Canadarm [WIP]

for stock MK3 Cargobay, Mike-NZ's OnePiece shuttle pack and the CSS

Canadarm.jpg?raw=true

Purpose: I had a hard time finding a somewhat realistic and working Canadarm for the Space Shuttle so hopefully this fills the gap

Features:

  • Camera in the effector for IVA use (needs RPM)
  • Effector uses a magnet (KAS) to grab stuff. This is not realistic but it give very steady performance without wobble. You can also pick up Jeb with the magnet :-)

How to use:

The mod adds an attachment node to the CSS, Onepiece and stock cargobay. This is where you should attach the Shoulder part. The shoulder part cannot be surface attached! The Canadarm uses IR for the moving parts and KAS for the effector magnet. You can create presets in the VAB (recommended). To "grab" stuff with the effector you have to enable the magnet. It is recommended to map this to an action group in the VAB. The arm and the magnet both use electrical power so keep this in mind when using the arm. There is a camera mounted in the effector wich you can use via Rasterpropmonitor. You can also use the supplied subassembly.

Dependencies:

Notes and Known Issues:

  • Underarm extend is moving inverted in the VAB, works correctly ingame
  • Models are still being worked on, black shadow lines on texture is being fixed

Download:

Coming soon:

  • High res textures

If you find any bugs/issues or have suggestions, let me know!

One question: can you build it with KIS? like, bring the thing up to a station and build it during EVA?

You mean the arm itself? If that is your question, no you cannot. What you want sounds like the Canadarm2. There is a mod called Kanadarm wich may be what you want. This is the Canadarm1 for the shuttle.

I know, I meant like attaching the arm base in a station already in orbit and then attach each section to it, to assemble the arm (that would be a fixed one like ERA or the one in Kibo instead of a mobile like Canadarm 2) during EVA

I'm gonna try and find out :)

just reporting that for some reason I can't select any part of the canadarm but the shoulder, that's the only part I can select, both in flight and in the VAB, therefore I can't use the magnet, I'll get a log here asap

EDIT: I can pick them from the part list though, but after that, if i release it, I can't select any part

EDIT 2: here's the log if it helps: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58212317/output_log%20%2811%29.txt

How about a little bit bigger preview? Hmmmm?

A preview of the arm or IVA? ;-)

Let me know how it works out. I think it may not work because the shoulder part is not surface attachable so KIS may have a problem with that.

The IVA please. I've already downloaded the arm and I can't wait to operate it from inside IVA mode like you do in the video.

On a side note, have you seen Alexustas' Props for IVA builders? Lots of very nice props for you to consider.

This is not the right topic for it but here you go. Its a pic of the front dashboard.

The ALCOR props indeed are very nice, only I want to create an as realistic as possible shuttle IVA so they don't fill the need. The props you see here are all working: Landing gear button and indicators, rcs buttons and indicators etc.

I'll edit it for surface-attaching, if that doesn't work or invoke the kraken there's always the small girder for node-attaching

Good luck whit this.

Many people have tried and failed making an ksp replica of the canada arm

That's a bit bleak don't you think? Kanadarm wasn't a bad one. And you can build any arm with IR. But this Canadarm pack looks to be a really great replica of the real thing. I say great job and go for it.

Bug fix for the click-through issue works perfectly! :D Just in time too, I am currently working on making my own ISS, with the help of Mike-NZ's ISS remake. I currently have the Zarya module in orbit, and I needed a canadarm to help me with the construction. I think I found it.

Why can't this be surface attachable? It should only be a quick edit of the .cfg, right?

EDIT: The shoulder mount node is rotated 90 degrees "nose down" from the standard orientation. Is this intentional, or is this a bug?

I will add a surface attachable shoulder. I would not recommend to use it though. I feel this arm without is much more stable than the other ones that are all completely surf attachable. No need to quicksave and load, almost no woble and no explosions.

But for all of you who want to kill Jebediah with this arm, I will update it soon with that extra part.

Possible bug report...

All attempts to attach the shoulder part to a radial attach node with KIS while on orbit have ended with the Kerbal attaching it to himself when taken straight from inventory... Any ideas why?

EDIT: Fixed that issue. Drop the part, THEN attach it.

That said, I found ANOTHER issue with on-orbit assembly of the arm...

As you can see, the arm seems to pivot around the center, not the intended joint. An arm assembled in the VAB did NOT have this issue, btw. Also, the arm extension, wrist, and end effector didn't have this issue either:

The parts in question have been returned to storage aboard the cargo tug that carried them up, and they'll be returned to the KSC until this bug can be fixed.
