Can't find .craft or .sfs files or 'saves' folder

Recommended Posts

Kryxal - I have tried the Win 7 search using different parameters without success. I also use xplorer2, a file manager much more powerful than Windows Explorer and its 'Find' tool cannot locate any .sfs files apart from those in the default Scenarios and Training folders.

imaspacestation - No, it's running on C: and my machine does not have Steam installed. Can you tell me why this might be important? It could give me another clue as to where to search.

Thanks for your responses.

Do you have Comodo Internet Security installed?

The reason why your game went to a weird path such as AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86) is because you tried to install it from a guest account. Guest accounts do not have the right privileges to install to the Program Files directory on C:, and by default rather than just failing to install, Win7 actually puts it to VirtualStore and lets the program believe it had installed successfully.

The reason why I'm asking about Comodo is because of the VTRoot folder on your C:\ drive. That's a virtualization folder, used to point to another directory, and I've had clients that ran afoul of this who use Comodo. When Comodo runs any unknown downloaded files (or files from an external drive), it puts them in a virtual sandbox, and that data is stored in VTRoot. If that is the case in your situation, then I'm sorry I have bad news - Comodo deletes all virtual data once the sandbox is reset.

My best advice for you is to shrug it off and start over using your admin account. Remember, also, that you do not have to necessarily re-install the game in order to have two "instances" of it. You can simply copy the entire Kerbal Space Program directory to another location and it will run just fine. I suggest you do that if you want to have two installations, one with mods and the other without.

If this does not satisfy you, try contacting Squad support or posting in the support forums.

Thank you, thank you, thank you guitarxe! You pointed me in the correct direction.

Yes, CIS is installed on my rig but I couldn't understand how the saved game could be loaded in the Guest installation if Comodo was dumping the data overboard. So I looked in VTRoot and hallelujah (Jeff Buckley's version of course) the saved game was there, so I copied the files to the original instance of the game and it is completely intact and operational. What a buzz! Again, thank you, thank you, thank you.

goldenpsp - you were right, at least in one sense. The game is run from the location I mentioned but the saved games were indeed in a different folder.

All I want to know now is why my numerous searches failed to find the files that are so obviously there? But all's well that ends well.

  • 6 months later...

I haven't had anything to do with Win10 yet, but I have a suggestion for you. The name of the file is the name you've typed into the box in the VAB or SPH, so why not tell Windows to search for one of your craft and see what folder path it lies in?

Welp, I got the same problem, but running Windows 10, I don't have such thing as   AppData/Local...

Any ideas where my saves hide?

Thanks in advance, I really want to finally access my craft files :D

Bit of a necro here. Your question is kinda buried under a lot of 6 month old posts. Would probably be better if you opened a new thread. The location of your save folder depends on where you purchased the game. If you got it through steam, then it might be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\KSP_win\saves.

As far as the AppData files are concerned, they are probably hidden by default. You will have to change the default setting. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hidden-files#show-hidden-files=windows-7

Edit : On windows 10, you may not have a button or link for the control panel, but if you type in "control panel" in the search box next to the start button, it'll be the first thing on the list.

edit edit : well, yeah, that link is pretty useless. The setting you need is under File Explorer Options, then under the view tab.

Sorry, didn't realize the thread was from June, I just saw 2015...

As for the saves, I found them in the appdata of another user or kinda mine, I just was a bit stupid
