1.0.x - Do wings placed 'backwards' work now?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Never really built planes, but I'm considering starting to.

Back in 0.90 and earlier, I remember people having to pay attention that the wings they place on their spaceplanes were the right side up/forward, otherwise they did not produce lift.

Is this still the case in 1.0.x ?

I remember it saying somewhere how its all about the angle of attack now since wings are not like aeroplanes wings where they are curved on the top and flat at the bottom

Well, it's about AoA in real life too...

It's not all about AoA.. 'aerofoil'. Real Wings Have Curves ;) I believe he's pointing out that a wing placed 'straight' on a craft will produce no actual lifting force. It will resist falling, but will not pull your craft up in the slightest.

Wings in KSP are modeled as fully symmetric, and thus for them to make lift they need positive AoA (if that were not so, you'd run into OP's problem of wings needing to be attached only one way). However, they are modeled as wings, and thus have a lift curve rather different from a flat plate.
