No heat effects on re entry

Recommended Posts

Hi, for some reason I cannot fathom I am not getting re entry effects. No plasma, no heating.

I get a lot of "Serialization depth limit exceeded at 'ThermalLink'. There may be an object composition cycle in one or more of your serialized classes."

at the start of my output.log which is linked below. I`ve not had that error before and I`ve no idea as to its meaning.

Any ideas?

Barring any suggestions I`ll extract another install, copy my save then reinstall all my mods.

It may well be that and I`ll see if that is the case but this is on a fresh copy that I made as the last one had a corrupted Physics.cfg and was overheating with no cause...

EDIT : Nope, my Physics.cfg is identical to a vanilla one

There may be an issue with KSP overwriting the Physics.cfg for some players, this can be prevented by setting the file to read-only, you can get the 1.0.4 Physics.cfg from the Linux thread.

Or KSP can be failing to find the Physics.cfg, this can happen if KSP is started via a shortcut, and depending on your permissions you may see a Physics.cfg in the same directory as the shortcut because KSP made a new one using (incorrect) internal values, or not if the folder is protected by data execution prevention.

So, get a new file, make it read-only, put it in the KSP folder, and run the KSP.exe directly.

Let me know if it works.

OK, that`s weird. Thanks Sal, that was the problem.

I usually use either CKAN or Jebretary to launch the game. Not using either of those and running the .exe directly makes the problem go away. Didn`t expect that.

Lets hope the file handling gets improved in the next update ;)

  • 4 weeks later...

This is not an unusual thing for software to do though, I have plenty of games that will not find their own data files if you run them from some other working directory, they expect the files to be on paths relative to the .exe

What the likes of ckan and Jebretary need to do is change to the folder that the user has specified that KSP is in, then run the .exe so the relative paths aren't broken.

Steam already does this, as do most shortcuts created by an installer, they add the path to the folder of the target executable so this issue is not noticed for most games.

But user made shortcuts or those made by 3rd party programs don't always do this, which results in "bugs" when data files cannot be found.

KSP's file handling is working, just don't break it.

Then lets hope CKAN and Jebretary have a look at their file handling and how they call KSP ;)

It`s not a hassle to load KSP directly.
