Looking for a coder for a small-sized project

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I'm decent with Sketchup and Sketchup is the easiest 3D modelling program out there so I'm not an expert 3D modeller or anything but I think I can pull of stock-level quality.

I have a mod concept with zero modding and or programming experience in KSP, though I have modded a few other games before so I'm not as green as a Kerbal.

For obvious reasons I wouldn't like to share what exactly I have in mind in public so let me know if you might be interested. Just being very honest here, I will need to learn quite a bit down the road so if my willingness to build on my existing skills to realize my (could be our :P) concept isn't enough motivation to co-operate with me, you should be warned in advance.

Some clues that may affect your decision on whether or not you'd like to be a part:

- It's a bit sci-fi ish.

- It's going to be a parts pack with new mechanics based on infrastructure building.

- It involves practically teleporting a ship from one point to another, though it's not entirely accurate.

- The parts are mostly going to require their own ships instead of being parts that can be attached to any ship and work just fine.

- Ships will have to equip parts of varying effectiveness to benefit from the transportation system.

- The transportation will be as automated as it can be, automatically transporting anything that fulfills the prerequisites.

Let me know!

You're going to have a heck of a time getting a volunteer with no info on precisely what you're considering building. Also if you're handling the modeling side of things, a few pics of your work would not be a bad idea.

(edit)

Also - general advice. Same as the tech startup world, there's no value in keeping stuff seekrit. It deprives you of early feedback, and at the end of the day, ideas are cheap. Execution is everything.

I understand, but I wanted to make sure the said execution is actually possible, and I wanted to make sure I wasn't underestimating what it would require, as I wouldn't want to promise people a mod I cannot deliver.

I haven't made any models regarding the mod yet, nor have I even fully finished conceptualizing all the details which isn't something I think I should do on my own.

Edit: So I'm not trying to keep anything secret for any reason other than not being sure if I can even do what I have in mind. ^^

If you're worried about shielding us from the heartbreak of hearing about a mod that never comes to fruition - don't worry about it. There's tons of mod ideas posted to the forum every day. I have a whole bookmark folder of ideas that I'd like to see implemented and could possibly do myself.. but I don't have the time, and they'd come behind features I want to add to my existing mod. I sleep 7-8 hours a day, unlike Roverdude. :)

You should be able to describe the mechanics of what you want without giving away the whole idea. "instantly transport a ship across the solar system" "click on a part, receive bacon" "snap together parts to form larger parts (AKA in-flight welding)" "upgrade parts using science/money/bacon" "make a static object on a planet" "make a story/adventure/quest"

If you're determined to keep it secret, you can PM me and I can a least give you a feasibility assessment, but I probably won't take on another project right now.

Well I now see how things work here, so I'll update the OP with more details as I was advised to. Though my goal was more to just save myself the embarrassment of doing the talk but not doing the work if it comes down to that.

Edit: You were pretty spot on with instantly transporting a ship across the solar system, but I guess that's already kind of a space travel trope.

That sounds a lot like ESLD Jump Beacons, or a Stargate mod (which is requested just about every 3 days). Obviously what ESLD does is feasible, since it does it. :)

If you wanted to make a proper Stargate mod (I'm guessing the DHD is the part you have to equip, and the Stargates are the separate ships), it wouldn't be a bad idea to start with ESLD and just change the parts out. ESLD is GPL2, so you can use it as a base, but of course then have to release your modified version as GPL2.
