Joystick recommendation (and avoidance) thread

You should consider the number of Axis. In particular, stick rotation is extremely convenient in KSP because you can assign it to ship rotation. This exclude some of the joysticks adviced in this thread, in particular CH joysticks I think.

Since this thread is up now, I'll throw a question out here.

So, I play in Linux (64bit, Ubuntu 12.04 right now although I will be migrating to 14.04 soon). I have been looking at the Thrustmaster T-16000M and Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. I cannot find any clear, understandable (to me) information about their compatibility with Linux though. So if you have either and use it with Linux (any flavor) please tell me how hard was it to get work.

Hi all,

has there been any progress on the joystick issue?

I play KSP on Linux and with starting using some mods, that make things more realistic, it strongly is recommended not to push on-off keys, but to smoothly control the launches and maneuvers.

I find a gamepad to be better for this sort of thing than a joystick. I use a PS3-type controller with two analogue sticks, a D-pad and four shoulder buttons. My control layout is thus:

Left stick- pitch, yaw

Right stick- translate forward/aft, roll

D-pad- translate up/down, translate left/right. Also assigned to rover wheel forward/back and steering.

L2/R2- reduce/increase thrust

L1/R1- cut/full thrust (L1 also assigned to brakes)

Square button- SAS

Circle button- RCS

X button- staging

Triangle button- Map view

Start- lights

Select- landing gear

Having pitch/yaw on one stick makes the most sense for rockets, and works well enough for aircraft. Plus, you can fly the ship one-handed (to activate action groups etc on the keyboard or to use the mouse) without a significant loss of control.

For translation, on/off control of up/down/left/right is less of an issue, and you still have control over the roll axis on the right stick for situations where this matters. I used the D-pad for rover controls as well, as you can just switch off RCS to prevent interference.

It's not likely to get fixed until 1.1 unfortunately.

In my experiance the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro has fantastic ergonomics but sadly isn't built well and will start wearing out after a while (especially the yaw) :(. My recommendation would be the Thrustmaster T16,000m which has just been rock solid ever since I bought it. The hall effect sensor it uses is also super accurate. :)

I have used up two Logitech Extreme 3D Pro that would progressively become less accurate. However, bear in mind that it is a comparatively cheap joystick to replace.

I think the T16,000m costs about the same and is a much better stick overall.

I just got my CH products fighterstick, pro throttle, and pro pedals working correctly. It's so awesome. And I have a ton of buttons I can map!

hint: use mapped mode, and switch the axes of the pedals so they are on a different set than the other pieces, and it works great!

I'm pretty happy with my Mad Catz CYBORG V1.

I play sims in an unusual way by holding the stick in my left hand (even though I'm right-handed) and the mouse in my right hand to look around. It's symmetric so it's great for that kind of thing. My previous was Predator XThrust, or sth like that. It's swivel wore off pretty quick and dead zone got enormous. Also the shape wasn't very handy (A PUN! HAH!) for lefties.

Got it for some silly price below 100PLN, which is about $25, if I'm not mistaken. Edited by Veeltch

Completely happy with my new Logitech Extreme 3d Pro in linux. As a side note, the Advanced fly-by wire mod makes joysticks configurable in game without having to go back and forth with the settings in game, as well as a really clear way to map everything out. It also lets you configure the throttle as an axis so it's got that going for it, which is nice.

Can you use the Hat? I can't seem to get KSP to detect the hat buttons

Any love for steering wheels? I have a logitech 3d pro stick but it didnt give the right feel for driving trains and trucks.

I use a mc2 xbox madcatz wheel
Works great for KSP even lets me modify trains to turn a full 47 degrees at low speed for shunting and yard operations

Works nicely for any truck too.. Using pedals for forward and back... Had a comfortable 80km drive in a KSC electric cargo truck the otherday... Enjoyed it very much Edited by Overland

I've been using a Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X, been very happy with it. It's a little plasticky, creaks a tiny bit, but otherwise it's a fine stick for ~€65, especially considering the crazy money you could drop on a warthog or the like.

I'm jealous of all those fancy joysticks, but there's no way I'm going to re-learn how to fly after 1500 hours with my clunky old generic Nintendo-type game controller!

Throttle up/down is on the left trigger buttons, toggle RCS and SAS is the right trigger buttons. Reversing sides for right-handers would actually work better, because the HAT controller is easier to reach with your non-dominant hand that way. Besides the fact that I’m more dexterous on the stick with my thumb than with my wrist, it also allows me to use both hands in a way that typical throttle/stick combos don’t allow. For new players, I would suggest trying that before spending a lot on a fancy stick.
I recommend the Thrustmaster T.Flight (with or without the HOTAS X, which ever you prefer). It's cheap and it works well for 90% of people.
Can you use the Hat? I can't seem to get KSP to detect the hat buttons
I got the Logitech a few days ago and was stumped by the hat switch for a little while. I expected it to be treated as four buttons, but it's considered a two axis input. I mapped mine to L/R and U/D translation. I'm on a Macbook Pro and, aside from the curveball above, it was painless to get it working. My problem has to do with the settings.cfg file getting corrupted if you start KSP without the joystick being attached. Ive resorted to manually swapping two settings.cfg files before launching the game -- one for joystick and one for no joystick. Has this been addressed in 1.0.5?
