Editor Tool: PLUCK

Recommended Posts

The current "Forced Symmetry" thing in the editor makes me want to kick a Kerbal in his Mystery Goo Container.

let's say you have a quad-adapter, and you want to place 2 RAPIERs and 2 Whiplash engines on it, switching to Mirror mode seems like an obvious choice, until you realize that the engines won't be placed on something that requires radial mode. OK, fine. radial mode activated, you now have 4 RAPIERs and ZERO whiplashes.

Enter the new tool: PLUCK.

using this tool would let you pluck single parts off of your vessel without checking for symmetry, leaving the other parts in tact.

now you can place individual Whiplashes where the RAPIERs were and not worry about symmetry or engine grouping, and still have the action groups work as if they were symmetrical.

Lol, "Pluck". Interesting name, however what you really need is a Strip Symmetry gizmo (yes, we all know this is a mod, I know someone is about to post "that's a mod!", that's beside the point, it should be stock)

Due to the way the hierarchy works, you can't remove a single part from symmetry without removing symmetry so stripping symmetry is really what you are asking for anyway. Once it's gone, no need for extra tools, you can just pick it up and throw it away.

...which means that you'd have saved time by just placing all 4 engines singly.

In his example, yes. However, it's not always that simple. That works if you are placing it directly on a node, but if you aren't or have done a fair amount of moving stuff around with the gizmos to get it in the perfect spot, then placing them single makes it harder.

there was for an older version of KSP a mod called stripsymmetry that this it with a key-binding. It is not up-to date and I couldn't find any forum thread so here is the link to its page at kerbal stuff

StripSymmetry

(hey, maybe you could make this a mod yourself using the code from this mod.)

I however think that that pluck button will be a way more understandeble idea than a key binding.

True, but I've always gotten by with placing things with 2- or 3- symmetry when I wanted - for example - 6 or 12 similar stacks that - for whatever reason - I can't tweak the way I want them after I've added them with symmetry.

The classic example is asparagus staging, which is fallen out of favor since 1.0 but I still use sometimes. I've always just added the radial stacks 2 at a time with 2-symmetry and never even considered trying to add 6 at once and then split them later. Gizmos and snapping makes doing it even easier now actually, because your stacks can always be exactly the same height without much fuss.
