I just launched a base to minmus, got it all the way there and tried to dock another module to it, only to find out I had the docking port on backwards. The reason this happened is because I did not check the engineer's report before launching. My suggestion is to have a configurable option that alerts the player of any possible craft mistakes in a popup window before launch, so that it is almost guaranteed not to happen

I need to second this. This happened so embarrassingly with my long range interplanetary craft that I risked editing the save to flip it around, which was super hard to do.

is this not the purpose of the "engineers report"? If you use that, you admit this would not have been a problem.

I spent X amount of time getting to Y location and realized I built my craft wrong. Despite the game already telling me I built the craft wrong, I blame the game for this.

This, to be honest there is only so much the game can do to correct human stupidity. Just learn from the mistake and move in.

It warns you if the docking port is attached to an uncontrollable assembly (i.e. Debris). That is the primary reason I do not want a popup for this, because there are many cases where you want that, and a constant pop up would be annoying (generally speaking in software development pop-ups are evil 90% of the time). For example, a Clamp-o-tron on a Mk 1-2 capsule with a Launch Escape System on top of it will throw a warning in the report but is a perfectly valid construction.
