FAR Fighter Challenge BD Armoury AI: 2!!

So here is a new problem I'm having. My new plane design can pull about 19g or so on a turn. The problem is that the wings are transferring so much stress to the fuselage that the structural fuel tank is exploding. Since you can't change the mass/strength of fuselage parts, what do you do?

Don't turn so hard. Nothing else you can do, I get structural failures on tanks all the time. There is only so much strutting you can do, you just have to accept that there are limits :P

For some reason I get more structural failures than anyone else too, it looks like. This new D-10d is exploding 40% of the time.

Getting seriously pissed off with the AI not recognising the plane doesn't actually have airbrakes. That thing works very well, half the time even works as a proper energy fighter, until the AI decides to just hang around waiting to be shot because for some reason it wants to waste momentum with airbrakes instead of using it to climb.

Yah that's what I thought. I'm going down the same general road you are with large wing surfaces. This keeps the Q value low, but since the wings are so large the total stress on them is HUGE. I suspect that i've strengthened the wings to to point where they will not fail due to stress, so the tanks they are attached to rip instead.

so it can get added to the fight list. I added it to the playlist also.

Did my plane even have a pilot in that fight? could have had a first strike missile attack, then it was in a perfect position to shoot the D-10 from behind, but nope had to go turn away and give the D-10 an ideal position. And then just flew circles with the idea that that was some sort of evasive action. I think I might wait for AI improvements at this point.

@The Optimist: rightclick control surfaces to assign just the movement you want for each control ( don't just shove the sliders all the way left, that will set them all negative ), and then hit "k" over each control to set up Dynamic Deflection. If you fly a plane around with the FAR flight data window open it will show you dynamic pressure, which is the left side of the dynamic deflection entries.

I found a workaround (kind of) for the changes of settings in FAR after fights. If you go back to the hangar and reload the plane from the save, the settings goes back to where they were before the fight.

Also @The Optimist: I recon you should loose the small engines at the bottom of the plane as the rules states "Engines are limited to turbojets/turboramjets"

Yeah, that's something FAR's been doing for ages; I can't duplicate it reliably so no bug report was ever filed. You want to do it every time you make a major change to the craft, too - save->reload->check derivatives.

Good to know i'm not the only one with the problem then. Now working on an unstable, but still stable, plane that can compete with the D-10d and others...

Two falling apart and one shooting itself, I'd have won the title back without firing a shot :)

This was a lovely fight though, all swooping around & dramatic reversals ( and occasional stupid AI ).

Would kinda like to see some other folks trial fights if they're getting close to parity. Really must find out why my planes are so reluctant to shoot though :S

I'm getting kills, if that's what your asking, mostly by missile though, and the random lucky potshot ( a 46 seconds kill :) ). But not nearly enough times yet, maybe one in three. The secret lies in making the plane unstable, but still stable enought. CoL just infront of CoW and low drag seems to be the thing, but it's going to be a one-trick-pony i'm afraid.

Must get fraps.

CoL shifts forwards as you slow down, and you can also trim using DD & surfaces ( I explained that idea somewhere in the last thread ). A few problems come up when you get one shot off, mind - also when you stall.The more wing sweep you have the higher AoA you can pull, but you'll get more drag too so the shape really depends on TWR ( and here we get murdered by the limits of stock parts ). I'm attempting something different at the moment the AI is generally losing fights by being mindbogglingly dumb.

MSI Afterburner has vidcap apparently, as well as one of the old ( free ) Radeon tools. OBS works as a last resort.

I thought my plane, the GG HRF-12 were up next... I know it's going to be smashed to bits but... (and yeah, right-click and save as)

Wouldn't bet on that if I was running them:

( it was in trouble until the D-10 ripped it's wings off, yes :P )

Edit: in fact if it had been an actual match, it would have won 2/1.

Did not have a happy time against this. Did make it run out of ammo killing it once though..
