Top Gun AI - The Official Tournament Thread

Recommended Posts

Just to let you know, I've renamed the 'Gauging interest' thread (Conclusion: interest has been gauged), and added new format ideas to the OP.

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/129182-Discussion-thread-BD-Armory-AI-tournaments

Please feel free to discuss. I'll see about writing up our first official set of rules, based on what we've worked out so far.

Sorry everyone that I haven't been making videos for the the tourney. My recording software broke. I am going to upload one of the videos now.

Btw, I still need new more music. I don't know if any of the suggested songs would fit in...

They'd all fit in great.

Danger Zone is a must, this whole challenge is based off of "Top Gun", Ace Combat Zero is a game about shooting planes, so the music is fitting...

I'm not sure what you're looking for.

From what I can tell, he's looking for exciting non-lyrical music.

You might want to look at old-school video game battle music, or movie scores or something. They can be very atmospheric, without lyrics getting in the way.

But absolutely do Danger Zone for the final championship round :D

I tried recording a few demo videos when I started this, but alas the audio (including commentary!) would cut out after 30 seconds or so for a period.

I just landed a new job and am speccing a Haswell-E monster* PC, which will eat and spit out video and audio like chewing gum :)

*Prices have come down a lot!

Well for starters, it's 21 tons.

I can't download it, but can you post pictures? Also, put the gear right behind the CoM.

For this format, download the Kerbal Engineer Redux mod to check your delta V - you don't need flight time much past 5 or 6 minutes, so cut the fuel. Also make sure you dump oxidiser and monoprop, you don't need them.

A .50 gun cannot fire at the same time as the GAU, which would always be your preferred fixed line of sight weapon, so dump it and use the points for ammo or missiles.

A lumbering beast of a plane with one countermeasure pod is a sitting duck in this format. It'll never get a shot off, it might not even get off the ground.

Wait for the next one please. Then you can be allowed entry.

EDIT: Also, the turrets have to be locked. They cannot have free motion. Turn down the swivel range please.

Nice! My personal favourite is the XMF. I´ve build my own plane, and the XMF is currently the only two-engine plane to be equal in 1 vs. 1(I´m currently at 4-4, and I will continue fighting).

I also think that maybe planes should be classified by engine number. Most of the 1-engine planes have no chance against the 2-engine ones (Falcon is a very good example here, the evolution in engine number made it extremly more competitive), and the 3-engine Hobgoblin is almost impossible to beat.

I initially thought that, then realised less engines require less fuel. It almost certainly means less drag. It does mean single-engine planes need to go with light-weight armament, but they can get in the air fast.

True, but it's much harder to get above that crucial TWR of 2.0+ with only a single engine. If tweakscale were allowed, it'd be a lot easier. But also a lot easier to exploit. From the testing I've done, two engine seems to be the way to go. I might try a 3-engine jet eventually, though.

When I entered the Falcon 1-A, I hadn't tested it against any of the other jets, so I really had no idea what I was getting into. I should be much more prepared for the next one :P

I´ll bet for the Blizzard. The Subat is too big to dodge missiles effectively. Now watching the video...

What did I win :)? 3 Whitewashes is really hard...

The satisfaction of a correct analysis and hypothesis :P

My older Blizzard has defeated previous versions of the Hobgoblin, 3 engines makes it fast but it was less maneuverable

Wait, I submitted my old Blizzards? RIP.

new bdarmory is out. All crafts need to be reoptimized!

Best to complete a tourney with the old version, then the next one can have our shiny new versions.

Dies it have radar etc? If so, missiles just got very interesting...

Yes it does, my fighter has been reoptimized. Faster, with both heat seeking and anti radar countermeasures, along with a radome. State of the art fighter.
