I hope this will be more interesting than that "giant robot fighting" reality show from last year. I'd like to see this be an actual fight to total destruction rather than whatever weird rules they had for that game (which seemed completely scripted, btw). The one robot was demoing shooting paintballs for crying out loud.

I can't see how this will ever be actual combat since there's actually people inside. Unless both teams have agreed to do this thing on Sealand and nobody cares if they get maimed or killed.

Now, given that both these 'bots already exist, and the challenge is coming now…

…what on earth are they actually for?

Getting money from people with too much of it.

REAL STEEL is here, sort of.... Hey, if they were REAL robots, someone would be yelling "Skynet" all over the forums and advising us to run for our lives.

Thank heavens for small mercies.... a machine, manned, that fights is still super awesome.

DISCLAIMER: GIANT VEHICLES BATTLING IS STILL AWESOME

Aww... I always get suckered by "robot".

What defines the line for you? A normal printer is a robot too, as are many other things. If really depends or your definition.

Though most people's views of robots will be driven by Hollywoord and anime concepts, creating a fairly wild idea of how one should look and act.

It has nothing to do with Hollywood. A robot can be programmed and then left to do it's thing with little oversight.

Those things are as much a robot as your car is. You sit inside it and control it's every move. Just because it's a machine does not make it a "robot".

Edit: And yes, cars are becoming significantly more "robotic" but I'm sure you get the point.

This is exactly my point. A car is actually quite an advanced robot already, as it can perform a lot of simple and complicated functions automatically. It is, in quite a few senses, much more a robot than a factory robot is. You are just used to robots looking like robots because of the Hollywood bias most people have.

Mech is probably a better term, but FFS, FASA probably has a copyright on the word.

But... yeah. A vehicle that has legs instead of wheels. That still makes it really freaking cool though, no matter what you call it.

It doesn't have anything to do with "looking like a robot". They are nothing but vehicles/machines/contraptions/puppets. That's why they are not robots.

And like I said, yes, cars are becoming more robotic quite quickly, but I still think you easily understand the point, and it's really stretching to call your car a robot. The day you can sit in it and tell it where to go, then read a book, you can really call it a robot.

Are you two arguing about what a robot makes a robot?

I don't want to sound rude but this thread is not the right one for this kind of discussion.

It's very probable that the "fight" will be rigged just like wrestling shows. Those robots are just too expensive to just trash them. Also the MegaBot is powered by a gasoline engine. If it or the tank get damaged the robot could burn up with the two pilots inside.

So I wonder what kind of duel it will be. The Kuratas guys want to have a melee battle but the MegaBot has guns instead of arms. Therefore a real melee fight will be out of question. I can only think of a kind of paint ball gun battle. But that would be boring as both robots have really slow movement.

What do you expect to see?

Discussing whether or not the things in the original post in a thread entitled "The Age of Robots has come!" are robots is inappropriate in said thread?

Really, I'll just stop posting now because otherwise I'll get the thread locked with my response to that suggestion.

I was wondering that too, about how a paintball fight between a pair of slow, lumbering machines, could make for good entertainment. Maybe if the battlefield is large enough it would turn into something more strategic? Could they use an abandoned urban area with enough room to stomp around for half an hour?

Sounds like they DO want to be able to go all-out with this and avoid legal ramifications.

“Our dream is to have it in international waters, I’m not gonna lie. We would really love to have the fight on a ship or aircraft carrier in the middle of the pacific. That is our absolute favorite dream, we’ll see if that can happen,†he said. “If you know anyone in the Navy, tell them to give me a call.â€Â
