RCS thrusters not responding to SHIFT and CTRL

Recommended Posts

Hey, I've landed my little RCS jumper down on Minimus, but the RCS thrusters will not respond to SHIFT and CTRL to move me vertically. They only respond to WASD to rotate around. This is kind of a problem, as now I cannot move anywhere. I was licky to even get it off the lander in one piece.

SHIFT and CTRL still move the throttle needle up and down, even in docking mode. But the RCS thrusters do nothing.

Anybody know why this is happening?

RCS thrusters are special. They aren't throttled-- you don't throttle them up and down, they ignore Z / X / Shift / Ctrl. They're on when you hold down the thrust key, off when you let go.

The WASD keys are for rotation. If you want to thrust laterally, use HNIJKL (H = forward, N = backward, IJKL = the various lateral directions).

(There's also a type of monopropellant-fueled engine that is throttleable, but that's not what you're dealing with here so I don't go into details.)

Ctrl and Shift work just fine for me in docking mode put a pod with rcs fuel and blocks and nothing else, put it in docking mode and shift fires the rcs thrusters down to raise my pod, ctrl the opposite. I don't have mechjeb.

Control and shift are for thrusters, wasd for rotation not motion. JKLI are for translation which moves you front back up down and left right, (you can adjust your rotation with wasd, but they wont move you anywhere ), and H/N are like shift and control for rcs thrusters respectively. This is useful because if you need to make quick and light adjustments, you can just propell yourself backwards instead of rotating around and burning.

You should really never use docking mode, as regular mode works fine. But you do you.

  • I: Translate up
  • K: Translate down
  • J: Translate left
  • L: Translate right
  • H: Translate forwards
  • N: Translate backwards
