tourists can't EVA - so how to rescue from orbit?

Recommended Posts

Tried to do a cheap mun landing for a tourist contract and I just ran out of fuel getting off the mun, so now I'm in a Kerbin orbit with a periaps of 740km, and an apoaps of 10,700km. Tourist can't EVA so even if I rendezvous with them in orbit, I can't get them into my rescue ship.

Ship doesn't have a docking port either.

Any way to bring him back?

With the claw and possibly a cargo bay you can get almost anything back. I have used this one before:

I suppose you've got a big problem if the ship is bigger than this, (size 2 and a bit) so you might have to settle to the claw without a cargo bay to protect it in reentry.

So the easy/slightly cheaty way of doing it is to dock using the claw and transfer fuel. I don't like this though because the claw shouldn't be able to transfer fuel. It is also "boooring" to quote some Kerbals.

Did you upgrade the R&D building to allow for EVA's at all? I could've sworn my tourists were able to perform EVA. Hm. Been awhile I might be wrong though. As for your situation... Not much you can do. You can try and push the craft with another ship. But that'd be a nightmare for 750km I imagine.

I would just flip on infinite fuel for the time being honestly and be done with it. You could also download Kerbal Attachment System and Inventory System then either strap on some rcs and mono or some hooks and tow it.

Edit: Oh yeah... The cargo bays.

The OP said that they completely ran out of fuel, infinite fuel won't help if theres none to begin with.

The claw should also allow you to transfer the tourists to the rescue craft, if you don't want to waste your fuel dragging the whole thing back. Just click on the hatch of whichever part they're in and choose "Transfer".

what worked for me several times now:

stick a claw on a girder, load girder with heaps of parachuts, pack a lifter under it.

dock claw, deorbit burn, undock rest of lifter, land safely.

pro: very low mass requirements on rescue ship

con: might not survive reentry if coming in to steep

Handy answer to that problem: airbrakes. They're incredibly effective (overpowered, IMHO). My experience has been that it's practically impossible to have reentry problems if there are deployed airbrakes on the ship.
