No atmospheric/reentry effects

Recommended Posts

Hello!

At first, I want to make clear, that i've read through the known issues list.

I am experiencing the following:

- no reentry effects (aka plasma flames)

- no atmospheric effects (aka sounding shockwave effects)

- "normal" particles and smoke as well as exhaust flames

I am using KSP 1.04 STOCK

I did already a fresh download from the store and wiped all other data before.

No old crafts or else imported, just a clean, fresh download, without any changes.

System settings:

Windows 7 64 Bit

AMD Phenom II X4 920 Processor

4,00 GB RAM

Nvidia GTX 260 1GB - latest driver installed (341.44)

I had no problem with 1.00 and 1.02, so this is completely new for me.

Did not experience any crashes or else - just no effects.

Can anyone help me?

Mav

Hi maverik83, the only fix I've found so far is to replace the Physics.cfg, you can get it here, KSp should come with the correct file but if it's deleted KSP will write a new one with the wrong values.

Apart from that KSP might not be able to read the file properly, it depends where it is installed as to whether it has proper read/write access to files, so please upload your KSP.log a file host or put the contents on a paste site, it may shed light on this issue.

It's good to see you don't have KSP on the desktop, and it looks like it's loading everything without any issues, I'm guessing you tried that file I mentioned, so this may be harder to figure out than I thought.

Can you tell me what you've done so far to try to get re-entry effects, they don't activate at the same times as in 1.0.2

Hi!

So I made two mistakes:

1) I did copy the KSP.log from my old 1.02 copy of KSP (because I searched for it, and in KSP 1.04 the file is called output_log.txt!)

2) I didn't replace the physics file before.

So - I replaced the physics.cfg now and copied the output_log.txt to the dropbox:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20803108/output_log.txt

Unfortunately no effects until now...

Are you going fast enough in the lower atmosphere? What do you see if you launch a Stayputnik Mk1, a RT-10 Hammer and a couple of basic fins straight up?

You should get atmospheric and heating effects, like this.

Javascript is disabled. View full album

maverik83 can you open the Alt+F12 debug menu and click the thermal tab please, get a screenshot of it for me.

Also please upload your settings.cfg

Another thing to do is to install module manager, start KSP, then find ModuleManager.Physics in the GameData folder, upload that too.

Hi Sal!

So, I downloaded the module_manager.dll from your link into the gamedata folder.

After that, I started KSP, made the stayputnik-hammer-thingy and nothing happened.

Here are the shots and files you requested:

Settings:

and the thermal tab:

thanks!

Definitely not working right but I can't see why, I know a guy who might though, I'll ask NathanKell to have a look at your files.

Edit:

On looking more closely I can see that your values in the thermal tab are incorrect, which suggests either the Physics.cfg is wrong (possibly being overwritten?) or it's not being read at all.

It should look like this:

MfTX4FQ.png

Here's the (contents of the) Physics.cfg again, can you compare it to the one you currently have? If they are identical it suggests a read error (though that wasn't in the logs), also check your file after running KSP, see if it was changed.

One thing you could try is setting the Physics.cfg to read-only after replacing it with the correct values.

Hi Sal!

You did it!!!

I replaced my physics.cfg with your posted values, set it to read only and there it goes -booom ;-)

I love things breaking up in the atmosphere (for the first time *g*)

So the lessons learned might be, that KSP writes faulty values in the physics.cfg that prevents atmospheric effects.

Thank you so much!

Now I can go back to burning things up... hrhrhrhr

Woot, glad I could help, and I have a suspicion that you may run into a joystick bug later, so it may be worth your time to set up any stick you're using and then making the settings.cfg read-only as well.

Hello, I'm having the same issue. I'm also not getting any aero effects. For some reason, even after replacing the Physics.cfg file with the one in the link, my convection factor is being reset to 1.100, instead of 6.000; it only happens after entering my saved game. In the main menu, the convection factor is 6.000. That is what I noticed.

I have set the Physics.cfg file to read-only after replacing it and the convection factor was still 1.100 instead of 6.000

I'm running the Steam version of KSP.

Here are my files: http://www.4shared.com/get/ORNmZ6Lxce/KSP_files.html

Everything was fine with aero and heat effecs until now. I also encountered a heating bug, in which a component would suddenly overheat and explode. It was suggested to change conduction to 1 and back to normal and it fixed the bug. I think after that the aero and reentry heat broke. Here is the topic with the bug if it helps: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/126664-MAJOR-Heating-Bug?p=2069825&viewfull=1#post2069825

EDIT: It seems that in the alt+F12 menu, the database used for physics was modulemanager.physics, instead of physics.cfg. Just loaded the physics.cfg file and everything seems to work, for now.

Problem is that every time I oad my save-game, modulemanager.physics is being used instead of physics.cfg and I have to manually load physics.cfg. How can I change modulemanager.physics to use the same parameters as physics.cfg?

I don't think we can help you Sheppard, you'd have to find which addon you're using that uses module manager to change the physics and remove it, as module manager won't just read the KSP physics.cfg, it'd need a specially made file.

You could try asking in the module manager thread or in modded support.
