Moth Mk2 - Ultralight Ion Dropship

Hey all,

It's my great pleasure to present the all new Moth Mk 2, the last word in Ion powered dropships. The original Moth was one of my most popular downloads and was always going to be a tough act to follow.

Fortunately this new model really outclasses the original in every way. While the old version used the heavy NCIS adapter to offset the mass of the cockpit, this new edition has a bespoke crafted tail section consisting of more useful things like RTGs, and batteries while still retaining the parachute of the previous version for landing back on Kerbin.

Another big change is the cargo port which let's you trick out your Moth with all manner of bling, or even indulge in a spot of base building!

The download also comes with a handy selection of drop pods to ensure your valuables get to where they need to go in one piece!

DV is around 8,500m/s and this can easily be extended by mounting xenon drop tanks to the docking ports. The craft can be used on Minmus, Gilly, Pol, Bop and Ike (with some fuel reduction).

Did I mention drop pods?

CONTROLS:

1 - Toggle Ion Engines

2 - Deploy Secondary Solar Panels

3 - Toggle Primary Solar Panels/Landing Skids

5 - Undock/De-Couple Top Docking Port

8 - Toggle Drop Pod Gear

9 - Toggle Drop Pod Engines

0 - Toggle Drop Pod Doors

ABORT - Undock/De-Couple Cargo Port

LV INSTRUCTIONS:

Set control to the docking port at the top of the rocket, activate SAS, set full throttle and hit the stage button.

Eject the SRBs and LV drop tanks as soon they become empty.

Once the needle reaches the end of the light blue strip start pitching over on a 90* heading.

By the time the needle gets to the dark blue section you want to be at a 45* angle.

Hold this heading till your apoapsis reaches 40k then gently pitch over and hold course about 5* above the horizon.

Once you apoapsis reaches 80k cut the engines and coast out of the athmosphere.

Circularize then press 0 to open the cargo bay doors.

Undock your moth, and use the RCS thrusters to move it into position onto the docking port at the top of the LV.

Adjust the staging and then seperate the kicker stage, once you use this stage you'll also want to get rid of the remaining RCS in the Moth's cockpit as it will affect the balance of the vessal.

The LV has a probe core and can be de-orbited if and when you choose.

OPERATORS MANUAL:

Like all my craft the Moth Mk 2 features a horizontal axis cockpit for sub-orbital flights/landing and a vertical axis docking port for orbital piloting. The top docking port must be used when performing burns with the navball or using Mechjeb. A joystick is also highly recommended and SAS should be kept on at all times.

The large solar panels were perhaps not designed as landing skids so care needs to be taken on touchdown. The Moth's RTGs and generous electrical storage means you can fold the main panels in long before landing.

If you're doing long burns keep the main pannels deployed and orient the craft to give the main pannels maximum sun exposure where possible. The Moth's bank of RTGs will let you keep running the engines at a reduced level if you do lose the light completely.

The craft features a central main tank and six smaller reserve tanks, three on each side.

The secondary pannels cannot be stowed once deployed but they're designed not to get in the way in things.

In my opinion the craft is light, agile and compact enough to dock just using the engines however it does feature a set of RCS thrusters which can be used by adding an RCS tank to either of the docking ports.

I've put the craft through some pretty hairy re-entries on Kerbin, and while you'll likely get a few explosions along the way they tend to be less important things like batteries and RTGs. The important stuff like the parachute and capsule seems to weather the storm without any problems.

Right, I think that's everything covered. Hope you guys enjoy the craft and let me know if you have any Qs. :)

Honest to god, I'm so thankful you put in the extras like the rover. Its just amazing. Quite frankly, I think this will replace my old low gravity craft, which did operations on Minmus, Gilly and Pol. Thanks so much for this. I just can't WAIT to try it out. Love it!

Yay, release!

Great to see the manufacturing arm of Cupcake Landers starting to rev up again!

After watching that video, I'm still in awe of your piloting skills. I've broken the "skids" way too many times!

This is so cool. Love it. And the video you made is awesome.

Thanks very much! :D

Oh, if you don't mind, I'll be making some payloads. Base payloads.

Can I post them?

Wait, the droppods have gear?

Of course you can! Oh and the droppods used to have wheels but I found them a bit spongy so I switched to landing gear instead.

Sweet, let me know how you get on!

Thanks mate! Not sure what to tell you about the skids except that a joystick could be worthwhile investment. :)

You've inspired- i'm currently attempting to create a super-small Mk. 2 adapter-based VTOL. Uses your docking port trick. Still figuring out the whole Flip-o-Death thing.

What is this Flip-o-Death you speak of? Sounds scary. :sealed:

That ring of battery LEDs... <3

Those mechanical-looking arms made of cleverly-aligned xenon tanks... <3

I love the stylish but also utilitarian aesthetic!

It doesn't hurt that it reminds me of the aesthetic from Descent.

Aside from the fact that these are awesome, I also really like the way you put colored lights inside the bays. Something I never thought of, It's not functional but looks just amazing. Costs more, especially when playing career, but will use because of awesomeness! You gotta invest in coolness too!

wow....just, wow....

Thankyou! :D

Agreed, you can never put a price on cool.

wow

Good functionality and stuff, but that is expected.

You manage to put it together as ART!

These are the most styling little pods I've ever seen, or even dreamt of.

on a scale of 0 to 10, i rate them... 17

They're not the most efficient things around but they do look classy.

Holy crap that's cool.

I'm downloading it now from here:

http://www.old-games.com/download/2413/lander-from-psygnosis-

However, they've throttled it to take 10 hours... I can wait.

Once you master this game you will have VTOL skills most aspire to but few will ever achieve. Seriously, this is the best VTOL trainer there is! A joystick is highly recommended but you can do a pretty job using the mouse. :)

Grr, now I have to hook the mouse back up to my laptop and actually play on a desk. I think I'll do some warm ups first ;-)

Heh guys,

Just a small update, I've put together a little LV designed to get the Moth to the Jool system.

eQg6OF0.jpg

I'm happy to say it's a real doddle to fly and will get your Moth to a stable 80x80k orbit with plenty of fuel left over for extra cargo/de-orbiting.

6ViheK2.jpg

Once in orbit you can dock your Moth to the top of the LV, which then separates to give you a kicker stage that'll see you off to the Jool system.

qIoRkAY.jpg

Success! :D Even with the solar pannel changes the Moth still performs like a charm in the outer reaches of the Jool system.

The LV has a probe core and can be de-orbited if and when you choose.

That's it, have fun! :)
