Build Station/Surface outpost contracts help (too unrealistic?)

Recommended Posts

Hi!, I've been playing the career mode trying to start my orbital stations and bases, and I always try to look for a contract that wants me to do so, so that I get funds from building my stations/bases. But since the release, it seems like the contracts are asking for impossible things... here is an example:

BUILD A NEW ORBITAL STATION AROUND KERBIN:

-Have a facility supporting at least thirteen kerbals

-Have a research lab at the station

-Have a viewing cupola at the station

-Have 4,000 units of liquid fuel in your station

and the usual orbital station requierements (antenna docking port, etc.)

13 kerbals?! 4k of liquid fuel?!?! :confused:Thats a lot! Now, I'm not sure if I can make this contract with multiple launches... but considering how little they pay (190k), I think this contract just doesn't make any sense.

Also, this requirements wont let you make your stations the way you want.

So straight to the point, I have 2 questions:

Can I achieve this contracts with multiple launches?

Can I modify the requirements of this contracts to fulfill my desires?

Thanks!

That isn't too far fetched. But to answer the question:

1. Yes you can do multiple launches.

2. Not really (without cheating), but you can make the station modular so you can remove stuff and build it how you like.

You can also use ISRU to get the fuel from an asteroid. So if you have a mission to capture one of those...

The way I would do it:

*Launch the Cupola and Lab and fuel via rocket, you should be able to get that in one or two launches, make sure it has the standard equipment too. 4 Kerbals (2 Kerbals in Cupola, 2 in Lab)

*Build an SSTO with 2 Mk2 Cabins and a docking port. Fly it up with or without kerbals, doesn't matter, and dock it to the station. Then bring it home for a full refund. 10 Kerbals (4 per Mk2 Cabin, 2 for Mk2 Cockpit)

Thanks for the fast reply! Now it makes more sense!

This also works for surface outposts?

And if I wanted to modify the contract, how could I do it?? Just so I can remove the lab or cupola, since they really reduce my liberty to create something useful for my stations/bases, also I hate having like three labs on the same base!

Would I have to modify the persistent? Is there a way to do it in the debug menu?

Thanks again

It's much harder to recover extra parts from a surface base, but you can just jettison the extra cupolas/labs, then obliterate them from the tracking station.

Use it as an opportunity to build up some intra-system infrastructure. Stations around the mun, minmus & kerbin for research and fuel supply. Shuttlecraft to move personnel around between them, stuff like that.

While the initial costs are high, longer term the costs broadly even out. I use mine to do science while unlocking the tech tree, and to move groups of tourists around in system.

The downside is managing it all, it can get quite involved. I currently have a group of 8 tourists and 5 personnel just arrived back at Kerbin having completed a Min, Minmus, Solar tourist and experience run, and have another group of 12 tourists waiting to go up.
