Aircraft Touchdown "smoke" effect

Columbia

Recommended Posts

You know how aircraft touch down on runways and their tires smoke a bit, like this?

Would it be possible for a mod to be made for aircraft to have a similar effect when landing? Especially when coupled with tire screeches (In CollisionFX, for example), it could add a lot to the experience.

Thanks!

I seem to remember having a mod that did this once. I thought CollisionFX did actually, it's been a long time since I used that mod though. I got sick of an EVA Kerbal causing sparks everytime he bumped a craft lol.

I love the idea though, and with SmokeScreen it certainly should be possible.

Thanks, CollisionFX adds the touchdown sound but not smoke. In fact, it's the mod that sort of gave me the idea.

It doesn't seem to display in the GIF in the page, but I'll try.

It's part of FSwheel IIRC.

Does it require the entire Firespitter mod that it's part of, or just the plugin, since FSWheel is part of Firespitter?

Thanks!

Firespitter/Adjustable Landing Gear sort of does it but it looks terrible. It looks more like white vanishing skid marks than smoke like you see in the image above. I'm certain someone can do better than that. Maybe Felger has just spoiled me with Real Plume, but I bet if he were willing he could do much better.

I'm pretty sure that the collisionFX mod does this:

It doesn't, it adds screeching effects and sounds for parts sliding across the ground, and wheels aren't one of them, Sorry.

Alright, I'll try it first, then come back with results.

Thanks!

So I developed an impromptu aircraft with KAX parts, which you'd probably imagine would need Firespitter, and it doesn't have effect.

I'll try it next with the whole mod.

Firespitter doesn't automatically add it's FSWheel module to the stock landing gear. Try Adjustable landing gear, it uses FSWheel (actually it uses a slightly modified FSWheel, but close enough). Otherwise you will have to devise a module manager patch, and since FSWheel is more than just the visual and sound effects, that might be complicated.

Also, I'm not sure the Firespitter plugin by itself would do it anyway. Adjustable landing gear includes it's smoke particle texture, so Firespitter would at the very least need the whole plugin to include that on the stock wheels.

Well, I tested it, other than from having pretty disappointing effects, it only works on the Adjustable Landing Gear parts. Also, is there any way that it could become an individual mod?

Thanks!

Also, is there any way FSWheel could be added individually? It's quite burdenous to add a bunch of parts thataren't going to be used.

It can but you have to include the entire wheel behavior, you can't include the FX individually. I'd rather see a standalone mod that makes use of smokescreen but I don't know how to do it.

Yes, this. I also feel a standalone mod is good enough.

Anyone who has been able to do this, other than the mentioned Firespitter?

I've duplicated your request here. This mod has (had, they are currently broken) dust effects added when rolling across the unpaved land. If the author is willing, they could be shortened and made white for touchdown effects on pavement (he already has them white on snow, so I know that half can be done).

A little late, but, thanks!

We'll see how the author responds.

I have been under the impression (self-induced impression may I add) that wheel smoke & wheels that actually spin will be coming along in 1.1 when they introduced reworked wheels. I believe that the small landing gear does spin wheels, but med and large landing gear's wheels don't spin. They should also get their own affixed lights like small landing gear.

Working wheels are coming, it is unclear if that will include visual effects.
