KSP running Really slow.

Recommended Posts

When I updated to KSP 1.0, I started to get some insane lag WHEN LOOKING AT KERBIN (<keep that in mind), so, I did what I did in 0.90 and edited the config file. Nothing... I Put the settings to the same as before. Nothing... Any Ideas?

Specs:

Operating System: Ubuntu(GNOME) 15.04 (OS shouldn't matter but GNOME might.)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo

RAM: 4GB

Graphics Card: ATI HD 3300 running open source drivers. < not exact model but it's close

Thanks for any help!

Your CPU is a little on the light side, but more noticably, you have 4GB ram.

While KSP is designed (sort of) to not need more than 3-4, you are sharing that last GB with the rest of your OS and whatever else is running. If you're going to upgrade, I'd get a second channel totalling your ram to 8gm

As for editing Config, a main difference between 1.0 and .9 is a lot of textures got switched to DDS, which should IMPROVE your performance, but may not act the same way when editing the config.

Hope someone more knowledgable comes along :)

Both your CPU and GPU are woefully out of date, being at least 6 years old. The GPU is a particular offender, because it's a crappy integrated graphics card. Even a current-generation 500-buck all-in-one budget computer will beat the pants off of both of those specs, so I'd say you're about due for a complete system replacement.

I think that I have a couple gigs lying around... I'll try that but my system might not boot right as it is an old Optiplex...

The reason I have such horible specs is mainly I cant afford much anything, but the GPU is an add on chip. the integrated GPU is intel... I CAN do some RAM upgrades but that's about it...

OP, your box is slightly better than mine (wife says she's going to let me upgrade on the next tax return provided nothing blows up between now and then - and I'm going to have a third kid come November, so an explosion is entirely possible). I have noticed lag before when playing KSP that does get particularly bad when terrain is in view. In the past I used a mod called LoadOnDemand that brought the game up to tolerable levels; alas that it's no longer supported as of 1.0.x. Your next best bet is a mod called Active Texture Management - the Basic level brings my box to a tolerable level, and it doesn't look too much like dreck (unlike the Aggressive Level, which you should utilize if your manufacturer's label is written in Cuneiform). I'm assuming you've also turned down your graphics settings; they don't have to be at the bare minimum levels, but they should be down there a bit. I don't have the game where I can play it right this second but I can look to see where I've got my settings, if that kind of information would be useful to you.

Thought I had a link to ATM somewhere...guess not. Going to have to dig it up. If you run a Google search for "ksp atm" it'll be the first result. Pay attention to the instructions and realize that you'll come close to melting your CPU on the first load, and its going to take a while. Like, start loading the game, go off and play Monopoly, A&A or maybe a game of Catan with a three-year old, and come back to play KSP when you hear the theme music two hours later...

Used to play the game with just 2 GB installed. Lag, lag, lag...it's tough to play a game on geologic time scales......
