1.0 and efficiency

Recommended Posts

Hello,

On KSP 0.9 I had the craft below that once put in orbit around Tylo or Moho, it could land fine using the method in the video below.

But now on KSP 1.0 I can't land.. my deltaV is much lower for some reason (burn time decreased from 8m43s to 3m55s). I checked the parts I'm using and they weren't modified from 0.9 to 1.0, except the LVN's weight.

What is going on?

Thanks.

You're using even less than half the fuel before (since O is heavier than LF, and I assume you use the same fuel tank as 0.9). It would be a surprise to me if the same design would have worked!

Moreover I think the engine has got its weight increased in 1.0.

OP did notice that, but the fuel change is actually much more hidden but more important in terms of designing a rocket, as the same fuel tank doesn't carry the same amount of fuel as before.

So LVN eats more LF than before, is that it?

eats more LF, right, and eats LF at the same rate as the old LF+O (hence stays the Isp)

The LV-N isn't worthwhile on small craft due to the lower reaction mass density. On smaller craft you're better off with the terrier. Plus the LV-N is much heavier than the terrier, and more expensive (if that matters to you). The LV-N is more useful on much larger craft with large overall mass, where the mass of the engine isn't such a significant portion of the dry mass of the ship, and where Mk2 or Mk3 liquid fuel fuselages can be used (the Mk1 are pretty bad on spacecraft).
