So...what's up with KSP's folder structure?

After some shower thoughts I did a small research into KSP's folders and found out that some of them (5/14) are empty. As I started playing KSP in the fall of 2011 (and rediscovered it in the summer of 2013), I remember the horror known as Parts folder and all the files from mods dumped there. Story is now little different but my question remains: Squad, why are there empty folders?

All of that got moved to GameData so it's basically an artifact of older versions. It still hasn't been cleaned up but it's harmless. Maybe a future version will remove them, who knows?

^^ That. They're the vestigial remains of how KSP handled mods before everything was concentrated in Gamedata. Not really needed anymore, hopefully they'll be removed at some point as it can confuse newbies trying to install mods.

I have heard that removing them can cause issues but I haven't tested it myself.

If the folders are empty, you can remove them without issue (I like to remove them and nothing terrible happens), but the game will add them back in.

Those folders are still checked for addons as really old addons used that folder structure.

I'm sure that you could create a file with Linux to fool the game into thinking the folders are there, like that Kindle ads bug...

*nix varieties can have symlinks to /dev/null if you're so inclined but then you're left with symlinks instead of empty directories. Really, it's just a cosmetic issue.
