Did I just destroy 2 weeks of work?

Recommended Posts

I accidentally loaded the wrong quick save in career mode that sent me back about 2 weeks - now my persistent.sfs file is the same and there don't seem to be any other files more current. Are there not any auto-save files anywhere that I can load? I see lots of backup saves in sandbox mode but none in career - are they hidden somewhere or am I just screwed? was about to launch my first Duna mission but now I don't have the parts- might have to edit the save file to get back to good - any tips?

Ouch.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but yeah, you're screwed. The only save files are the ones in the save directory. It's a good habit to make frequent named saves so that you have multiple revert options in case of PIBKAC.

Also, for future reference: be aware that the game always immediately does an automatic save to persistent.sfs whenever you switch back to KSC. So if you ever have an oh-crap moment when you need to make-it-didn't-happen, and you realize immediately that you goofed, the thing to do is to switch out of KSP immediately and just kill the process, then restart the game. You ought to have a reasonable chance of dodging the bullet.

About the only advice I can offer is to use a cheat to give yourself a chunk of cash and/or science to make up the two weeks.

Really sorry to hear, wish I had something better to offer.

As usual F5 is your friend. Before important, difficult and/or risky events it's always best to make a named quick-save with Alt + F5. (Load a named save with Alt + F9 instead of the regular F9.)

Kerbal Alarm Clock is not only useful to keep track of multiple missions it also makes saves when switching vessels. This feature can really save your bacon.

I can recommend [thread=105399]Nereid's S.A.V.E.[/thread] Won't help you now, but may avoid something similar in the future.

This, just beware if you use a ship saving mod ( like Craft History ) it can start taking a very long time to save. KAC also makes saves on alarms, I think.

As was said, if you do that again just Alt-F4 *immediately* before it has a chance to autosave.

What about F9'ing it? I thought those quicksaves were different (I've been able to load the game, hit F9 and go to a position I was at before I loaded the game) and even if you load some other file and mess up your saves unless you hit F5 again shouldn't F9 take you back to the last F5-quicksave you made?

Or does loading a save overwrite that?

I think the issue is that the OP hasn't been in the habit of saving frequently, so that the most recent save was a couple of weeks old. Thus, F9ing caused the problem by erasing all his progress since the save.

The solution is to save frequently, and also to make named quicksaves.instead of just plain vanilla F5, so that there are multiple options in case of catastrophe.

Aha, I see what you mean. I figured that, even if he doesn't save (through the main menu save/alt+F5), he still quicksaved in-flight using F5 before doing something important like landing or something so that if he messed up royally he wouldn't have to worry too much about it.

Snark you've nailed it again. Lesson learned, I now have copious named quick-saves. Just wish all those auto-saves were somehow accessible. Thanks everyone for all the great advice - always learn a lot from this forum and really appreciate how willing everyone is to help out. I ended up having to edit myself some science and funds - didn't lose too much besides some grinding away at contracts and science. Duna mission is back on schedule!

I ended up having to edit myself some science and funds ...

Next lesson:

You don't need to edit your save to add/subtract funds, science or reputation. In the space centre screen press and hold Alt + F12 (you'll know when it's long enough).
