rocket called sat-Dev1 saved that I use for all my 'satellite in orbit around kerbin' contracts. Each time I get the contract I goto VAB, load the craft, launch, and profit.

Also, when sitting on the launch pad you can check the green tick boxes in the contract list on the right hand side. That way you can check if have everything. I almost got caught out not realising I needed mystery goo on one!

Old designs work if they satisfy all the conditions.

But the craft has to be launched *after* accepting the contract.

You can't accept a contract to put something in a specific orbit, then take a craft already in orbit and move it to that specific orbit.

There is also an exploit (or at least there was in 0.90) where it would consider a craft new if it docked and undocked to another ship. I once accidentally completed a simple "put an orbital station around the Mun" contract with my normal Mun mission tug and lander because it had enough crew capacity to meet the requirements.

Think this work the other way no, if you dock anything old to an new craft its an high chance its no longer an new craft.

it also look like landing something on another body also kill the launch new craft flag.

Has an Mun and Minmus base who neither managed to finish the contract because of this.
