Has anyone aerobraked around Jool in 1.0 yet?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure someone has. If you're careful, you might not even need heat shields. Lately, though I've found that it's just easier (and safer) to set up a Tylo gravity assist and enter the Jool system that way.

Just arrivedarrow-10x10.png at Jool this afternoon, and aerobraked at ~192 km, no heatshield needed and nothing exploded. :)

Oh, really? So where was your periapps afterwards? Around Laythe-ish distance?

Oh, ok

No, much further out. I did a terrible transfer burn, so I had a much higher velocity than optimum when I reached the Jool system, and now I'm in an orbit that goes out to 950,000 km. !!!

I have a ship following in 100 days or so (launched at the same time), I will try the same aerobrake, and I expect that will end up in a much more sensible orbit.

I've done several aerocaptures at Jool lately. They're a doddle---don't worry about them.

In 1.0.2, you get a greater slowing effect much higher in Jool's atmosphere than before. The Pe you need to get your Ap where you want will of course vary with your relative speed compared to Jool, which in turn depends on the angle at which you cross Jool's path, but any sort of reasonable efficient transfer on or near a window works out about the same. I haven't yet had to set my Pe lower than 190 to get out near Laythe. This means you hardly enter the atmosphere at all, so aren't in it long enough to heat up to dangerous levels no matter how bright the flames.

That said, your Ap post-aercocapture at Jool is now WAY more sensitive to slight differences in Pe, as in only a few hundred meters. There's really very little difference in Pe altitude between not capturing at all, getting an AP out near Tylo, or being eaten by Jool. So as always, set Pe, hit F5, see what happens, F9, tweak your Pe very slightly, F5 again, repeat until you end up with what you want. I can't wait until the Trajectories mod learns how to work in the stock atmosphere, which will reduce the hassle of this a lot.

There is a build up now that tentatively works with stock 1.0.2. Ignore the thread title that says otherwise if they still have not changed it.

I have not, but I find using gravity braking on Tylo or Lathe to be much more practical. With Tylo, simply passing within 250km in front of its orbit is usually enough for a Jool capture.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
