Accidentally deployed parachutes in space - need to fix

Recommended Posts

I thought I could repack a parachute deployed in space using an engineer but if I click on the parachutes while right next to them on EVA (orbiting), no option appears. Do I need to be landed to repack them? The engineer has four stars.

A fix for this is right-clicking the parachute (while focuses on the whole ship, not on EVA) and changing Minimum pressure to .4 or .5. They won't deploy until lower in the atmo, after reentry. (Unless it's duna or eve, in that case, consult the barameter)

If you can quick save set min pressure to .5 atm and reenter anyway. Thats around 7-12 Km so a shallow re-entry should have you through the shock layer before then. For faster landings, use 20% of chutes as droges at 700m full deploy and the rest at 300m.

careful, they will in all likelihood burn during reentry.

can't find the thread right now, but someone claimed, that chutes have four stages

a) packed and waiting for staging (good)

B) staged (active, not yet deployed. may burn during reentry!)

c) deployed (moderate drag)

d) open

No. That's not quite right. If you stage them but atmospheric pressure hasn't gone up enough to deploy them, they won't burn up.

I regularly set my parachutes to deploy at 0.35 atmospheres and stage them whilst in orbit so I can't forget them on the way down. I've only lost parachutes when the deploy pressure was set to the default 0.01 atmosphere.

Parachute has to have cometh out of its shell before you can repack it. Someone make a mod to fix it :)

The ability to reset activated, but not semi-deployed chutes, is included in the StockPlus portion of my Stock Bug Fix modules.

The possible states are:

- Stowed: How they are most of the time on your vessel. Internally, the parachute is actually "deactivated."

- Active: After you right-click & deploy or stage the chute, it enters "Active" state. The chute is now looking for atmospheric pressure greater than the selected "Min Pressure" so it can semi-deploy.

- Semi-Deployed: The parachute is semi-deployed and looking for an Above Ground Altitude less than the selected "Altitide" so it can fully deploy.

- Deployed: The parachute is fully deployed (maximum drag) and is waiting for landing with speeds less than the auto-cut speed, or splashdown.

- Cut: This state is auto entered after the above touchdown conditions, or when user-selected.

There is a belief that Activated chutes (staged but not yet deployed) will burn up on reentry. I cannot find any evidence of this, and I believe it's actually that the Min Pressure setting selected is too low. When this happens, the chute moves to semi-deployed and is immediately ripped away or burned up. Putting the pressure up to 0.5 (on Kerbin) will offer the best chance for chute survival in this scenario.

Cheers,

-Claw

No. That's not quite right. If you stage them but atmospheric pressure hasn't gone up enough to deploy them, they won't burn up.

I can confirm that this works. This is my standard method of retrieving rocket stages. Even when the fins explode every single time, the parachutes deploy and the rest of it lands safely.

I'm actually having the same problem right now. Looking for a way to save Jeb and Bob from death in my hard difficulty save. I will try setting the chutes to .5 atm. Here goes nothing.

Edit: It worked. I can now confirm that setting it to .5 will allow it to deploy roughly around 5km. Jeb and Bob are safe. I thank you my friends.
