In the beginning, there was darkness

And Squad said, let there be mods. There were mods, and it was good.

What was the very first player mod made available?

Surely there is someone who was there...

It was like, a new engine, or something. Can't be bothered to find a link, since it WAS dug up a while ago, then locked. So it isn't on the last page

Oh, naturally. Though I didn't think to check that, I was under the impression the forums got wiped out at some point in the past.

The very first known mod was revealed on June 26, 2011. It was a "smallish solid booster stage" by Woo482 (who left the Forum years ago). He came on to the forums to ask how to successfully add a modded part to the 0.7.3 version of KSP: he had tried to add the model but the game froze up when he tried to load it. Here's a picture of Woo's mod, by the way.

HarvesteR's answer to Woo's question makes it pretty clear that this was the first modding attempt he had ever seen:

Nice!

I didn't expect to see a mod attempt this early on! This is great!

After some of HarvesteR's suggestions, Woo482's mod worked successfully. He never did release a download link though.

If you want to see the original thread, here's a link for you. It's a nice walk down memory lane, especially for modders. :)

[EDIT: The very first 'mod' with a download link available to players was just a file that could change the parachute's color. Here's a link to that as well.]

Hey, anyone know if that Chute Repainter mod is compatible with 1.0.4? :P

Nah, the Flea is clearly cloned off of the RT-10. There's nothing in KSP today that's similar to that booster.
That mini-booster actually looked pretty nice :) Precursor of the Flea SRB?

It almost sounds like you guys are discussing real hardware... "X is a derivative or Y", etc. :)

That's probably a joke, but you'd be surprised at how easy it is to make it work.

1) In the KSP 1.0.4 folder, go to GameData/Squad/Parts/Utility/parachuteMk1 and create the folder "textures" (without quotes). Paste the desired texture there.

2) Open a simple image viewer and either (a) rotate the desired texture 180 degrees, or (B) invert it both horizontally and vertically (The stock texture format has changed from PNG to DDS, which doesn't matter in itself, but it looks to have been inverted.)

3) Open "parachuteMk1.cfg" in a text editor add in the line "texture = parachutes_texMapblue.png" (or whatever you have named the image file, without quotes) close to the top (say, somewhere after author but before techRequired) then save and close.

I'm not certain this will work, as I've not tried it myself. If the texture looks all wrong, ignore step 2. (Repeat it to undo)

It should work though, despite the fact that both the mesh and texture formats used by the game have changed (mesh changed from DAE to MU, texture changed from a mixture of PNG and TGA to MBM to DDS), and the config files have been somewhat restructured. Not bad for a game which has been under constant development for 4 years, using numerous different versions of Unity.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
