How do I get more science?

Recommended Posts

I started a Science career. I launched my first rocket and landed it safely. I unlocked the science option. I built a second rocket with the science modual, I recovered the ship with the modul and was rewarded nothing. I did it again with gray goo, nothing, I tried adding the antenna, nothing.

help please

You have to actually gather science with the science experiment. Right-click on it and choose the "get science" option from the menu (it's called something different for different instruments, e.g. "Log Temperature Data" or "Observe Materials Bay" or whatever), then choose the "keep data" option (green clipboard button) when the little dialog pops up. That will then reward you with science data when you recover the vessel.

The only thing that adding an antenna does is to allow you to transmit your science without having to recover the vessel. That's mainly useful for unmanned probes that aren't coming home again. It's always better to recover the data physically (i.e. with the ship) rather than transmitting, because when you transmit you only get a fraction of the science points.

There's a lot more that can be said about working with science, but that's a good place to start. :)

In what building are the available experiments listed? I don't see anything in the hangers or the science building or the launch pad.

The experiments are parts, so you can see them (generally on the bottom) in the tech tree within the Research and Development buildings. Once you unlock a given experiment (really the part to perform the experiment), you'll see it available in the science tab in both the Vehicle Assembly Building or the Space Plane Hangar.

In the VAB, go to the Science tab. You get the Mystery Goo canister right at the start of the game, and get Materials Bay pretty early in the tech tree. Thermometer and pressure meter follow thereafter.
