Dill Pickles And Popcorn

Popping stove popped popcorn is a favorite treat of mine.

The kernels are kept in the freezer to remain desiccated.

Just simmer in oil on low heat to lightly toast.

The smell of corn roasting should develop.

Place a lid over the pan and increase the temperature slightly.

The popping should be quick and steady.

The popping is complete when you shake the pan any hear only a few non-popped kernels.

If the kernels are too damp the popcorn will be less puffed and chewy and stick in your teeth.

This means the simmer time was too short.

Placing chewy popcorn in a warm oven (110 C) can help to dry out the popcorn and become crunchy and tasty.

Butter that is slightly browned (Maillard reaction) has excess water removed and offers complex overtones.

The best is combining dill pickles with popcorn.

The vinegar and dill go delightfully well with the buttery popcorn.

After completing this recipe I offered my nurse some of this tasty treat.

She said: "Eeeuuuww. Pickles and popcorn?!?"

Now everyone has an opinion and I enjoy that diversity but have to draw the line at hypocrisy.

She was snaking from a bag of dill flavored rice chip.

Huh, so now we're posting recipes? Well, here's a couple. The first is a soup I developed for general use just about a week ago and the other is an old favourite of mine.

Soup:

You're gonna wanna find a can of tomato soup, a can of spam, and onion, preferably a sweet onion, and any spices you might want to add. I tried corn also but it sunk to the bottom and it didn't go good with everything else. Cube and fry up the spam, or just leave it as-is, but it'll taste better if fried. Prep the tomato soup with the standard "add 1 can of water to contents" prep. Cut the onion into medium-small pieces. Add the spam and onion to the tomato and cook it until you think it's done. Eat it hot or warm, don't eat it cold.

Favourite:

Combine a BIG can of pork and beans, a pack of hot dogs cut into medallions, and a bottle of ketchup together into a glass baking dish. Mix it till it's "right". Cover and cook at 350 F for 45-60 mins.

Yes, I'm notorious for not measuring things. I start pouring and quit when it feels right.

Huh, so now we're posting recipes?

It was not my intention for this to be a recipe nook. But why not.

Recipes that make others go "Eeeuuuww" but are way too delicious.

That title seems to fit the bill.

So here is another entry:

  • Hot dog, frankfurter, tube steak call them what you want
  • Just cook them ( I prefer boiling for this recipe)
  • Spread some peanut butter on the bun
  • Enjoy

I have not had this delectable college campus dinner in quite some time and look there is a package of Schneiders Red Hots sitting in the fridge and a big jar of Kraft peanut butter in the pantry.

Pepperoni pizza and sour patch kids (the candy)... Recommend you add the candy on top right before pulling the pizza from the oven if made at home, or ASAP if delivery so they melt just slightly but not too much.

The flavor is a lot like pineapple on your pizza, but strangely different.

The recipe for sour patch and pizza made my nurse's nurse go "Eeeuuuww".

I was referring to this thread and was talking about peanut butter and hot dogs.

My nurse says she likes peanut butter and sweet onion sandwiches.

The odd thing was the nurse for my nurse also enjoys peanut butter and sweet onion sandwiches.

P.S.

Almost forgot, I am now having lunch made up of PB and Red Hots. Tasty!

Nothing spectacular, but...

For a snack -

Diced apples and mayonnaise.

Sliced bananas with some orange juice.

For the grill -

Hot dogs or cheese infused brauts, grilled, on a potato-bread hot dog bun, with plain or cinnamon applesauce... yum!

I really like making snack mixes with peanuts or simply jazzing up peanuts:

Aviator's Mix:

1 part peanuts (without the shell works the best)

2 parts salted mini pretzels

Enjoy with a Canada Dry, Segram's, Vernors or any other type of Ginger flavoured soda on the rocks.

Elephantine Delight: (Despite it's large natured name the recipe is simple)

1 Parts Peanuts

2 Parts Rasins

Hell's Nuts (Warning this recipe is sinfully habit forming and apocalyptically spicy :P)

1 Parts Peanuts

Couple dashes of Tabasco sauce or any other liquid hot sauce, (please avoid Sriracha or Gochujang (Korean chili paste)

Sprinkle with Red Pepper flakes or Cayenne Pepper.

I also have a pretty good sandwich recipe:

I call it "The Capone"

2 Slices Italian bread (Toasting is optional)

Salami (preferably sliced)

Dijon or German-Style Mustard

Olives (preferably green or black (pitted)

Giardiniera (Pickled Bell pepper, celery, carrot, cauliflower, gherkins, pepperocini) (or just pepperocinis)

Mozzarella and/or Provolone Cheese

Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil.

Sprinkle with Red pepper flakes, salt and black pepper.

Optional ingredients:

Capers

Pesto

Here's my other less demanding Sandwich Recipe

This one I call The Amalfi

2 Slices of Really crusty Italian Bread

Couple slices of Genoa or Hard Salami (Or both)

Extra Virgin Olive Oil (If you can find it garlic infused works the best, but regular non-infused works too)

Provolone or Mozzarella Cheese (the sliced kind)

Mayonnaise (Preferably the stuff that comes in a squeeze bottle for easy application)

Instructions:

Drizzle your bread with the oil not to much or the bread will become saturated (Unless you really like the taste of Olive Oil )

Place your salami down on one of the slices of bread making sure to keep the salami relatively flat on the bread

Apply the mayonnaise making sure that it is not too much otherwise it will overpower the taste of the oiled bread salami and cheese also it makes for a less messy sandwich.

Add the cheese also keeping it relatively flat on the bread

Top with the other slice of bread and your done.

Since summer is around the corner... A quick stew-

Cut up some zucchini, yellow squash, and an onion and cook on low in a pot, covered, with 1/2 stick butter until a bit tender

fry up some proper deli sausage (around here there is a variety with parsley and cheese that works well), cut up and add to the veggies- if you are feeling saucy throw in some of the fat leftover from cooking it.

add a can or two of tomatoes with green chilis and heat thoroughly, and enjoy!

Edit: another summer recipe:

Get a big bone-in pork shoulder (aka butt)

make a rub using salt, black pepper, onion and garlic powder, paprika, brown sugar, and mustard powder (and cayenne if you so choose) and cover the slab-o-meat with it.

Smoke it over hickory chips for about an hour-hour and a half* I usually do it until I run out of chips/coals die out

transfer to a crock pot, a light splash of red wine or apple cider vinegar over the top doesn't hurt to break it down, until the smell drives you insane (actually until it comes apart easily and the bone pulls out clean).

Feel free to fry up leftovers with some potatoes.

*a guy who was apparently a competitive food person said it's pointless to smoke for any longer

HOLD UP

Is this a test of this comic?

LOL. I sometimes wonder if this whole game/forum isn't some weird social experiment by Randall Munroe. What can you say about chocolate-covered manhole covers?

When I was a kid I used to like pound cake dipped in root beer. My dad worked as a sanitation supervisor in a bakery, one of his perks was he got to take home as much day-old baked goods as he could carry, so we had an almost limitless supply of day-old pound cake to eat/grow tired of/experiment with. Cutting it into fingers and dipping it in root beer turned out to be my favorite atrocity. (My brother and I were also the most popular kids in the lunchroom, since we each brought an entire box of cookies to school every day to share.)

Makes me think of a recipe for North Carolina-Style Barbecue, Of course down here in North Carolina the meat is usually chopped and served with coleslaw and hushpuppies (which reminds me of cornballs from the sitcom Arrested Development.)
