FAR Fighter Challenge BD Armoury AI: 2!!

Recommended Posts

I have to test making more adjustments to the DD then, and just because i mentioned it earlier i had a plane hit 27G at least when i tested it :) Ah, well.

And i'm having issues with getting a good fight with the D-10d too, seeing as if it doesn't shoot it self to bits, it breaks itself apart or get in the way of a missile.

The D-10 I have is the one with the incredible exploding missile rails. An issue I've encountered too. Seems to happen when you mount two sidewinders on a single rail.

The frustrating part of flying against the D-10 is it's terrible flight performance. It manages to stall out and spin at just the right moments and then recover below the min altitude so when my plane turns and goes after it, it breaks off before taking the shot. Then the D-10 flys back up, gets behind, and when my plane works around to getting a shot the D-10 stalls out below the min altitude again.

I don't know how you did it Van. but you've built a monster.

That's definitely a loss for the one that shot itself :P would imagine one of the primary responsibilities for a designer is to build something that doesn't shoot itself down. I'm not quite sure what to do if it shoots the engine off the other plane and *then* shoots itself as just happened, I guess they're definitely both out of combat at the same time... lucky glider who got away with a rerun.

Magnavox: the D-10d is linked in post 3 ( actually both are ) - the d model is the main link. It doesn't have exploding rails, it just loves ramming it's own missiles. I'm a little scared at what on earth Dwerto is going to produce next, both from insanely competent combat and comical moments.

Edit: fixed the link in post 3, why was it still pointing at the D-8...

Also I should say as long is it's not a game glitch, no rerun. I've had planes explode & then the game's crashed, so I'm a bit wary of blaming the plane at that point. Usually I run one or two combats to get all the mods settled in before I do anything.

I'll have to look into that sometime :)

The Illusion V is still extremely reluctant to turn, and the weapon manager isn't set up for 360deg FOV. The P-48K is better, but I don't think it's turning how you expect it to ( and the AI hasn't been set up legally ). I wrote a checklist a couple of pages back.

I think we may want to look at requiring radar, or these fights can get stuck in a "who's gonna run out of fuel circling first" loop. Unfortunately I can't see a way to turn it on from staging :S

I manually turn on the radome and radar warning tracker before flights. Not sure if that's related to this.

Right, that will help - providing the plane has a radar! up to you if you want to make it a requirement.

What's that feeling you get when you yank your current craft you've spent hours & hours tuning apart, throw some bits in and the resultant creation runs rings around it straight away when it's not even really sure how to fly? :S

Hmm, I may consider this.

Okay, I'll put it to a vote!

Vote A if radomes should be required.

Vote B if it should be up to the builder!

Not gonna make a poll, I don't know how to make one.

I'm going to vote A, because I run fights. It's that or I turn your pilot off, fly your plane at the other one & leave it when I feel like it. It's not been a problem until we've had more manoeverable and rather slower climbing craft which get out of visual range & stay there.

I vote B, but I think it's foolish to not have one and is therefore a self correcting problem.

I thought of this weeks ago, but didn't say anything as I thought it would fix itself.

@Van: This problem I have all the time. The only issue I have is that the resultant junk plane still won't beat the D-10 Grrr.

Well, it's kinda not self correcting, other than if there's a plane with a radar & one without and they're not merging, I'll turn the radar on & then get in the other one and fly it straight towards the first one, and only put the pilot on when it's 3km away. That's quite spectacularily irritating to do, too :P and hey you just made the fight coordinator cover for your 1/3d tonne saved.

This thing can definitely beat the D-10. I'm kinda tempted to see if it can beat the Swallow & D-10 at the same time...

Edit: and it won, because the D-10 shot itself, blew up and the Swallow flew into the mess. Most amused. It can't handle a pair of Swallows, but that is a bit unfair.

I vote B as I don't believe in the current implementation of rockets and I never saw the advantage of having a radome for gunfights.

I suppose I should make it clear: it's not about gunfights, it's about both planes taking off and going in circles 5km apart and never making it into visual range. They'll just do that until they run out of fuel. It wasn't a problem when we were building twin engined heavy things because they basically took off vertically and charged at each other - the current lightweights take off at an angle, so they're 5-6km apart by the time they get to fighting height, and that's outside the weapon manager's max range. Radar range is whatever BDA's max is set at ( so 22.5km at the moment ), which is plenty.

If there's two planes doing that & only one has a radar, I'd be quite tempted to DQ the other one... whoever did that strapped a bunch of generally useless mass on their craft just to ensure a fight, and the other left it hoping someone would correct the problem for them. If you can build a plane without a radar that'll guarantee to turn & fight, that's fine. I think the Top Gun people ( same as us, but no FAR ) require radar fitted just because of this.

How we set fights up:

  • Launch champion, or random contender
  • Drive it ( or now move it with Baha's new plugin ) off the side of the runway 90 deg to the spawn point, and turn it to 270 deg heading. Prep it for launch
  • Save game ( or at least I do ) as a named quicksave
  • Launch the challenger, prep it for takeoff, and hopefully just changing group should fire both of them off. Otherwise you have to manually take one off standby which should poke them both into life

Try that with say, Swallow vs something equally small, and if you don't turn the radar on they'll just buzz around until bingo.

I vote, A.

You should HAVE to have a radar of some type on that aircraft. I mean how many successful fighters in the modern world dont have radars? I can answer that, ZERO!

The saying goes, he who sees first, shoots first, and wins!

This has been shown to be true most cases in this challenge also. Those that can fire first usually end up at the top. And honestly I dont see what is so bad about having a radar on the aircraft, it doesnt weigh that much and it can be used to balance the airframe if you do it right.

Never happened in my tests - but I never tried running two craft without radar against each other. I do buy the argument, though, that it is unfair to rely on the opponent to take care of initiating the fight with his radar while saving the weight yourself. So I change my vote to A.

Here is my submission, with radar: The K-191. Yes, I made 168 models since the K-22 until I had something that can beat d-10 and Swallow... let's hope it doesn't break up.

EDIT: I just uploaded the right version - the one on DropBox until now had wrong DD settings. Sorry for that.
