Discussing SimpleRockets

I guess, but no more so than KSP "stole" the general idea from Orbiter.

The gaming universe would be very, very dull if the first instance of a game in a genre had to be the last one.

Truth had been spoken!

Yeah, I'm going to be little more than a +1, but think about all the games out there with similar mechanics and similar theme. For example, First Person Shooters -- they're a dime a dozen, yet there's enough subtlety between each that you can ask any gamer what his or her favorite is and they'll nail which one and why.

Personally, I hope KSP opens up the space exploration game market enough to attract studios with larger production values. I don't wish for Squad to go out of business (and I doubt they will) but think of a KSP-inspired title made by a huge team of artists and developers. Imagine "Space Engine" level graphics combined with KSP's lego-style rocket building. I'm excited to see what competition can bring to the table, and I'll have my credit card ready.

I've played both SimpleRockets (on my phone) and KSP for a while. I can tell you that the devs themselves say they owe a LOT to KSP (they even encouraged players of SR to check it out). Plus, it might encourage more competition and open up this market...

Saying SimpleRockets is a ripoff of KSP is like saying Terraria is a ripoff of Minecraft. They have the same theme and a few high-level gameplay similarities, but that's about it.

If you want to talk about ripoffs, take a look at how similar most of the FPS games from a given time period tend to look. Far more similarities there than a complex 3D space flight sandbox vs a highly simplified 2D mobile port.

This isn't a ripoff, compared to the usual 'inspirations' simple rockets is actually quite original. It takes the idea of building rockets, which btw is a quiet close ripoff of real space programs, and uses it for a game that's simpler and more marketed to mobile devices.

An in App advertisement in SimpleRockets is what led me to buy KSP. So I'd say SimpleRockets is helping KSP.

This. They clearly say the game is inspired by KSP and link to the KSP site from the game.

For that matter, Squad doesn't own Keplerian orbital mechanics or other rocket science, or modular construction, either.

Besides, it's not like it's competing with KSP in the mobile space. (Yet? Are we still announcing a new port every week?)

Without having played it, I'd still say that SimpleRockets fills a niche that KSP cannot, even if it is clearly a spiritual successor of sorts. KSP is a resource-intensive game, so making a KSP Light that can run on a phone is a good idea.
